Usually about two weeks, faster if you call public records in the county you were born in. I think.

If you still lived where you were born, you could get a certified copy from your Town/City Hall. You'd have it within 5 minutes that way.

But unfortunately since you have to send away for it, like Lena said, it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.

I had to send away for a copy of mine to Connecticut a few years back. It took about 3 weeks I think.

I'm not really sure about how different states work things, but I had to send originals to get my birth certificate. That meant being without my actual license, and Social Security card for the 3 weeks, which sucked.

I was born in Illinois also, so I can tell ya where to go directly

In Illinois it is actually the Department of Public Health.

Topaz- What do you need it for? there are usually ways around it. I don't have one and have never been prevented from doing anything because of it. usually if you need to show a birth certificate for something, there are alternatives. But if you really want it, everyone did post some good suggestions.

I can't use my birth certificate so I use my passport for official needs. Unless for some crazy reason the person at DMV can read Cyrillic alphabet, not likely.....

When I got my dupe birth certificate from Illinois in order to get my passport many years ago, I think it took about 10-14 days. Maybe it's better now that we're out of the quill pen days.
