Tiger - no matter what you cook, when you're done, it's either edible...or it isn't. The world does not end. Buy a box of lasagna noodles...look on the back. Buy the rest of the stuff for the recipe. Make it. If you like, follow it precisely. If you think it would taste good with some extra...then add it. Play. That's how you learn.

Yes, just practice. And the easiest way to learn is by following directions...

In my case, my step father was a chef for years so I picked up a few things from him.

    Emeril kicks ass too! LOL
I love the food network channel.....

A really great book that I own is, "The Good Housekeeping Step-by-Step Cookbook from Hearse..Check it out..

Most local colleges have some kind of cooking class. Not only will you learn how to cook, but you'll meet some other "kitchen handicaps" as well...you can experiment with each other.

As always, Vaden has the answer.

As the girl at the supermarket said to me once (quoting her grandmother, I believe): "If you can read, you can cook."

Follow the directions exactly the first time you make something. If after you've tried it, you think it needs to be different, vary ingredients just a little in subsequent efforts.

With this website, you don't even need to buy a book:

Ever since the chef I was fucking told me "you can cook, just not in the kitchen" in front of a roomful of dinner guests, I have had a phobia about cooking and only make simple things. Luckily my BF is a simple foods guy and is just happy to be fed...

I wanna take a class when I get a bigger kitchen! Lots of classes around here. Also the cooking school and some restaurants have one time classes on occasion......

If a complete fucking asshole moron says something to you that is fucking moronic...why would you listen to him? Explore...try things. That's what your boyfriend is for. Experimentation. I cook stuff all the time and say "If it sucks, we'll order pizza!"

The only failure is giving up.

Well, then ignore what he said about the cooking. Any decent chef would have been encouraging.

Just simply "The joy of cooking" cookbook. It's a recipe book, but it has sections that tell you about different kinds of foods and how to deal with them.

For the best luck on the first lasagna, use the "no boil" noodles!! Saves time, energy and messiness!

I agree with the "Joy of Cooking" suggestion, EVERYTHING you need to know is in there.
I also propose www.foodtv.com. Lots of different chefs and easily searchable. Try Rachael Ray's 30 minute meals for some creative and easy ideas. (As much as she annoys me!!)
Feel free to PM me if you need any help with anything at all. I LOVE to cook!

Well, cooking from a recipe is no problem. Cooking simple American food is no problem. Its important to get good quality ingredients, prepare them all adequately, cook them just enough, but not too much. Your oven/stove does't always want to follow recipe guidelines.

You want the right kitchen utensils that will cut your food for the best flavor and presentation,etc.....

There is so much more to it. Lasagna is actually very easy to make....I am talking about cooking almost-gourmet level, it a bit tougher.

A good idea is to calibrate your oven. Buy an oven thermometer and stick it in there. That way even if the oven says 350* you'll know what you are really at. Some home ovens can be up to 100* off the actual temperature.
