I had been discussing the way in which the media has been handling this 'War on Terror' with my girlfriend, when I made the observation that FOX news was basically propaganda. This lead to a rather heated but friendly debate.
Then, during Thanksgiving, I actually had the dubious pleasure of watching FOX News in the home of a staunch Bush supporter (my father), who prefers to get his news from this source.
Some routine news was on, something or other about the prospects for the retail industry during the upcoming Christmas season, when suddenly, a dramatic musical fanfare stridently commanded the attention of all, followed by a most impressive animation/special effects visual display of a snazzy logo, which spun around and snapped into place with additional sound effects.
The War on Terror
This introduction, which was worthy of a Marvel Comics movie title scene, was followed by a plasticised and impeccably groomed female anchor with a cheesy smile, flawlessly delivering the latest update from Fallujah.
It was downright funny--in a frightening way, and reminded me of the first (and only good) "Robocop" TV News segments, which were blatantly satirical in nature.
Then came the "fair and balanced" O'Reilly, which was also comical, though not quite so frightening.
All this talk of the (evil) 'liberal' press bias is kind of pointless, with drivel like this being pumped out and greedily lapped up by millions of American voters.
While conservative publications like The Wall Street Journal are well worth the time it takes to read them, even (or especially) if one might not always agree with the viewpoint, I can't see the value of FOX News, except possibly to a warmongering and mendacious Administration.
