Default How many people have a career?

Hi everyone!! I'm trying to determine what I'm going to do with my life and I really have no idea what to choose. I have ideas, but can't pick just one! Anyone want to share what they feel drawn to do and how you managed to get there? Anyone else as confused about their life as I am?

actually i know exactly what i want to do...become one of the top jewelry (sp) designers (or maybe even overall designer) on the face of the planet...it's the inbetween job that will pay bills and build capital that completely befudles a sista'...

have a degree in computer science...work as a programmer...discoverd a couple of years ago that this is NOT what i want to do...wanted to do the above since high school...went for the practical...on Mom's advise...well the practical ain't doing it for me..nor is it paying all of my bills...so...it's back to the drawing board...

    ...hmmm...
Why do some people still have to fight...to get the same opportunities...that are given to others??...

Look out for self...because noone else will...AND
The greatest revenge in the world...is success...

    Reclusivness...is a good thing.

Hmmm... Topaz it seems like you have a lot in common with Adina. She makes jewelry.

Right now my career (and has been for several years) is Patient Relations at a major hospital. Lots of work, but fine job i guess. 401K, paid Pl, paid vacation, health and dental benefits, retirement, bonus twice a year, awards, pay raise yearly. Not too shabby.

I would love to actually own or co-own a phone sex business! Help out the guys who are house bound! And one day i will own a phone sex company too with or without a partner

Artemis, I don't know if there's any way to quickly figure out what it is that you want to do. Maybe start thinking about what interests you most and then go for it relentlessly. Meet someone who's already in one of the fields you're interested in, and ask them more about it, maybe mention that you're interested in getting into that, but make it clear that you have a passion for it. Ask them how they got their start, you never know, they may even offer you a job or at least some helpful tips on how to go about it, maybe put you in touch with the right people. If people see that you're motivated and passionate about something, often they will look past you not having a college degree or experience. I'm telling you this from experience. I'm a 24 year old high school dropout. I'm also a stockbroker with a major wall street firm. Determination and people skills will get you far in life, and usually successful people can see that you have that, and may be willing to give you a shot, or some good connections.

I'm like you, Topaz. I have a degree in computer science. I worked as a programmer for 4 years before realizing that I want to dance full time.

I don't consider programming my career though since I hate it and I probably won't go back.

I'm pretty confused about what I want to do with my life too. I need to decide soon though since I'm finally getting back to school this fall.

I have it narrowed down to 3 things... I'm just a very indecisive person, so it's kinda hard to pick my career path like that.

    Artemis -

The best way to discover what you want to do is to learn about a variety of things!

Take some classes at the community college - two or three a semester - and it won't take long at all to find something that really holds your interest. There are so many options out there and taking a class in a few things that sound interesting helps you narrow the playing field. Not only will you learn more about the field, you will learn what it takes to make a career for yourself in that field - as well as expose yourself to job and internship opportunities so that you even get to "test drive" a career.

Thanks so far everyone! This is helping already. I do know that I will do something active, I saw this book on Exercise physiology? I thought about trying that. Truly though, I get so overwhelmed by everything that has to be done that I end up doing not much of anything besides reading at home!!

Arte.....(and anyone else)....go to the book store and purchase a book called "What Color is Your Parachute". It's a well-reknowned book that takes you through many stages of learning about yourself in the world of careers.

I got my BS in zoology from UCLA and now I am dancing full time to pay back my student loans. I am moving to Japan in January to continue my education and I will probably continue to dance out there. Without school as a back up plan I think I would be really confused about my purpose in life too! At least you always have your degree to fall back on!

My friend does something like this (she got a little hard body on her!) She works in a cardiac rehabilitation center, so it isn't like if you study excercise science you end up helping housewives in gyms.

Kryssy, I was a stay at home mom until recently, so that was my career until now. Time to find something to support me.

I looked at that book and will buy it next week, thanks guys.

School is a great idea and I will go soon. I was going to school to be a nanny but decided to drop and get a degree that will help me make the kind of money I will need to support my daughter. I have a really hard time managing to accomplish everything. I get overwhelmed so easily and can't seem to get it all done!!
