    From Dancer to Realtor

I'm sure you've all heard of (or even known) dancers who try their hand at real estate. Well, I just got my real estate license and am now wondering, "what do I tell brokers I have been doing for the past year (that I have been dancing)?"

I have a customer who says he will say that I have been doing clerical/administrative work for him for the past year, but honestly, I don't want to lie about it. What happens if they start asking me specific questions like, "give us an instance where you had a deal with a client,......" That might be hard to bullsh*t since I don't know what goes on with this customer's company.

I'm thinking that I just want to be honest about dancing. I don't want to work for a company who hires liars. They should like me for who I am. Then again, people in the real world are a little more judgmental than people in the "fantasy world."

    Someone, HELP!!!

Why don't you talk to this customer about what goes on in his business, then you'll have an idea of what to say. Also, many of the questions they might ask you will be vague, like, "Say you have a customer who's unhappy with the service," etc. Certainly you can answer those yourself.

I know several dancers who've gone on to become realtors and they've done well for themselves, so it can definitely be done. And I think the extensive customer service experience we gain as dancers is an asset. Good luck to you.

Thanks. I guess that's the best route. I asked the guy what I "did" in his office and he couldn't give me any specifics. I might just use my sister as a reference. I think I'm thinking too hard about all of this!!! You'd think I would have mastered the art of bullsh*t after working in clubs over a year. haha

Telling any potential employers that you were an exotic dancer is just asking not to get hired. Whatever you have to do, find an alternate explanation. You can always state that you were developing your own business and use friends as references.

As a broker, I have hired several dancers. Do not lie and claim you have experiance that you dont. When he or she asks what you did before, just tell them you were in school. If they ask how you handle a client, then give them an answer. Stripping is sales, and you can draw experiance from that and put into real estate terms.

Unfortunately, in businesses which involve "public image", this statement is almost always true. You're better off simply stating that you were a student.

I wouldn't tell any potential employer I was a stripper. Unfortunately, most folks won't be as "understanding" about it as scorpio. Most will automatically disqualify you based on that, even if you are better qualified for the job than any other candidate they see. It sucks, but unfortunately we are basically forced to lie in order to be given half a chance in the "real" world.

Actually, I've considered trying real estate myself. While I haven't done anything towards getting my real estate license yet, I have checked into it a little (congrats on getting your license btw). While I agree, you shouldn't tell the broker you were a dancer, I think you might be worrying more than you need to. If I understand right, you work only on commission, and pay a percentage of your sales commission to the agency to cover their overhead (sounds kind of like a house fee, huh?). So if you think about it, by hiring you, the agency is really only going to be out little money for overhead. They probably have an extra desk sitting in the back anyway so why not take a chance on you? Seems like they have every incentive to hire as many agents as they can, within reason of course (kind of like a strip club huh?). I'm not saying that they will hire anyone off the street, but I don't think they are going to do some in depth investigation into your past life either.

Thanks for your input, everyone. I spoke with a Realtor and he suggested that I not even worry about the year of "unemployment" (that being the 1+ years that I've danced). He said that several people enter into real estate without any prior work experience. So, all that fuss for nothing!

I hate to lie about it, but most people don't understand the "industry" that we are in. If only they could walk in our shoes! Literally!

    Happy Holidays, Everyone!

    Good advice there.

But if you don't handle customers at your recent "administrative work", you'll have to use the general experience you've gotten. Just remember that selling real estate is nothing like nor anywhere near selling a fantasy about something you KNOW you will never deliver. You could try to impress them with your ability to handle details and responsibilities that come up when preparing to transfer real estate and keeping decriptions in your head while dealing with different customers.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

    Update!

I've been on two interviews with brokers. Everything has gone pretty smoothly. They just want to see someone with drive. They barely asked about past experience. If they were going in that direction, I would just say that I was in school for the past year. Thanks everyone. Hope this helps anyone else interested in getting into real estate.

You could always just say you didn't work, played video games, watched TV, movies, etc. Hey, that's what my brother has spent a lot of his life doing!

My business partner just got her real estate license and got a mortage broker job. She's done nothing since grad school and used to dance. I am thinking of getting into this myself. It appears to be a good field for a hustler since its commission based. Good luck!
