    Default Room Heater

    Hey Everyone!

I'm buying a room heater on Friday for my Father. He doesn't have central heating and I want him to stay warm this winter!
Does anyone know what watage is good for a heater? I'm assuming this is the most important thing....
I found one with 1500 watts - is this enough?

Your help - as always - is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

It depends upon the size of the area that you are wanting to keep warm.

Also, what really helps is getting window film for the windows...especially if the windows are old and drafty. It'll help keep the warm in and cold out.

What brand of heater are you looking to get?

You need to know what size room(s) you're trying to heat. If you're buying from a store the salespeople should know what size heater is sufficient for the room. Or it might say on the package, something to the effect of "for rooms up to xx square feet". Get the square feet of the room by multiplying the length times the width, in feet. A 12' wide x 10' long room is 120 square feet.

1500 watts is the highest you can get in a 110V heater (one that plugs into a normal wall socket). Even the 1500 Watt heaters are not really safe with older wiring. LOTS of houses burn down every winter due to these small electric heaters. Be careful.

Walmart sells one with a thermostat (slightly safer) for $15.

I shop at Costco and every winter they put these up. I walk by and instantly feel the heat.

I feel like getting one for next to the computer so I don't have to heat the whole house. I spend most of my waking hours here anyway!

Also note these heaters are monster energy hogs. Look at the heat they put out for the electricity or you are giving your dad a killer electric bill too.

The one Emily mentioned looked good on this count.

A 1500 watt electric heater will just about be the maximum load for one electric circuit in a house. This means that if your dad wants to plug in this heater on a circuit that has other things connected to it as well, that it's very probable the circuit breaker will trip / fuse will blow. If that's the case then you're better off getting him a smaller heater like 750w or 1000w.

PS running a 1500w heater will cost somewhere between 8 and 15 cents per hour, depending on local electric rates.

This pdf from an electician has some interesting observations in the box on the right of the page.

One feature to consider is an anti-tip-over shut off--good safety feature which is pretty common on models and a number of them have remotes as well as thermostats.

I bought one of these from Costco last year and I like it a lot. I also have a Honeywell oil filled heater but, IMO its a bit of an eletricity hog.

Thanks for the tip Venus. My windows are old and drafty but, I am not able to get them replaced right now. I plan on heading over to Home Depot tomorrow and pick some up.

You are welcome! Another thing you can do is caulk around the frames (where a lot of drafts tend to come in). If you do this during warmer weather, caulk it on the outside as well. We did that...we have older windows...and although the windows are still a little drafty...with the caulk and the film...our heating bill dropped drastically, and it's much warmer in here.

Thanks for the tips guys! I saw the one at costco and wondered if it was worth it. My dad's house is really small and he doesn't get cold easily. I just want to buy something decent. The wiring isn't the best and the reason he's in a bad house right now is his other one burned down last spring due to the wiring. So I am really concerned with safety - Plus he has lots of cats which leave the potential of it getting knocked over.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll find a good deal otherwise I'll just get the costco one.

I'd like to add PLEASE be careful ....when I was young my moms house caught on fire because of a room heater. It was very scary luckily the things that were lost were replaceable. Try to find out if any certain items have been recalled recently.
