It's going to Hell in a hand basket.
"The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind."
-Humphrey Bogart
"Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your drink."
-Lady Astor to Winston Churchill
"Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it."
-His reply
"If God had intended us to drink beer, He would have given us stomachs."
-David Daye

It certainly looks that way.

Everytime there's an atrocity - suicide, mother killing her children, spouse murdering spouse - people say it's a sign of the decay of society - as if this sort of thing hasn't happened since the dawn of time. This sort of thing has always been going on - not to lessen the horror but I don't think it points to things getting worse. Sadly, I think what we have now is probably human society better off than it ever has been.
It's like when people talk about the 1950's as being this golden age of morality in America - you never hear an old black woman saying "Oh, the seats on the back of the bus were so much more comfortable" or you never hear a woman saying "Damn, I can't decide what to do with my life, if only I was locked into a gender role that only gave me the options of mother, nurse or teacher."

In this competitive media world of 500 cable channels, internet, and other near instant communication, stories involving death tend to get a lot more press now than they used to.
"We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde, who comes on at five
She can tell you ’bout the plane crash, with a gleam in her eye
It’s interesting when people die.......give us dirty laundry."
-Don Henley
That song came out more than 20 years ago, and its probably more appropriate today. Consider this the next time you watch the news and they lead off the program with a story like this. Take into consideration the millions of people who didn't get shot, or didn't commit suicide or thousands of planes that landed safely that day.
Former SCJ now in rehab.

...and people wonder why I don't watch the news...
Why would I want such negativity in my life? They hardly ever report anything good. The only news, for me, that is worth watching is my local "Gold Coast" news. To fill in the half hour slot that they have.. and since Gold Coast isn't always full of those sensational-ist stuff... they have to put in the good stuff... it can a rather "positive" news half-hour.
