Default The best--and safest--music download program?

I am sick of not being able to download new music.

Any recommendations as to the best free music download/filesharing program?

We have used Kazaa Lite, but took it off the computer when they started prosecuting people.

Are there better filesharing programs out there? Which, if any, are safe for downloading without fear of prosecution?

What is the situation concerning prosecution of filesharing, in general?

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to read this.

I like bear share. Run Peer Guardian when using it. It's great!

YOu could always download your music on someone else's computer

I thought if you were only downloading music and not actually putting it up, you probably won't get prosecuted? Anyone know the stats on a person's risk for getting prosecuted?

Shareaza. It accesses 3 different file sharing networks!

still gotta give it to soulseek... for music.. no multi-source downloads but if you have a good connection it doesnt matter.. almost everyone else on it has one too. for "normal" music (i use it cuz i make and crave super-underground fucked up electronic shit) i can usually search for and find something, and have it downloaded in 10 minutes.

Hmmm - a timely topic Djoser!

I was using WinMX a lot but lots of nasty viruses were coming through. Computer experts were strongly advising me to discontinue using it for this reason. A lot of the files were crappy and corrupted too. That said, they had the best selection of songs for my rather unorthodox tastes.

I began using Limewire and found that whilst the security factor was 100% safe, the range of available songs was kinda low. Recently, I encountered a spate of corrupted files trying to download Robbie Williams new song (it was for an exercise class OK?)

I have just been given an Ipod for my birthday and am thinking of just doing the buying thing from now on - have had heaps of problems with my PC adjusting to the Mac created 'pod and will probably just go the itunes way I think.

I thought the latest supreme court ruling was that the internet companies do NOT have to provide names/addresses to the music people of those who are downloading music. In other words, it doesn't matter anymore?

Thanks so much for all of your input and suggestions!

We picked LimeWire (for now) and are in a frenzy of downloading some great shit...

Already got a bunch of new songs to post about. Maybe this will keep me out of that damned Political Poo, haha. We will probably try some of the other suggestions as well.

Exclamation Re: The best--and safest--music download program?

Ok, for everyone's info I'll give ya the lowdown on the downloading of music....

The program really isn't the key here. Every one of those file sharing programs have their ups and downs. Some have spyware, some suck on searches, some allow lame ass people to list crap. Others just plain don't work.

The big thing to look at is the bitrate and file sizes. A 128 bit song is about 1 meg per min in length. (ie. a 3:30 min song is about 3.5 meg) The higher the bitrate, the larger the file. If you know a song is 4 min., but the file is way too big, I'd avoid it unless you are familiar with the people you are pulling from.

One place that is great to pull new music, but I didn't see mentioned is the news groups. Some of the groups are fantastic for pulling advance release albums.

I see so much confusion, constipation and frustration over the gathering of music on here I'm tempted to build a website just on the proper way to gather and process your music. Any co-webmasters out there?

Any other questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I'll gladly answer any questions you have.

I thought the higher the bitrate, the better the quality? But what you are saying is that there are viruses attached to bigger files? I always go for the 192 bit files, or even higher.

Exactly, Sapph.. I think that the RIAA has kind of laid-off with the downloading prosecutions anyway, and you are right about ISPs not being able to share their customers' information. Verizon, for instance was hit with a lawsuit by them a while back for refusing to disclose such information. Makes me VERY glad I have Verizon DSL.

Last I heard though, the MPAA is going to start going after people for downloading movies that are pre-releases, and movies that are currently in theaters. They've already busted a bunch of people who record the movies in the theaters on the cameras. They get completely whacked with fines, and even jail time.

I think for now, the music downloads are safe, but Peer Guardian is always a good suggestion. It'll protect you from known IP addies of "spies". They send out spies to download off of you, and that's how you get busted.

Also, with Viruses, I have Nortons '04, and whenever I'm in the process of downloading something and it comes across a virus, a notice pops up letting me know that the virus was killed and file was cleaned. I'm not sure if other Antivirus programs do that, that's why I love Nortons.

Anyhoo... I use the combination of Limewire and WinMX. If one doesn't have what I'm looking for, the other one will.

Yes, the bigger the file the better the bitrate. BUT, there ARE virii that can be attached to both pics and music files. Granted, it's extremely rare but don't take chances.

I myself use nothing lower than 192 bitrate. If I'm mixing I need the higher bits for clarity. As far as that goes, I use the Sonic Foundry suite.

Peer Guardian is great to use. I had brought that program up a good while back (I've been on a vacation for a while).

Ok, next question to this thread? lol

Neither have spyware, but Limewire has only commercial or popular stuff and Soulseek is where I find underground electronic dance music or hard to find remixes.

If you are dead set on finding the rare/off-the-wall/underground, etc. shit go to the newsgroups. Everyone that has an internet connection has access to them. Find yourself a copy of Newsbot or similar and just pick through your different groups. the people that post in there are hard-core audiophiles.

Electronic dance and hard to find remixes are what I live for, lol--but when I searched for Soulseek, the links didn't work. Do you know what's up with that?
