    Approaching a Dancer about modeling?

    Hi, Everyone

Im in the Sacramento California area and I have been into photography for the last 3 years semi-professionally and I want to find out the best way to approach a dancer about being a model for some of my paying projects. We all know how gorgeous the dancers are and they would be very photogenic yet I think some of the dancers feel its like I am picking up on them ( im not even asking in a kreepy or distastful way either and still others have asked for my card and them kindof blew me off what do you girls think?

    - Thanks

bring a portfolio and be very professional. Also, how much are you paying? It should be around $200/hr if you want to be serious.

Very true ^. But still getting asked the same questiion over and over again when your dancing gets well.... "old." For you a legit guy as you say (no reason not to believe you) many jerks have ruined the "want to model thing." You know running an ad in a local newspaper or something of that nature would be fine. But hitting wome at work like that with modeling is really taking away from their job.

    Good luck,

I agree with Pamela, I think you'd have much better luck with an ad in the paper. Most cities have weekly papers that have a lot of local entertainment news in them. I'd think that would be your best bet.

Maybe give them samples of your work and references of people you have worked with would help

A portfolio is good. Take it with you. You won't be the first one they've seen - you won't be the last.

I'd suggest hitting the model sites like OMP or MuseCube or maybe posting at the art department of a local college or posting a "want ad" on an online photography forum for your area.

No offense to dancers, but if you're an accomplished photographer and need $200/hour for a dancer, you can find professional models who do this for their income who look great, pose nude, don't charge that much, and they know makeup and hair and posing. And also no offense to you, but if you've been a semi-professional photographer for three years, I'm a little surprised that you wouldn't know all this already.

Good luck. I really would caution you that a whole bunch of dancers don't appreciate guys with cameras trying to harvest models from the strip club. Just because they take their clothes off for money in person doesn't mean that they want their naked image immortalized on a Web site for the population of the world.

I do work with that kind of thing, models are so inexpensive its patently rediculous.

The range around here is like 8-10 an hour for a model to do just posing.
(fully clothed etc) You would not belive how many models there are, just put an add in the paper.
About 15 an hour for semi nude or nude artistic.
Once you get around 20+ an hour your talking full on porn.

Dont get me wrong, people charge more than this, this is just avarage. For "feature models" the price gets just insane. One lady my friend used for a shoot was like 4k just for a few hours.

I have seen people pay 400 dollars for an 8 hour bondage shoot, this included some crazy water stuff.

If you are hard core bent on using dancers It will cost probably 4-8x what you would pay normaly. Just because they make so much at the regular job.

I agree with them, definately put an add in the paper and have all your model release forms.

Sometimes you can get people to do TFP (time for print)
You basicaly do half the shoot for you and half the shoot for them.
They get a photographer, and you get a model to practice with.

If you do nude photography though there are some serious legal things to deal with. 18 Us code 2257 comes to mind, You have to hold onto the documentation of the shoot. And if your company goes away, you still have to hold that information for a further 5 years.

I know its alot, I hope that helps.

Find a way to guarantee their security concerns up front, and you'll find much of their reluctance goes away - until you're either "known" or have found a way to convince them you're for real, and not just some clown trying a different angle, they're going to suspect ulterior motives... and understandably so, right?

I'm just saying...if he wants to take a dancer outside the club, he's going to have to pay dancer rates.

We're not interested in modeling, or we'd be modeling. We're strippers. So pay us accordingly, or go find a model.

WHAT? Who models for $20 an hour? Nevermind, no one will ever admit to that. Not to mention $8 an hour. That's hardly more than minimum wage. I can't believe this.

    Wow,

Great responses I really appreciate all the great comments, I have had a portfolio on onemodelplace.com for over two years and have had great success using that web site, I dont go around harvesting ( great choice in words ) models from strip clubs I do believe as another post read that with the right approach and proving that one is on the level and competent that using a dancer is not beyond the realm or reality theres a very well known club in the area has a whole section on there web site about the dancers and includes a pay portion that is all modeling content. Thats what got my intrest. The portfolio thing is great yet I dont know about bringing something like that to a club either if the security would or wouldnt care who knows. Well I have to run thanks again and take care.

    Sincerely, Jeff

No matter what you say how you approach and ask this question you are going to seem like you're trying to pick someone up,unfortunately it's not the appropriate place and time to be a model scout......

    Well,

Its seems to be a mixed view on the subject. Thats what free speech is all about. I appreciate all comments. I will stick with my modeling web sites that seems to work awesome and I have been greatly rewarded for my efforts with diffrent charity events I have covered in my semi pro hobby of photography Thanks all.

Midas - did we ever shoot? I dont know... Ive done so many shoots... anyway - $200/hr (as you know) is WAY too much. $100/hr is typical for glamour stuff. Anywho- LOTS of the girls at Centerfolds and City Limits do photoshoots... LOTS... Id say go there... lots of photographers do! This is the BEST TIME to find models too... with XMas comming up the clubs slow down and the dancers work more because they need money... start hitting them up!

Just ask if they'd be interested in a photoshoot. BRING your portfolio, girls will be more interested if they can SEE youre actually a photographer and not some guy. Its also good to have references too!! Once you get one girl to shoot she will usually come back and let the girls know that it was a good shoot (or bad one) and it goes from there!

    Good luck!!

I really don't like to cut some of your posts. Jeff if you would like personal business with another poster please take it off the board. A personal message would be fine. If our messages benefit the rest of the posters on this board that's great. NO advertising, and NO spamming.

    Pamela,

I appreciate knowing why you say that I am breaking any rules on here. I dont belive there where any underlying tones to any of my messages. Thanks for the concern yet If telling someone we havent done any work together is a problem then let me know I dont want to cause any trouble, I thought under the forum for other work it would be ok so what is acceptable? I did look where I started this message with care knowing that I dont want to cause any problems Thanks and have great day.

What i read and deleted was personal information, only. Not that you two have done no work together before. Please in the future if you want to give out photographer number, and asking for pictures of models, do so in a private message. Not in the public forum.

    Thank you,

    Pamela
