    Question for Moms Out there

I'm currently 5 1/2 months pregnant, and since last Monday i've had horrible pain in my mid to lower right side of my back. Its gotten so bad some days that i just sit there crying becuase nothing i'm doing helps . My midwife says it might be a pinched siatic nerve and it might last until i deliver , obviously this isn't what i wanted to hear. Has anyone else had this problem while pregnant if so, what can i do to help relieve the pain????

    Thanks,

    Ivy

You might want to get a urine test to see if you have a kidney infection. I know pregnancy makes you feel like you have to pee all of the time, but so can an infection. Wouldn't hurt to rule it out. Sorry you're having to deal with this.

You said your midwife says "it might be" and she does not know, because they dont do urine tests or pelvic exams. It would not hurt to see an OBGYN just to rule out anything at all. I think the midwife might be all for it. This is not normal to have pain so bad you cry while pregnant at any trimester....Only while delivering!

    Lotsa luck hun, CONGRATS!!!!

I agree with the previous posters about ruling out a kidney or bladder infection. Also, especially if you are still dancing, the extra arch in your back from your belly pulling down can cause more of that sciatic nerve pain. You can try getting on your hands and knees and curling into a ball, poking your back OUT as much as possible and then relaxing.

decided to take a trip to my Doc this afternoon, he ruled out any type of infection, and agreed that due to the location of the problem its definitly my siatic nerve, he told me to do the same things i'm already doing which is warm baths and or showers, a heating pad, and a few asprin free tylenol. He said the pain level effects all women differently. Thanks for the idea Candy, i'll try that this evening before bed. Any other remedies would be appreciated.

I had this. Got it in my last trimester. We were rear-ended on the way to the doctors office and my back got all "pushed out of line". It ended up pinching all kinds of nerves. Pure hell. I remember wanting to walk...and just doing the limp/pregnant/pain waddle. It sucked. The only thing that you can do for now is what you are doing...other than that, just take some deep breaths and know that in a few months it'll all be "back to normal".

Oh, you may want to talk with an herbalist. They may be able to give you some herbs that you can use (that are pregnancy safe) that can help with the pain that you can put in your bath water or use as a "sniffer".

when you go to sleep at night, try laying on your side and place a pillow in between your knees.

Oh yeah.. I remember this well. Yeesh! I was in the hospital on Xmas Day with my second child! Arg. I had the same type of pain, and after a battery of tests were run, they concluded that it was a kidney infection. They couldn't really give me anything to take for it (I was 5 months pregnant), so I got to stay in the hospital for 3 days.

Definitely get it checked out hunny. They need to run tests. If it is a kidney infection, it needs to be tended to. Any kind of infection is not good for you or the baby, but a kidney infection is pretty common, but serious, in pregnancy.

Good Luck to you and Let us know how it goes..

    That's inaccurate.

Certified nurse-midwives provide a full range of primary health care services to women, including gynecology checkups, family planning services, preconception care, prenatal and postpartum care, and, of course, delivering babies. They attend births in a variety of settings, primarily in hospitals, but also in birth centers and private homes.

A certified nurse-midwife is a health care provider who has been trained in both nursing and midwifery and is certified by a national organization called the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). In order to be certified, a CNM must be formally educated in midwifery at an accredited program affiliated with an institution of higher learning, demonstrate clinical competence, and pass a rigorous national certifying exam. CNMs are licensed to practice in all 50 states and the District of Colombia. (The ACNM has also started certifying midwives — CMs — who are not nurses but who have the same training and take the same exam as CNMs.) Most midwives in the U.S. are CNMs.

You can choose a certified nurse-midwife to care for you during your pregnancy as long as you're in good health (meaning you have no serious chronic medical condition, such as high blood pressure, epilepsy, heart disease, or diabetes).

I had a nurse midwife for all three of my pregnancies. She provided all of my ob/gyn care and was simply amazing.

As for the back pain, many women don't realize that the uterus is "anchored" if you will, to your back with ligaments located on each side. Once the uterus gets heavier it can pull and irritate pre-exsisting back issues and at times cause new ones. I had big-big babies (my smallest was 9lbs; i'm 5'4") and had quite a few back issues linked to this. Just a thought...

9lbs??? Ouch! Everyone has been freaking me out telling me this is going to be a big baby. I want a nice size baby, 7lbs 12oz would be nice, anything below 8lbs and i'll be very happy. I'm only 5 1/2 months along, and have a little tiny belly, nothing big, but considering i had an absolutly flat stomach before this is considered big,lol I think i've gained just shy of 15lbs so far, so the midwife is very happy. I just cant wait until march, then outside of delivery, and postpartum pain i'll be good

I switched between using a hot water/cold water pad to an electric heat pad. I tried that back support belt but it was just too uncomfortable for me.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

Ya. My oldest and youngest were both 9lbs while my middle one was 10lbs. I'm not a big gal (5'4" and between 120-130, size 5/6) and all three of my kids were HUGE. I was lucky enough to have problem free pregnancies/deliveries and had them all vaginally with no pain meds.

ps - I weighed in between 155lbs and 165lbs when I delivered each one. For me the weight gain wasn't an issue and I was back in my clothes in 4 months or so.

I'm 6' and when i started I was about 120lbs size 2. I'm leaving it open to get demerol while in labor, but i dont want an epideral unless 100% necessary. The Midwife told me the more protein you take in the greater the chances of having a larger baby. I eat the recommended amount of protein + a little extra, but i refuse to over do it, fear of large babies. I saw a lady have a baby that was just slightly over 10lbs and the first words out of her mouth after she found out the babies weight was "she's the size of a small turkey" Like i said nice 7lb+ baby and i'll be very happy

The biggest baby that I've seen was my bestfriend's. She is mexican/native american/hawaiian. The biological father mexican but a big guy like a linebacker. The baby ended up being huge 11.5 lbs. 23inches. I remember at the time the nurses joking that we would end up returning all of his babyshower clothes, which we ended up doing. My kids ended up being between 8-9lbs. and I thought that was big.

The funny thing is weight in and of itself isn't a deciding factor in whether or not the delivery will be bad/hard/etc. It's far more dependant upon the size of the babies head and the size/shape of the mother's pelvic girdle.

Ivy- I'm struggling with back pain, and I have my friend massage my back frequently...if you have a sweet caring partner for back rubs, that can help. I also noticed when I lie on the floor it hurts less (spine alignment?) Go to GNC and the health food store and ask about herbal medicine/ muscle relaxants (the infamous GHB is actually just a non-narcotic muscle relaxant).

Well I can tell you this much, this is a very active baby, even the midwife agreed. I've been feeling this baby move for weeks already. The kicking is already starting to keep me up at night. and I dont know if this is normal or not maybe its because i'm thin to begin with but the baby does this thing where it feels like he/she is going to pop out of my skin, a hard spot will suddenly form in the shape of the babies foot, or length of the baby, and i swear it really feels like my skin is just going to pop its very uncomfortable but thankfully only happens a few times a day, everyone i know with babies started overweight to begin with, so they never had the effects i'm having, but i'm guessing this is all perfectly normal

Yes, it is normal. When I got pregnant with my first child I weight around 110 and I am 5'9". I was very small in the tummy area. I could often see her foot, hand, and even butt plainly. It was kinda freaky. I could also feel her very early in the pregnancy. I think I was around 3 months or 4.

It's very normal. With my third I had a permanant knob on the side of my tummy that turned out to be her elbow. She was born with a callus on her thumb from her sucking it in utero, hence the elbow.

LOL...welcome to "pre-motherhood". haahaa I felt Makayla moving around when I was about 3 months pregnant...and she moved CONSTANTLY until she started running out of room (right before she was born). Then, when she moved to change positions, my belly would get "flat" on one side and you could see her roll/move over. Your belly just does these weird motions.

It does get kind of hard to sleep at night with baby moving so much...but, during the day when you're running your errands, working, whatever, you're moving around is "rocking" the baby to sleep. So, when you finally lay down to rest...the baby wakes up and "starts her/his day". I found that putting on Mozart Adagios really helped with the relaxation of both myself and Makayla. It still works to this day when she goes to bed.

And, Makayla was 8 lbs, 10 oz. and 20 1/2" long. I am the first of all of my friends to have a natural delivery (no epidural, no drugs)...and I did that with the Pitocin (was induced). The labor will be intense...but it's not "painful". And, the pressure of the baby's head will numb out your vaginal area, so you won't feel any pain. You'll feel a little bit of pressure...but you'll be concentrating on your breathing and pushing, that the next thing you'll know...you hear your little one cry. It's a beautiful thing. A couple books you should read are: Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way and Husband-coached Childbirth. Even if you DO decide to go the other route...it's always nice to know exactly what your body is going through. When you understand the process, you fear it much less...which makes the process much easier.

    Good luck!!!

I'm going to hold off on getting any drugs as long as possible, but because its my first i'm keeping the option of demerol open. You never know maybe i'll be able to handle it with no problem, lots of women do it. I'm most likely going to go with water birth, from what i understand it takes a large strain off of your back, and with a bad back to begin with, and a pinched siatic nerve now, it seems like the best idea at the moment. I'm going to be delivering out of Staten Island University Hospital in New York, the best hospital in the area in case any emergency procedures need to be done.

I've heard of the water birth is that where you are going to give birth while in the water?

I swear by the "pillow between the knees" while sleeping. I still do it to this day!

i'm delivering in a birthing suite, and in the suite they have a jacuzzi tub. Instead of delivering the old fashoin way strapped to a cold uncomfortable table, i'll sit in the tub, and when the baby is fully outthey move the baby from under the water to on my chest, its supposed to also be an easier transition on the baby going from water to water, then only halfway in the water.

I had a jacuzzi in my suite too. I didn't have my baby in it but it was very helpful for the back labor.
