    Default pet insurance?

Any one ever tried this? Comments? What company have you used if you have gotten it for your furry friends?

Yes, I have pet insurance for my cat through a company called Shelter Care.

Here is the number: 1-866-375-PETS (7387)

    or http://www.sheltercare.com

I never knew about the insurance until I adopted my cat from the shelter.

With me, I got the first two months free just for adopting and after that you add the kind of coverage you want. It's pretty cool.

    I don't think it's really worth it.

You're better off putting the money you'll spend in premiums in an account for your cat.

Depending on the plan, it usually doesn't cover vaccines and checkups, plus getting them to pay for anything is a pain in the ass. Do a search on epinions.com or something for the plan you are looking at and see how people felt about it. I have 12 animals, and I realized that I don't anywhere near as much in vet bills as I would on premiums, so I don't have it.

I think it could be good for someone that can't save or couldn't afford a major medical procedure

I got something through my vet's (not sure if all vet's have it) that was called a Pet Care Plan for older cats. It was $22 a month, free vaccines, free once a year bloodwork that would have been really expensive w/out it, and I think 1/3 off operations, free office visits. It was worth it for an old cat because they can start having all kinds of medical problems- my 2 older cat's one had kidney failure another had one had hyperthyroid and it saved money. For young cats (under 7 or 8 that pet plan wouldn't have been worth it because young cats are usually healthy and just need shots (and spaying). I'm not sure if all vet's have it though- the vet I went to suggested it when they saw my cats starting to have medical problems.

be careful because there may be a financial incentive for a vet recommending a company.

A lot of these insurance policies won't cover a pre-existing condition, which is why a lot of people weren't getting their claims paid. And even if they were, sometimes not for the whole amount.

I guess I said it wrong the plan I got wasn't from an insurance company but just from the vet. It wasn't really insurance but was more like they gave a break on some prices if you were paying monthly and things got espensive for a cat w medical problems.
