    Default Montana music

This might sound silly, but what kind of music do people like in Montana? I'm going to Great Falls, and the stats online say it's 89% white, 6 % native american, 2% hispanic and 1% black. Oy. I'm guessing that music that goes over well in Hongcouver might not fly in MT...

So what do you guys think? Rock? Country? Examples of ideal tunes?

Just some genre suggestions would be a nice jumping off point, then I can search the forum for ideas. Thanks!

Well, they might love it, but they might start a riot and lynch the DJ!

The first song that comes to mind is "Movin' to Montana" by Frank Zappa.

It's one of my favorite songs by this musical genius, who died way too young, thus depriving the world of his fertile imagination and brilliant wit.

If you have Kazaa or whatever, give it a listen...

My bet is, the humorless among them will hate it, the rest of them will be thrilled to death. All in all, probably too risky.

It has a smooth, slower groove to it which should be easy for a veteran dancer to pull off, but it is a unique song, not for the fussy dancers, and also it has moments of musical whimsy to match the outrageously funny lyrics.

Dental floss tycoons everywhere love this song...

I did play it for a dancer who came right off a ranch in Montana, who was one of the fussier (but worth the effort) dancers I have worked with. I of course told her what I was up to. She liked it, though I think she would have preferred her Velvet Acid Christ, lol.

Dear Scarlett, I worked in nearby North Dakota this year, and the favored music is hard rock, classic rock and country in the rural Midwest. A big hit (and easy to dance to) is the Wallflower's "Bringing Down the Horse". Trust the DJ, people tend to be kindly and communicative in the Midwest. (In fact......it is said the Midwesterners are the Americans most similar to Canadians, right, eh?)

One of my more interesting new discoveries this year has been a group called "Venus Hum". They have a really excellent song called "Montana". I have heard a few versions of it - there is one killer remix but I forget who did it.

Montana music is (in my experience):

    - Big & Rich
    - Gretchen Wilson
    - Guns & Roses (esp. non-singles)
    - 70's glam rock
    - ACDC etc
    - patriotic pro-bush songs
    - random country tunes that I don't know
