Can anyone give me the gorey details... how they work, how effective they are etc. I am a diaphram virgin and am wondering if they are worth it...

Nobody?...

Sorry I've no experience with a diaphram. I have used the Today sponge though.
An ex of mine used one for a while and she preferred it to other methods. She was a little nervous at first that it was in position, and didn't like leaving it in for the required length of time, but otherwise had no complaints. Personally I wasn't crazy about the "company" sharing space with me, especially rubbing against the rim of it, but I kept my mouth shut and never complained.
Then one day she comes home and finds her cat playing with it on the floor, literally whacking it around the room like a cat toy. Thus ended my experience with the diaphragm.
I used one years ago (back before I was divorced) but I personally wasn't crazy about it.
Picture a frisbee with a spring loaded rim. Now picture it coated in slippery contraceptive jelly. Now imagine trying to fold it in half and get it inside yourself.
Oy.
I can't tell you how many times the thing just flipped out of my hand and flew across the room.![]()

Thank for the exciting stories lol! Ok I think thats enough to out me off
And?? Any good?Originally Posted by LoveSexMoney

ok honestly after all my raving about the today sponge I've decided that I really don't care for it. It's a good idea and I do like the fact that you don't need to reinsert any spermicide so it allows for uninterrupted lovemaking HOWEVER the sponge needs to remain in place for so many hours after the last deed (I'm guessing 6 I don't remember exactly)
What that means is after multiple sex acts and you go to finally pull the sponge out...ew! fucking gross! Where has all that spooge gone? yup! soaked up by the sponge. I guess it would be ok if there was no sex fest like I had.
On the plus side it is formulated to feel like vaginal tissue so a guy shouldn't have any issue with "feeling" it.
edited to add: the instructions say it's normal to detect an odor and after using the 2nd sponge (which was left in for the maximum 30hours) yes there was an odor, not like an infection but one nonetheless and I actually started to think I DID have some sort of infection but it did go away. I never did use the second box I purchased.![]()

sounds nasty!..... so you aren't going to use them anymore by the sounds of it?

No.![]()
I tryed the sponge when it first came out. While it was easy to put in/take out, having to leave it in for as long as you're supposed to was somewhat icky. Just seemed like it was a breeding ground for bacteria etc...
Basically, the sponge, diaphrams, and cervical caps all have their drawbacks. I wouldn't use a diaphram because it increases the risk of UTIs, and I'm prone to them anyways. My doctor told me a cervical cap was a joke - impossible to place right and not all that effective. I've used the Sponge, but I couldn't leave it in as long as was necessary afterwards, 'cause I got all itchy. I think I'm allergic to it. Plus, since Sponges are not reusable, they could get kind of expensive.
Honey, use condoms or go on the pill.

I know I must sound ancient, but I loved mine. Loved it! However...although mine never flew across the floor or got batted around by a cat, Sirona is right about the technicalities.
I have very few options since I can't take estrogen, so when I'm in a monogamous relationship, the diaphragm is super easy!
Good luck! And protect yourself no matter what (who) you're doing!![]()

Wanted something a bit less 'in the way' then condoms (which I have been using) and birth control pills make me CRAZY!!!Originally Posted by Hottie7268
