Are exotic dancing lessons a good investment ?

I really, REALLY wanna dance but I don't wanna do it here in DC. I was thinking of taking an exotic dance class (pole dancing, floorwork, lapdances) in NYC, and then trying my luck. Another thought was Atlanta. I'm also 33 (i can pass for 25) and of color(I'm a black chick), so I won't be checking out the upscale clubs .
Also, I believe I heard someone say the $$$ in good right now. Any clue as to why?

This depends on how good you are at body mechanics. Some people naturally know how to move and others, well, don't.

How do you know? Can you easily keep up with a step aerobics class? When learning a new yoga move you usually get it the first time? Then I would skip the stripper training and maybe just buy Fawina's tapes, or the striptease aerobics by Carmen Electra. Don't worry about the pole work. Sure it is impressive, but it doesn't sell lap dances.

About money being good right now, that is a regional thing. Some places are jumping, but the mid-west is pretty slow due to harvest time keeping people working overtime at most of the companies. As soon as all the fields are bare, and product gets to market in the midwest, then they really start to pick up. Places that rely on summer tourism are getting pretty slow right now, but I have heard warmer climates (like Vegas) is starting to pick back up again, because their summer is slow.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

    Hi there,
Well I agree with Paris, if you don't have the moves or the self esteem right now try the Carme Electra tapes...my husband bought them for me as a joke and I LOVE THEM! Try dancing infront of the mirror with high heels and practice your moves. It's all going to come from practice, practice, practice. You said you're a woman of color I would advise you to definitely stay away from the "ghetto" clubs, the money is just not good there, at least not here in San Diego. Eventhough you want to stay away from and upscale place I would encourage you to still give it a try. Good luck!

I used Fawnia tapes and they helped but not as much I thought they would. Pole Work is good. The others taught me stuff I already knew but did give me more confidence.

Bellydance by Neena & Veena really, really, really loosens me up and makes me feels sexy. (And I have tried many sucky bellydance videos.) Look on ebay.com and amazon.com for this if you are interested.

Carmen Electra's stuff is kinda expensive. Borrow it from the library if you are curious. Yes, the library probably does have it.

That you are black and over 21 does not automatically disqualify you to work in an upscale club. At 33, you have a different attitude than the younger people. You might find that men *like* this. And that they like a grown-up black woman.

If you want to take a class to help you with this job, take a sales class. Being a better dancer might make you an extra $20, but being a better sales person will make you the big bucks ($500 and up).

I really recommend Dancer Wealth. He would tell you right away that being 33 and black isn't NOT considered a bad thing. Don't sell yourself short before you get started!

    Tapma-

    I took it last week.

There is a lot to be learned and actually having it come out of my mouth right is more complicated than I thought, so I've only been able to incorporate some of the things I've learned so far, but so far, so good.

I think it probably paid for itself this week alone.

Not to derail the thread but what do you think the stripping industry is like in D.C? I currently live in Atlanta and because I'm practically a native now I've decided that if I do take up stripping it will be in a new city and I've always wanted to live in DC. Plus it seems like a very professional atmosphere with a lot of swankier places to dance at.. plus in Atlanta its legal to go panty-less and I rather work in a city where I have to keep them on.

But to answer your own question-- I know clubs like Magic City give the women training classes to learn the tricks of the trade (they have a great behind-the-scenes video on the club and its dancers on Youtube called "The Power of the Pussy" or something like that) I'm not sure if the girls pay for the classes out of pocket and I don't know if its required but its a nice gesture. Of course, their a well established club so they take their image seriously.

It depends on the club, it really does. If it's a heavily stage oriented club like Stadium is then I'd say yeah. And for n00bs I'd say go for it.

No. Keep you're money. Go work in a whack as club and learn from those girls. That would be taking baby steps. That way you can earn while you learn. I'm not a fan of pole dancing classes because you learn quicker if you do it more often. With pole dancing class you go once twice a week. You are there for about an hour and you touch the pole maybe 3 to five time depending on class size. I went to a pole class to learn how to do one trick. The girls in the class said that they had been coming for months and could barely climb the damn thing.

There are TOO many video on youtube for free. Just saying.

I have been to DC. Didn't care for it. I would say dance in Baltimore. It's only 45 minutes away. However, if you are wanting to dance in a mixed club Baltimore is not it. They got like a "seperate but equal" "Jim Crow" sort of bullshit going on. I went to two different clubs and they told me, "Black girls dance up stairs, White and light skinned girls dance downstairs." I was like Eff that, I just worked in a black club, and I banked. I would rather dance in a Mixed club though. I like those the best.

I know the post is old, but I love going to a pole studio to learn new things. I like Fawnia but really love FELIX CANE. I also do lessons on PoleAndAerial.com ... they have hundreds of videos I can get on my phone anytime plus floorwork. You can buy by the year or monthly.
