    Default Check engine light?

Well, I just got a new used car (2001 Hyundai) and the check engine light came on. So....I called the dealership. They said it's probably the gas cap loose and I should see if it goes off after a week or so. Does this seem right? I have been driving it around, and it has not gone off. Are they just being slack? I'm not the best with cars, but I don't think ignoring it is the way to go.

You should probably just take it in and have them double-check everything and make sure it's working correctly. We have a '96 Ford Escort, and everything is done by computer basically. So when our check engine light came on shortly after buying it, we brought it into them. It was some miniscule thing that doesn't affect the performance of the car at all, just a "glitch", but I'm glad we got it checked just in case. Oh, and it's still on by the way.. LOL

Just have them check it out. I don't think that ignoring it is the answer, unless they tell you it's nothing.

    Good Luck

It is true that a loose gas cap will do that. It could even be a bad gasket. Regardless, take it back and tell them to fucking figure it out.

Yes, it is true. It happened in my Miata at least twice.

Drive it for a week. Unless you enjoy hanging around the dealers and paying $50 to have them look at something that doesn't need to be fixed.

If you bought it from a dealer take it back to them and tell them to figure it out. That would be the safest and best thing you can do. I only suggest this because it is a used car. I work on cars every day(damn day job) and have been doing the same thing since 1986 and even though it is possible that the gas cap being off will cause the engine light to come on, it is best just to have them check to make sure. It could save you alot of money in the long run.

Hyundai's...while not the bestest quality cars in teh world are pretty good....and they have the best warranty out there. This shoul dbe under warranty. So find out if it is...have them run a diagnostic test and they can tell you exactly why the light is on.

Tightening the gas cap and restarting the car would fix the problem right away if that was it....it doesnt take a week.

Sometimes, too, if the car needs a tune-up, the light will come on. That's what happened with our VW. Kind of a "reminder". Scared the crap out of me, though...they should just make a "tune me up" light.

I would definitely take it in...

Actually the "check engine" light is an indication of something being wrong with the emissions of the car. However a loose gap cap will trigger it. If you tighten the gas cap and it doesn't go away, take it back to the dealer and make them fix it.

Most cars today have their check engine lights come on when there is something wronf in the emissions system. Generally it is an oxygen sensor that has gone bad. There is usually one both before, and after the catalytic converter. That is the common problem. I know of the states I have lived in, they are all doing emmisions testing when it is time to get your car inspected. Your car will not pass this test when it comes time if the oxygen sensor is bad. Looking at somewhere between $100-$225 for the oxygen sensor, not including labor. If you bought the car with any type of warrenty, get it fixed now so that it doesn't cost you!

My check engine light came on when I had transmissions problems with my truck. That light could mean anything. Demand that they check it out it will save you a lot of trouble.

Check all your fluids and make sure they are all up to par. Does it sound loud or mean when you drive it? I have a 95 ford escort (Fix Or Repair Daily) and its does that mess all the time.
Yea, it can be a gas cap or something serious. You say you just bought it they should look at it for free. If it hasnt been that long. Also, its also a reminder of just random checks that should be done with the car light. I would take it in only because you just bought it and its just a good idea before something might go wrong.

    Fushia,
Take your car to be checked out by the dealership. Its hould still be under warranty. My sister has the same car and the same year. I am not sure what model you have. Her check engine light came on ALL the time because of the gas cap. You have to buy a special one from the dealership. We learned this when I went with her to see why the check engine light KEPT coming on. There have been at least one recall on the car so you might want to take it in to be checked out ASAP, they'll repair it for free

I take ti in, the comoputer says it has something to do with the thermastat, but they've replaced it and everyone has told me to ignore it now. My boyfriend who is a mechanic says that it could be a dirty or broken sensor....anyways take yours in...do they have soem scam where if you take it in after a week you have to pay more for repairs or something?
