Jeez! A snake? hmm, not to criticize, but snakes don't really DO anything. O, please not the 9m. I've heard that snakes only shit once a mo., & when they do, damn! But, obviously I don't know much about this type of pet. I have a dwarf bunny, she's paper trained. After her initial vet checkup & spay, she only needs 1 vet appt a yr. If you get one from adoption service, they are trained/neutered, (you pay a fee). I think (for me) it's best to check out about what you're gettin' into (read up, go talk to pet owner, vet, etc) before actually getting the animal. Take care, good luck, animals are great.

I have never had a large snake, but my family did used to have a little one. I found it to be quite enjoyable. And knowing your (justified) frustration with men, you could always pick up male mice (or whatever depending on size) to feed the little snakey-poo.![]()

I want a snake too! I think it would be an interesting pet to have, and I believe that although not mammalian affectionate, you can get satisfaction from the pet knowing you raised and cared for it.
After all, I know my kitty wuvs me for being me, not just because I feed and house her, sure. Remember, a pet persona is what we project it to be often....

i used to have a ferret, it was damn cool, but i think most parts of the world they are becoming illegal to keep as pets cos they are a pest.
i say screw the snake ( yuck!) get a monkey! haha
what do most snakes eat anyways? do they ALL eat mice etc, or are some herboviors? man i cant spell!

I did have an albino boa, great pets, just don't ever turn your back on one when you have the cage open to feed it.
Lol i have hd and danced with a Burmese Python, now (and about time) he is gone to donation, he was about 14 feet long in the end of his life with me. Took 3 people to be around him, because he was no longer "safe." I bought him years ago for stage shows, however most dancers did not like snakes, so i kept him. His name, :Julius Squeezer!
Anyway, if you want a python that wont get large, and every pet store has one, pick a "ball python" they get that name because some can be shy and ball up when you first pick them up, this goes away with handling. Max out around 5 feet, docile and at times hard to get to eat, ALWAYS ask the clerk to show you the snake eat first, force feeding is BS, i have done it. (always an exception to every snakes growth however.)
Second a boa. These too are constrictors (red tails are beautiful) and don't get too large, biggest i know of is 13 feet and aged.
Also, snakes grow according to how much you feed them. I was not very smart and "power fed" my python, he grew fast, forever shedding his skin.
Snakes can go for (healthy wise) 3 weeks or a tad longer without a meal. This may make for a hungry snake that bites, or not. You will have to see.
THey need to be kept warm, hot rocks they sell suck, snakes have burned their bellies on these damn things. Just a nice warm home will work, not cold ever, as they are not reptiles and are dependent on the air around them for warmth. They love sun, but need a place to get shade as well. They love big water bowls, and will often wrap inside one if it's big enough.
Gosh so much to say about snakes. But, if you are looking for a protection animal, snakes don't cut it, because if you are holding it,others know it wont bite them either. And in a cage, no one is scared of them.
Either way, want a mean ass snake...get a Reticulated Python, i had one once, oh gosh she was mean, bit everything, but the owner did not want her she was too huge, Retics have a rep. for being mean, but don't use these animals as a weapon it could land you in jail! (i don't think you would do that, but some have, and it's not pretty.) I was into snakes for more than half my life! My first was from my mother around the age of 11, a docile black snake.
They are a novelty pet. Nothing more, people get curious and want to see them. Beautiful and mysterious at the same time. They do love to hang around our body, only for warmth. as far as feeding, you can get dead foor already.

Kat and her kitty would probably have fun torturing my Betta fish. I won them at Seaside Heights this summer and they're still alive and well. Pretty colors. Low maintenance too. Feed em one a day and change the water when it gets dirty.
My cousin had a Boa Constrictor. His name was Clyde. He was only about 3 feet long (I'm not sure how big he ever got, though). He would sleep in my cousin's closet and when my cousin would start playing his keyboards, the snake would come out of the closet, slither up the bench, and hang around my cousin's neck. Almost as if he was just absolutely transfixed with the vibrations of the music.
Definitely do your research regarding snakes. Snakes also need to be in BIG cages...not those dinky little fish tanks...
Anywho...good luck!
My ex had a snake and I hated having to feed it little live mice. Awful. A better pet is a dog.....or cat. (I used to be cynical about why pets showed "love," but I would say it's as legitimate a love or more so than most human attachments!) My dog is the best, better than all I've ever had. So get a cute little dog.

I had considered getting a snake earlier in the year and then decided it best to get a puppy instead. You can check this thread for alot of info and websites on snakes.

www.petfinder.com is a good place to check if you're looking to adopt a snake. They are a lot less expensive than the pet store.

I could never have a pet snake, it probably weighs more than me....LOL. They're so heavy.
I've lived with several snakes thru the years...in fact you can see the latest ones cage in my avatar....imo they are low maintenance, and make decent pets.
don't want a cute little furry dog or cat...can't stand dogs...i want a snake...probably a boa...well...i say that now...i'll hafta research them first...
anyway...thanks for the inupt everybody...and thanks for the links Farrah...

no...i don't plan on using the snake as a weapon...or even protection...don't know why i mentioned the pit or the 9mm...i guess the reason would be that a lot of people out here are scared shitless of snakes...won't even look at them...while i'm fasinated (sp) by them...i figured that people won't bother me too much if they knew i owned a reptile or two...i dig iguanas too...read that they're high maintainance though...
anyway...back to my research...

I've had lots of different snakes over the years (wanted to be a herpetologist for a while). They can make good pets if you aren't looking for a pet that does tricks or displays affection. Just make sure you do your research so you know what you're in for - there are lots of people out there who get cute little baby Burmese pythons who have no idea what to do with them when they're 15 feet long and not so cute anymore.
Some species get too big, some have peculiar diets that are hard to accomodate, some are just generally hard to keep healthy and happy (very specific substrate, temperature, and humidity requirements). In short, there are lots of suitable snakes for a first-time snake owner, but there are also plenty of bad choices (bad choices that your local pet store will try to sell you, I might add). You have to do your research.
Ball pythons are often recommended as a first snake - they're sweet, small, and easy to take care of, but rather boring and unattractive IMO (they also can be problem feeders).
Corn or rat snakes are probably the best beginner's snakes - they are easy to care for and can become very tame.
If you want a boa or python, I would recommend a jungle carpet python - they're pretty, typically have a decent temperament if handled from the time they're young, and usually only grow to about 5-6 feet long, and are rather hardy. But they can be rather nippy when young (as are many snakes), and that can put off some people. And if you get nipped and stop handling the snake, they'll just get worse as they get older.
But jungle carpets aren't cheap - as of a few years ago, hatchlings were running at around $300, though that might have changed. But one of the benefits of buying a jungle carpet (or other less common species) instead of a ball python or red-tailed boa is that if you decide you don't like it or are just tired of it, you can sell it or at least find a good home for it fairly easily. There is now a wild community of Burmese pythons in Florida because people keep dumping them when they get too big - zoos won't take them and not too many other people want a giant snake.
Whatever you decide, just make sure you get a captive bred snake - never wild caught. A snake that came from the wild will be harder to tame and more likely to have parasites. The less health problems you have with a snake, the better - it's hard to find a vet that is willing even to try to treat exotics, much less one that's really knowledgeable.
Good luck!

I just checked prices, and Jungle Carpet pythons are going for about $150 now - a big drop.
Another snake to consider is a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. They're absolutely beautiful, small, and very sweet, in my experience. They also seem to be going for about $150.
thanks for the information Miss George...
i won't be getting a snake anytime soon...but i will start reading/studying up on them...and i already know i don't want a big snake....one that gets around 5 to 6 feet is fine...
