Thumbs down Doing your own French Manicure

I bought the sally hansen manicure set to do your own manicure. It came with the white and a pinkish nail polish and some strip guide to place on your nails.

The problem is that I use the guide but they don't seem to be doing their job. They lift up a little bit when i put the white nail polish on and when i take the guides off my nail polish is all crooked and ugly :-( (I do wait till the nail polish is dry. )

Am I not doing something wrong? could be wrong product? or is the doing your own french manicure just too much to do yourself? How come the guides don't stick that well?

This gets me confused because when I was in high school I remember this girl would say she would do it herself and they looked great. and I figured she used the same product I'm using.

If you're going to use the guides...paint up to them...not over them. It'll help a little. Also, move the guides off when the polish it still wet.

    I don't use guides...I do it free-hand...just is better.

I've never been able to give myself a french manicure. Not even on my toes. I'm not that gifted. I always had to have a friend do mine for me.

i do them freehand, it works better for me as well. make sure you press the guide down to all sides of the nail, ive evenstuck it under the nail tip. and take VG's advice, paint up to it, not over it, it keeps it from getting under as much... good luck!

One thing I've found with using the home kits is that when you put the little white strip thingy down, you want to really push down on it and seal it to your nail, that way none of the polish can sneak under there and give you those jagged edges. I usually place it where I want it, and then take a coin or something and rub along the edges to make sure it's attached firmly. And I also let the polish dry before I pull it up, otherwise I end up smearing the polish. It takes a little effort, but it works for me.

I do them myself, I use white tips and put natural acrylic over them, this way you dont have to keep painting them,Sometimes I put the white acrylic over the tipand the pink on the nail bed ,depending on If I have time or not.

when I did it myself, I always found it easier to just paint the chevron instead. I was always a fan of the fancy french anyhow. Put a fake diamond in the point and good to go!

I use Kiss brand and take off the strips when still wet. If there is an uneven one I just dip a q-tip in pollish remover and fix it. And as said before make sure it is completely pressed down. I'll use my other nails or if they're wet my teeth. For bonus pretty, try a light shimmery pink on top instead of the one that comes in the package. Covergirl has a great 3 in 1 shade called pinky winky, looks great! Good luck!

I do my own french mani. I use the sally hanson perfect line. I just go freehand and do them flawlessly. When I was younger I tried doing the strip thing and could never do it!!! A tip to doing to freehand is not try to do the tip in one swipe. Start at one edge and go to just past the middle. Then the same from the outer edge. It'll be a little whiter where the layers overlap, but I usually do two coats anyway.

It might be easier to do it without the guides. Just paint the tips white, you can be sloppy, then use an artist brush or paint brush dipped in polish remover to clean up the over stroke. this way you have control over the white part. then after it's dry, add your clear or pink or whatever...

I do this when I feel too cheap to get my nails done. I learned better on my toes, but then again I'm just bass akwards...

instead of using those strips why not just freehand. Instead of tryin to paint a line straight across, start to a line going to the middle of the nail on each side, then connect them both in the middle. Fill in whatever is left in the middle to make it look like its across the whole tip of the nail. if you also get a small lil paint brush you can dip that in acetone and wipe up whatever is not even with the rest of the paint( do this only if you paint the white first on top of the base coat.
