Sad Will Spinning Make My Legs Thicker?

Just curious - I've been spinning for over a year - and my legs although tighter - have not gotten smaller. I am unfortunately bottom heavy - thick, muscular legs, tiny waist and upper body with good muscle tone; I'm 5'9" 145 lbs - eat clean, workout 6x week - spin 2x week, cardio (mainly power walking) 4x week - 2-3x week weights. What on earth can I do to reduce the size of these limbs?

I'm not sure about spinning but I have heard that if you have "bigger" legs/thighs, to stay off the stairmaster. That will pump them up even more!

Pilates and yoga. They tone and lengthen instead of bulk. The spinning classes are very intense on your leg muscles, so they're building them up which will make them look bigger. Pilates is an excellent work out and you look leaner! Hope this helps a little.

Whilst I doubt that Spinning will build / bulk up your leg muscles in a dramatic way (like doing leg presses or other resistance training exercises) it will give them a shape and look that may not be in accordance with what you would like. If the coach is having you do lots of hill climbs this will be a contributing factor. Often when the fat is stripped off the thighs and the lean and toned muscles underneath are revealed, women are not pleased with the result feeling it looks too masculine.

Doing treadmill or other cardio exercise will remedy this, but you still need to do light resistance training (weights) to keep your metabolism operating at peak (and helping keep your body lean). If your legs tend to thicken too much restrict your thigh work in comparison with exercises that you do for the rest of your body.

Try doing Yoga.....it will lengthen the muscles and make them less bulky.....I think. Ask Venus...she's the residen Yoga/Pilates expert!

Make sure you do NOT do very heavy weights on lower body. But don’t stop completely, just do it with lighter weight. (Only lower Body),upper do what you do normally. Pilates & Yoga is good too as was mentioned, or any type of exercise that is not with heavy weight. I would say, that the spinning is good for ya, because you burn lot of calories and if not, you may look even more muscular or strong because obviously you may have more Body Fat %. But careful to you do not overdo it – example: many people think just because they do a lot and to fast cardio they should loose quicker lot of weight and in stead of that, they get out of their Fat burning zone and are loosing minimum. If you go so much to the gym and don’t want to pay trainer, then ask someone else, like maybe you have there some friend that is Bodybuilder?- Same like they know of gaining muscle, they also know about trimming down. Do you have a swimming pool at your gym? You may try that. (There are great exercises). Also you say that you eat clean which is awesome, but still you may try to look a little closer to it. Example when I eat good diet, but I still allow me eat a little more dairy, so that goes immediately to my bottom. Now, I do not say that in your case is it necessarily dairy because each body is different. You just need to experiment at least you are eating calorie counted diet.
And just to let you know many times I make more money thanks to the muscles that I have, when I’m in my training season . Which is starting now. yay. I get really good trim down with good amount of muscle on purpose not exaggerated though.Ex: I have big muscle calves and I get at least 6 envy compliments from the man's a day. Not only at the gym, but in the club and everywhere else.
Guys love when a woman is a little muscular.

    Good luck.

Stretching is a good way to lengthen the muscles (think Pilates, etc). It will help prevent bulk as well as doing low resistance exercises on the lower bod. If you erally do want to go spinning, do it on a low resistance. I found that cycling on higher resistance always made my thighs and ass feel ''tight'' and a little bulkier.

I am 5'3 at 125 lbs. I also have a thicker bottom half. I believe it have a lot to do with me doing a lot of lap dancing. I use my thighs a helluvallot to support my weight. I did this intentionally when I first began dancing and they got muscular toned. Which I liked bcuz it gave me shape down there and gave me some bottom to really shake. I did try to lose my thick thighs but it is very hard for me. They are not fat they are muscle now. So I just accentuate them now and learn to love them. They after all are my money makers.

I am a certified personal trainer. Spinning is just fine. It does not make your legs bigger because it is not a weight bearing exercise. Just to let all you girls know. YOU CAN NOT SPOT REDUCE !!! That is a huge MYTH !!! Unless you do all of these 3 things you can kiss you dancer body good-by. Don't mean to sound harsh but that is the facts. No magic pills, creams etc. Just pure hard work in the gym.

Now getting back to the 3 things you MUST do to keep that perfect 10 shape.

    1. Eat right. Low carbs(not no carbs!!!) and higher protein intake. Little fat. Some fats are good.

2 Cardio Cardio Cardio. Can't stress this enough. 4-5 times a week. 30-45 min per session. No more than 45min. This will lead to fatigue and may cause injury. Remember you still have weight training to do.

3 Weight training. Actually do your weight training 1st and cardio second. Other way around and I guarentee you will not stick around in the gym to do the weights. Do not over train, meaning do the same body part more than 2 times per week. Split the body up. Here is how.

    Day 1 Chest and Biceps
    Day 2 Back and Triceps
    Day 3 Shoulders
Day 4 Legs (Quads and Hamstrings)
    Day 5 Rest Day
    Day 6 Chest and Biceps
    Day 7 Back and Triceps
and so on..... you can throw in you calfs and abs in every 2nd or 3rd day. NOT EVERYDAY LIKE I HEAR ALL THE TIME !!! ANOTHER BIG MYTH !!! Those muscles need rest to develope just like all the other ones, period !!!

If anyone needs more help setting up a program, let me know.

dlunatics, I'll second your training program (although my diet plan is a bit different).

I get EXCELLENT results training that way and it happened really fast. I never saw results that fast when I did the 'ol upper body workout one day alternating with the lower body workout the every other day. The way I do it... max time at the gym is 1 hour, 30 minutes (usually closer to an hour) which is easier to convince yourself to do and have a great, intense workout. When working on just one or two muscle groups, it is also easier to stick with the heavier weights you need to see results. Girls don't bulk up unless they really go to extraordinary lengths so there is no need to fear heavier weights.

For the record, I tend to gain on the bottom half too if I am not careful. A beautiful thing happens when you get your shoulders and back toned... it makes your figure look gorgeously proportionate.

I throw in a bit of ballet or belly dance classes, yoga, pilates or something - changes throughout the year - to keep me lithe and mix things up a bit.

As for diet, I try to not eat processed grains or sugars and I get most of my protein from vegetable sources (and a small amount of fish). I noticed that another girl I work out with (who actually showed me this process) eats more "Atkins-esque" and while both our bodies are very toned (we are the same height and build) she looks a little more like a fitness competitor while I look more like a dancer (as in ballet, but not emaciated). I'm thinking the diet plays into this... or just different bodies doing different things. Everyone is different.

As for the Spinning... if it is a class you like enough to keep going and therefore get a great cardio session... stick with it. Cardio is sooooo important and can get boring if you don't find something you like.

Right on the money!!! Do not fear the weights. You will not get BIG !!! The more lean muscle you build the more fat you will burn even at rest. As a trainer I see the most people fail on the diet part. I can be at the gym to help with cardio and weights, but if you don't eat right, why waist you time and money at the gym.

I wanted to say EXACTLY what dlunatic said!!!
Women don't have the capacity to get big and bulk up through weight bearing exercise, without some form of supplementation...aka roids.
To make yourself smaller, you must increase cardio. You said how often you work out, but you didn't say for how long you were going at each time. Everyone is different in this regard, such as how I need to do a TON of cardio to burn fat whereas some people get by on very little. If you are like me, and bottom heavy...it probably will be harder for you than most to slim those areas. On women, your hips and thighs area is usually the last place to get smaller during weight loss. Do not be afraid of spinning, or weight training in general. Cardio sessions are good, they burn calories and fat, but it's weight training that will help the most in the long run. The weight training will force your body to become more efficient in burning calories at rest (and most of the time, you are at rest...so you burn more calories when you are doing nothing, which ends up being when it counts the most). If I were you, I would INTENSIFY the cardio sessions you are doing (as in, swap power walking for jogging/power walking and build your way up to running...or doing other types of high intensity cardio) and possibly add in another weight session into your week if possible. When trying to cut fat, your cardio sessions should be at least between 30-45 minutes each. If you do less than 20 minutes at a time, you aren't going to see big results. Hope this helps, and remember...when making changes in your routine...do it gradually so it's not too much of a shock to your body.

as a spin instructor, i can vouch that spinning will not make your legs "big." lean them out/cut them up.. yes... but unless you have skinny stick legs, all it will do is improve the muscle tone/reduce body fat. do you ever see distance cyclists with huge legs? (see. lance armstrong) spinning is an incredible workout, and if you stick with it, you will be thrilled with the results, i promise

So spinning wont make your ass & thighs thicker?

I want to make my ass & thighs thicker(muscular though, not by fat). I lost lots of it & my pants are all baggy. I want my ass back, lol.

no, it definitely will not. it will, however, make your legs lean and trim while giving you a nice, round booty.

Think pro. cyclists - do you ever see one with super-thick legs? no, they are all lean and muscular. That's because the degree of cardio work involved in spinning and cycling will keep your leg muscles from bulking. Any endurance athlete, come to think of it, has lean, strong lines.

give spinning about a month (taking classes 3-4 x/week) and you will begin seeing results.

    happy spinning!

Spinning will increase leg muscle mass, Yes. but the more muscle you have, The more caliories/fat you burn durring your SLEEP. Muscle is half the size and weights twice as much as fat, And it's hella attractive.

In ONE spinning session, You can burn an average of 500 calories. After afterwards you continue to burn..

    It's a win win situation.

FYI don't worry about getting "out of the fat burning zone" or what have you. Bottom line, to lose weight (fat) you have to expend more calories than you take in. If you're working out at a higher intensity, you will burn more calories, period. Now, if you work out at such a high intensity that you can't keep going for more than 15 minutes (not you obviously, but someone) then you would be better off to work out at a lower intensity for 30 minutes. But if you can work out at the higher level for 30 minutes, do it!
