    Default illegal tattoo..

This may seem like quite a strange request, but im actually looking for somewhere i can get an illegal tattoo.. i turned 18 in june but i dont have any id (i never took a driving test because i live in new york so theres no point). I also dont want to get a fake id, because it seems so sketchy and i have no other use for it seeing as nobody ever cards me except in these god forsaken tattoo parlors on st marks (isnt that suposed to be like the most illegal block in the city?) help please!

What exactly is an illegal tattoo? Do you mean a tattoo artist who will do the work with out an ID from you? If that's the case you really need to think about the artist doing the work. A reputable tattoo artist will and in most states has to follow rules and/or laws. My husband is a tattoo artist and all the shops he's worked at require a copy of the ID along with the consent form.

As to what type of ID is acceptable check with the shop you want to do the work. I have agree with Crystal-eyes, you should have some kind of ID even if you don't drive. Most states will issue an ID card that is accepted just like a drivers license. In Virginia they're issued by DMV, check with your state DMV.

Like they've said - just get a state ID...you'll need either a Social Security card and/or birth certificate. I would suggest you begin by calling a REPUTABLE tattoo shop and ask them what type of proof they need.

I will say, it concerns me...you're 18, don't realize you can get a state ID, and simply plan to get around the situation by going to an illegal shop where you risk contracting hepatitis. Not a bright decision.

U don't have a school Id? Go to Dmv and get a non drivers ID, u can't just walk around with no type of identification, NYPD'll take u downtown

Anyway, try a tattoo shop on W4 & 6th, I'm not gonna name names cause I don't know u, but try a few. If u at least look over 18, u won't have a problem....Dragonfly on W4th will do it no questions asked, but you'll get a shitty tatttoo so don't even bother with them.

Any tattoo shop that will do a tatto without checking and copying id isn't the kinda place I would want to get tattooed.
Chances are if they are willing to overlook that lil law then they will also skimp on safety and sterilization etc....

    Exactly.....

I would rather wait until I had an I.D. to get a safe, sterile work of art on my body......

What's the rush sista? I think that the age restriction is a good reason for you not to get the tat now. I know too many people, friends of mine who are in their twenties, who regret their tats NOW even though they got them fairly recently as teenagers.

I'm not trying to sound like a mother by saying you're too young or that it is just a fad, hey, I'm still a baby too. I know you are probably dead set on this, but take the time until you're 21 to think it over. It's not like a piercing which you can just remove if you don't like it. By then you might even have changed your mind on the design, position on your body etc. that you want. Just use the time to think it through a bit more.

All in all, good luck with it.

Ther fact that you'd take a risk and get an illegal tattoo is presisly why you probably should wait until your old enough to get it done legally! If your not mature enough to be concerned about risks associated with getting tattooed illegally then your possibly also the sort of person who will regret getting tattooed in a few years time.
Here 18 is legal anyway, but it really doesn't hurt to wait a while - time does go pretty quick you know, trust me - it feels like I was only 18 a few years ago!!! (-:

Oh, I must have misread the Q. My bad.

However, like aussiepunk said, waiting will not kill you, there is no rush to get it done and also check the credentials of tat specialists while you are waiting so you feel safe about it and know you'd be satisfied with a job well done. If you are in a hurry to get one, my guess would be that it's an impulse thing (I'm not saying it is, this is just a guess. Again, I'm talking from the experience of some of my friends). If you are so sure that it's what you want, you know that you'll get it regardless, whether it's now or in a few months time when your ID may come through.

Good luck with the tat and the ID. I hope it goes well. x

if you really don't want to get an ID, you can always use your birth certificate and something with your name and a picture of yourself on it, i use this method to get my piercings done and to buy cigarettes, although i live in Pennsylvania, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do this in New York?

oh...and one more thing....make sure whoever you're going to checks for age verification, because i've seen friends go to artists who don't check that and come back VERY unhappy, check you're artist out first and ask to see a photo album of previous work they've done customers!! this way you know what you're getting yourself into

when i was 19, my dad took me to get a tattoo, the age here is 21, but 18 with parents permission... when i went to get my second one for my 20th birthday, i wasnt carded because they already knew my dad... my tattoos were done the by the same person, both times, who is a friend of my dads, owns aVERY clean shop, and discounted my price, only because he was my dads friend, and had done 4 or 5 of my dads tattoos... i would have to agree with everyone, i dont know what the legal age is in new york, but if its 18, then go get a state ID, it will take you maybe an hour TOPS, depending on how busy it is... if you're not, and a parent isnt going to go with you, then just wait, or make someone drive you to a state where the age is 18, lol

Why would you want to get an illegal tattoo anyways? You seem in such a hurry to get a tat, I doubt you're going to check into the background of this tattoo place. All sorts of diseases can be passed through those places that are unsafe.

    But, if you must......

You can get a regular ID.

But why does your profile say 21?

    Oh well.

To play devil's advocate, it is pretty difficult to get ID in NY if you don't have other forms of id. There's this point system and you have to show enough id to get a certain amount of points to be able to get the state id. Whatever.
Anyway, my tattoo guy does tattoos out of his home. PM me. He's very weird about tattooing people he doesn't know at his house (understandably). So we'd need to talk.

Please be very careful about anyone tatooing out of their home. Not to say that your guy doesn't do quality work but you do run the risk for contracting hepatitis. There are 176 documented strains of hep C. With out the proper sterilization you run a greater risk for contracting the disease.

Susan, I understand the risks of someone tattooing out of their home. But in this particular case the guy is trustworthy. He has been an artist for longer than I've been alive, has trained not only with a traditional gun, but also japanese style needle tattooing, and have tattooed tommy lee and other celebrities. Everything he uses is completely steralized or new if it's a removable part.
