    Angry acrylic nails and lifting=fungus?

Hi girls! I have had my acrylic nails for about 2 years. A few fingers felt weird and I tore the fake nails off last night. The edges are white, and the nail is so thin. The nail technician said it was called "lifting" and sold me Fung-Off. After some research I have come to the conclusion that this is a nail fungus, and am going to order Lamisil off HealthWorldPharmacy.com

I haven't seen too many posts about nail fungus, and I did a search. Do most of you ladies get fake nails put on? How long do you guys keep them on for? What should I do now that the nails are off? My nails look like crap now. Between this and the burns from my car accident, I just want to wear gloves all the time. At the nail salon, the technician said that my nails were fine. Anything to make a sale. Anyway, I really love the look of artificial nails, and am disappointed now that this has happened. Anyone else have these problems?

I'm not too sure if I'm correct, but it may have something to do with how often you get your nails replaced. I go once every 1.5 to 2 weeks, and when the nail artist tells me to take them off and replace them I go on ahead and let them do it even though it hurts like hell. I think this may eliminate your problem.

It should never hurt to have your acrylic nails removed, any nail tech who starts trying to pry your nails off should get poked in the eye. Sometimes lifting has to do with the acrylic powder/liquid ratio. You should go to a nail salon that autoclaves everything they use on you.

that's pretty interesting... when i get my nails removed it hurts because they peel all of the acrylic off of the entire nail and it's bonded on there pretty tough from several weeks, sometimes months before... what do they do to yours before they clip it off? soak it?

Yeah they are supposed to soak it. If they peel them off its because they want to do it faster, even though it hurts. I dont like that at all.

The lifting is those little air bubbles you see on the side. When you get those, and get water/air in them, you can develop fungus. I had one once, but they are not a big deal. They dont even hurt.

In any case, they always tell you that your nails are fine...but acrylics arent god for your nail, and if they file too much it causes your nails to be super thin. Mine are, but if I dont have acrylics, I wont have nails since I bite.

    Good luck

I like the look of acrylics, but they make my real nails look like shit. I've had them off since March...and my nails are long, healthy and strong.

If they are ripping your fakes off...they are ruining your real nails even more. They need to take the time to soak and file them. It takes longer, but it's better. Also, the chances of getting a nail fungus increase with each "fill-in". You should really get all new nails after every 2nd fill-in. After that...the difference in the layers, etc can be a breeding ground for nail fungus. Not horrible, but not fun, either.

You may want to just do manicures for a few months...let your nail breathe a bit and give them a chance to repair themselves. Having fake nails on all of the time pretty much kill off the real nail as it DOES need to breathe and all...

Good luck...let us know how it goes.

I worked in a nail salon and saw some nasty looking funguses. Although they are generally harmless, there are slight risks for the fungus to be absorbed in the body and cause serious problems.

I have not had acrylic nails in years. I did use glue-ons a few times this year for work, but they make 0 difference in how much money I make and are just a pain in the ass..

Take them off, get Herome nail strenghthener, use it for a month while fresh new nails grow in.

Once you have fresh new nails, use Sally Hanson maximum growth, a hardener, and get regular manicures.

I also like the Knox Nails powder vitamin packets. The Walmart Hair pills can also help your nails get longer and stronger. I use a similar vitamin...

Like hair, the quality of your natural nails is mostly genetics, so YMMV...

Acrylics look nice, but they are simply too much money to spend on destroying your hands...

I have had nail fungus from working agribusiness jobs, getting my hands grubby..... The best solution is old-fashioned: trim the fungus parts, paint them with tea tree oil frequently, and buy a good hard natural bristle nail brush that dries out between uses.....scrub your nails a few times a day. Nurses have to do this when working with patients because even natural nails are breeding grounds for germs.
Jello, beer, silica and protein are easy things to eat/take to promote healthy nail growth...you can have perfect looking nails in no time....

    madmaxine-
Does the nail fungus spread to the whole nail? What should I do in the meantime? Can I polish my nails? I am working a regular job now, but I have a promotion on Tuesday, and have to make sure my nails are presentable. How long should I wait before I can put acrylics on again?

I don't think you're supposed to put acrylic back on until the fungus is gone.

I'm curious about silk wraps though. ANybody ever have silk wraps?

I've used the Sally Hanson at home silk wraps back in the day, and they definately harden nails, but they take lots of maintenance. I am sure they do it better at the salon. There is still a good risk for fungus......

QUESTION!!! lol this tread kinda made me worry, i got my nails done professionally for the first time 10 days ago for my birthday, they aren't acrylic, i think the lady said they were fiberglass or something like that, im not quite sure....does anyone know how long i will be able to safely keep them on for(without getting a fungus or having my nails become brittle and thin??) I've had acrylic nails put on before by a friend to practice her cosmotology, and i've never had a problem with them, anyone think i'll have a problem with these at all?

YES...If I am not mistaken, the fungus needs to GROW out. You are not supposed to put any nails on over any area of the nail that had a fungus on it. I may be wrong, but I thought I read this somewhere...

Well, I was told several different things by several different people (isn't that a surprise? LOL). First, I was told that you should not wear fakes (of any kind) for more than four consecutive weeks without letting your nails "air" for at least a week or two between applications. Then, I was told that as long as you had the nails completely removed and replaced once a month, it would be ok.

I have found, though, that for myself...the fakes ruin my nails for months at a time no matter how long I have them on. For me, it's just not worth it. My nails are normal after going through hell with my last set of fakes (back in March, I believe). I think that the worst thing is when they remove the nail and PRY the old nail off...ripping up your own natural nail. This is an absolute NO-NO. If they start doing that...you NEED to stop them and tell them that their removal process is not acceptable and they are going to need to file the nail off. Some might try to charge you more...however, you need to put your foot down (and don't pay more).

I have had acrylic nails off and on for several years and my nails are pretty badly damaged from it. The thing that bothers me most is how extremely thin & sensitive my nails are after removing them. I went to Sally's and bought a UV light-less gel kit. It costs $15 and comes with nail tips, gel overlay, and a spray activator that you use to dry the nails instead of using a UV light. I throw out the nail tips and just brush it over my natural nails. It shields them from bumping up against things and makes my nail polish last longer because it smoothes over the ridges.
