Default dyeing hair red over old blond, ADVISE?

Right now my hair has lots of blond highlights. I'd like to dye red over it, and I'd like to use the shade I used many years ago, so I wont be going to a pro. My roots are a little grown out, and I'm sure there's a little damage in some places. I need advise on how to get an even color, so that my grown out roots are not darker than everything else, and the parts that have been highlighted don't fade. Bleaching everything first is not an option. Don't want that much damage. Any advise?

I recently had my hair colored from platinum blonde like Rose Delight's to a chocolate brown.

The only thing I would suggest is make sure you let a professional salon do the job. I would not do it on your own....

I would definately consult a professional. Dyes are tricky, especially red, & especially over prev. dyed hair. Also, I have dyed my roots only, myself (only when I absolutely have to, & can't afford a pro). I can tell you honestly, store bought hair dyes are NOT near the same as professional products, they are not made as strong, so people making mistakes w/them are less likely to sue. Therefore, results can be iffy. Two beauticians verified this. Some salons have discounts, with newer beauticians. At least have a consultation somewhere, they're free. Good luck

red is an easy color....but you may want to dye it a darker color red if you are dying over blonde because that will make it lighter than you want it. if you have the money go to a salon

You should use a protein filler (no color) to even out the texture (porous) of your hair, it will help hair color apply more evenly.

The reason I don't want to go to a pro is that I used to dye my own hair this beautiful red from feria, and I want to dye it back that same color, just before it was over virgin hair, and this time it will be over blond.

I'm sure you'll be just fine, do a strand test to see how it turns out.

Just make sure that you follow the manufacturers directions carefully.

    One word: Professional.

Had a friend do the red over blonde a while back ago. Ended up that the hair ended up more of a pink color. If your hair is bleached to get the blonde look, then you are much better off spending the extra money and having a pro dye your hair...

If you add a little drop of dark blonde to the dye it will prevent your hair from turning pink.goodluck, tell us how it turns out.

I actually did the opposite. I had lots of red hi lites. Then, I wanted blond. Over about 8 mo. time, the sylist gradually pur a lt. brown over, then, when covered (& haviing had a few trims), gradually added a few blond hi lites. It was much better for my hair, & was pleased w/results. I would still advise a pro, at least get a consultation since you have a different color hair now. Definiately use a filler.

All i know is hair that is already bleached will grab the colour fast and hard! Your natural roots will not grab so fast, (should not) I would try a strand test perhaps on your head, but underneath just a tad. Also mixing 2 products does work well. Loreal is what i use for all my streaking, and going brown looks, they have a customer support toll free, the person will tell you what colour to start with, and if you may need to mix half and half of two different colours, that is what i have done to get brown over my blonde before.

Wow...just don't do the whole head off the bat if your not sure. A couple strands that lie close to the top of the head would be great. If you like the look when they are dry, do your whole head.

Maybe you can take the Feria box to the salon and have them match the color for you?

I had blond high lighted hair 3 years ago and dyed it red with no problem. However, as recommended br other members use a darker shade of red. My came out red with the highlighted parts a lighter shade. If you are to paranoid to do it o your own then ase a professional. By the way, my hair is still red to this day!
