    Default Quitting Smoking with Wellbutrin?

    hey everyone..
i want to try to quit smoking for the 3rd time... cold turkey and the patch didn't do well with me... but last night
one of the girls at the club i work with said that she had great success quitting smoking when taking wellbutrin, i have heard it is very similar to the drug zyban... she also mentioned that she experienced increased libido and slight weight loss.. this sounds too good to be true... i know drugs affect everyone differently.. but i'd like to see if anyone has had success using wellbutrin to quit smoking... thanks

    xoxo

This drug is an antidepressant. It had a higher rate of seizures, if taken in higher dosage than others. I Know a few people who work at the hsopital who are (or had) tried it. Some loved it, said they stopped! Others had a few side effects that they did not want to deal with.

    Good luck,
    Pamela

I used Wellbutrin when I quit smoking (it'll be a year on Nov. 25 ) it is great. It makes you feel a lot less anxious and stressed than you would be if you quit smoking cold turkey. You have to get a prescription for it from your doctor of course. I also experienced slight weight loss. A lot of prescription drugs have side effects associated with them I wouldn't let the seizure thing scare you off from it because that is quite rare. Another thing that may help you is the American Cancer Society quit smoking helpline 1-877-822-6669. They call you up once before you quit, once right after, and once in just over a week. They go over methods to help you deal with stress and not smoking, it really helped me having another person to be accountable to. Good Luck!!!

Wellbutrin is like crack. It's short-acting and highly addicting. I wouldn't recommend it. Read Prozac Backlash if you want horror stories about SSRIs. Basically, you shouldn't screw with your neurotransmitters unless you're suicidal.

Besides reading, has anyone had horrible experiences with SSRIs? I think they saved my life.

Well, they definitely kept me alive long enough to worry about quitting smoking.

From my experience with Zoloft when I was 21, I'd have to agree.^

From The Pill Book 9th Ed.
"Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban)...is chemically different from other antidepressants and is similar to diethylpropion, an appetite suppressant."

Doesn't seem to be either an SSRI or an MAOI.

I used Zyban to quit my two plus pack a day habbit. In May it will be three years without a smoke. It worked for me but the side affects were bad. I expeienced what I would assume were panic attacts, one timed I freaked out while driving over a bridge, I thought if someone swerved into me I'd go off the bridge and die, not something I normally experience. The slightest thing would make me angry and I'd through a temper tamptrum.

I've heard of people have side affects similar to these. I didn't take it for the full three months because of this, only for about two or two and a half months. Would I do it again? To quit smoking, yes. I had tried every other way and this is what worked for me. I can be around smokers, my husband still smokes, and it doesn't bother me at all. Just be very careful if you do decide to take Zyban or Welbutrin. Be sure to ask your doctor about all possible side affects and good luck!

I know someone who quit using it and loved it, but I've tried it twice and felt so awful the first week I was taking it that I had to stop. It sucked. Like all of these drugs, people have different reactions to them, so be aware of that. I have tried to quit three times this year. Years ago, when my fiance and I were just, ahem, "buddies," he asked me if I'd ever quit. I jokingly said, "Sure, honey, I'll quit when we move in together." Here it is, four weeks before we're going to move in together, and I have to put out.

Anyhow, good luck, people quit all the damn time, so it's possible. Just sucky.

Alcohol affects neurotransmitters. Should only suicidal people drink wine?

We're talking about using it for smoking cessation - please!
Actually, look at this -> http://www.wellbutrin-xl.com/pdf/PI.pdf#patient
It says right at the top of the patient information that it does act on serotonin. Please try not to be rude. Although it is not technically an SSRI, it is often grouped with them because of its effects on serotonin levels.

Here's a quote from Prozac Backlash...this is what I meant when I said it was like crack: "Wellbutrin is one of the shortest-acting of the new antidepressants, lasting only hours. In part because its effects wear off quickly, Wellbutrin is often taken several times a day. In this regard, Wellbutrin resembles short-acting amphetamine-type drugs, such as Dexedrine or Ritalin, which are also taken several times a day." I would have to check, but I believe that due to the fact that it is so short-acting, it has been proven to be more addicting than longer-acting anti-depressants, such as Prozac.

You're right, alcohol affects neurotransmitters too. So does cheese. That's why you're not supposed to have either if you're on an MAOI. The difference really is in the dosing. Taking Wellbutrin is certainly going to affect them significantly more than a glass of wine. Really, people have been reporting more and more serious problems with both SSRIs, and the "new" class of anti-depressants that Wellbutrin belongs to since they first came out.

Are you willing to risk a psychotic episode in order to quit smoking easier? How about permanent muscle tics if you stay on the drugs for a long time? Seriously read up on the side effects of ANY medication if you're taking if for something that's not absolutely necessary to make an informed decision if it's worth the risk.

Enough of this! I'm done with school for eight months, until I go to graduate school. No more psychology!
