    Default Frank Herbert's Dune

Because of all the Dune fans on the board, I decided to start a Dune thread.

Why do you like Dune so much and what other books do you enjoy?

When did you first read Dune?

And should we start a Dune cult?

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

No, Maxine. You don't see Dune. You read Dune, then you see Dune, then you complain about having seen Dune and how much it falls short of the book and pontificate on how stupid things like the "weirding module" were. Movie did have some cool footage and I thought they chose some of the characters pretty well. I thought Sting was a good choice to play Feyd Ruatha.

Although I haven't seen more than a few minutes of the newer Sci-fi made for TV mini series version, which is advertised as being closer to the book, I thought, in the few minutes that I saw, that the acting looked pretty bad and that selection of the actors was pretty poor. William Hurt as Leto Atreides. Bah! Just as bad as casting him as John Robinson in "Lost in Space".

Currently reading - Dune: The Machine Crusade

    Thanks, Chani.

And, sign me up for the cult!

Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

Oh my gosh, I read Dune maybe 20 years ago. I had no idea what I was getting myself into - an Awesome book.

The thing that struck me most about Dune was the different factions and how they managed to achieve influence on each other's actions and limit the other's lust for power. What was even more interesting is that it wasn't just two factions - one made out to be "good" and the other to be "bad." There had to be at least five major factions and many minor ones. It certainly is more interesting that way.

I think it is a good book on politics. One allies as much as one can with another for a common cause, but we all know the allies are looking for their own interests too. When the oppurtunity strikes - they grip onto it and go with it. And such is the way of politics.

I think he explains why this is important - many fear the mental unstableness of the Baron who can certainly be said as a model for REAL leaders and dictators out there. We would like to think such a character is made up, until we see in real life child armies in africa eating the hearts of their fallen victims. Then the Baron looks remarkably sane...

And of course there are people who follow their hearts, such as the Duke and his concubine - both of whom face repercussions from the various factions.

Another Frank Herbert book I enjoyed (other than the Dune line) is The Dosadi Experiment. () One actually roots for, what are perceived as the cunning and ruthless, but you can do that because you know they were fucked from the beginning. Their brutality is ... excused? or at least understandable.

Then there are the usual classics.

I had read The Chronicles of Thomas Convenant - my first foray into the Fantasy genre (). It was quite interesting indeed! (As an aside, we lived so far from the library, that they actually sent out book lists one could order, and then if you paid the postage, they would mail the book out to you. This was the first books that I had received in this manner. It was a god sent and I really should send some money to that library to keep up the good work.)

I have to agree with this. I've read Dune several times (yes - all of the series). Not one of the movies does it justice (aside from the fact that not one of the movies is as comprehensive as the books).

I'm a Dune cheerleader! I've turned a couple of people on to the books.

    Right Chani?

Went into the local SC to proselytize for the Dune Cult today.

OK, that wasn't the goal, but I think I talked one of the dancers into reading the books.

That'll teach her to hang out with me while she's working up the enthusiasm to get to work.

    Our numbers will grow!

Dune was the second book i ever read (right behind Lord of the Rings, yeah yeah yeah, people will insist that LOTR was three books, but the author intended it to be one book, so i view it as one book).

I think i understood about every third word when i read it the first time (I was about 9). When i read it again a few years later i was like NO WAY. By that time i knew what islam was all about and Buddism, so the word "Zensunni" made new sense to me. The "third Mohammad" new sense...

The movie, while having great visuals, failed. Not unsuprisingly. No way to crush a book of that magnitude into that dinky timeframe. David Lynch has stated publically that he was dissappointed with the final result. I did love the costumes. That fit.

I loved the miniseries. I liked Children of Dune a lot more.

    Really cool Dune website:

For those days when you really need some Fremen or Bene Gesserit wisdom.

The Lansraad (An MSN group) rocks too. They had some of the stars of 'Children of Dune' posting there for a while.
