Default where does the money go?!

something i have pondered for QUITE some time ( and im sure theres a million threads about this already, sorry)

    but...

does anyone else have vanishing cash problems?!!

case in point, i have been dancing for 2 years and 5 months. but 5.5 of those months i was broken(boob) so off work, so lets say dancer A danced for 2 years exactly to even things out.

dancer A works 4 night per week, making on average $1500 per week.
dancer A has NO shopping addiction,no drug addiction, doesnt even smoke ciggerettes, drink alchole, has no social life, has no leaching bf or friends, no car, no NOTHING!

    why is this?

lol where the hell does dancer A`s money go every week?!

once dancer A watched oprah, and oprah said something about writing down every single thing ya spend money on, no matter how small, to see where it all goes.

dancer A found that of the $1500, 300,went on rent, 100 on phone bill, 30 on electricity,100 on random things she needed etc and a whopping $600 was spent on food! 600 bucks eaten, just like that!!!!!!

now, dancer A is by no means fat, so how the hell does dancer A manage to spend that much money on food, not get fat, and have no money?!

    riddle me that.

other then food, where the hell else does cash go?!

People tend to spend according to income. I make a hell of a lot more at 37 than I did at 22 fresh out of college, and my lifestyle is nicer, but not THAT much nicer. I just scrimped and saved more then. If I spent now like I spent then, I'd probably have twice the savings that I do now.

Do you eat out or order in everyday? If you spend $20 everyday eating thats almost $600 a month. Thats what I do

Yeah, the eating out thing makes money magically disappear much faster than if you stick to store baught groceries. I've saved tons of money by just sticking to the groceries. Plus it's more healthy; even if you are thin.

Hyde is right. Making all cash makes such a difference too. It makes it really hard to manage money. There is always more coming the next day you work so you can justify things and it's also hard to keep a record of what you spend.

I went from a service industry job to a salary job a few years ago. It was a small raise over what I made before but it was so much easier to manage my money.

Food is a major sink for money. It's way too easy to spend $10 and barely be full. Even a crappy meal at McD's can set you back $7. Because of the hours you might work it's really hard to cook and if you are single it's also hard to cook for yourself only. Try cooking meals that are easily reheated in advance. You'll save money and eat healthier food.

For me lately hotels are included in that equation and in NYC that eats up A LOT of money; even "cheap" hotels cost $150 a night.

But aside from that, I too eat out way too much, but the cost of food even in grocery stores has gotten so high (since I try to avoid the hyper-processed foods that tend to be cheapest) that a meal at my favorite cheapie Thai or vegan take-away in Baltimore costs about the same as cooking in.

Also the whole "latte factor". I find that when one tends to have a wad of cash "burning a hole in the pocket" it's easy to spend it on little things here and there like a new lipstick or whatever. Also, dancers tend to spend more money on grooming.

Yesterday I spent $20 for a Mystic Tan, $40 for a manicure/pedicure. Customer took me out to lunch (free, heh heh...) then dinner in Chinatown ($13). Taxis and hotel cost another $200. This was all in one day. Not to mention the fees at PEC, which hover around $200 a night. Being a stripper is damn expensive!

I like to buy more things for my friends and boyfriend, like dinner, or drinks when we are out. I also tip excessively, but I don't mind that at all. For me, I spend tooooo much money on civilian clothes and toiletries, and I only indulge in Nordstrom on occasion......

Although I only do this on occasion, creating a daily/weekly/monthly budget, printing it out, and carring it with you in a planner, is the only way to keep your finances in order.......

I'm assuming you're working with some bizzaro-world food costs there. The only way I could spend $600 a week on food would be to eat every single meal out at a great restaurant. I could eat every single meal out at a goodrestaurant here and spend half that. As it is my food costs usually hover around $150 a week; a lot of breakfasts on the run, a lot of coffee bought out, and a couple of dinners and lunches out. The rest on groceries.

The reason I don't have any money now is because of school. I've only been able to work about 5-7 days a month all fall long. I'm gonna have so much fucking money when I can work four days a week . . .

I have to agree, eating out all the time can cost a bundle.
I know when I have extra money I tend to treat myself to restaurant meals much more easily...I just have no will power to resist sushi and good seafood, atleast these arent things I can easily make at home.

I know I should budget better than I do...Im good for a while then slip up ...If I were better Im sure I wouldnt find myself asking...where did it go ..quite so often.
As I have matured,I have learned "that one good turn....usually gets most of the blankets",-)

I agree... food eats a big hole through my wallet. While I was saving for my car I did that thing where I wrote down every little expenditure. Initially it came to about $400 a week on food and $150-$200 on little miscellaneous things like chewing gum, single bottles of water/juice, etc... After noticing that during the first week of saving I stopped immediately and I had so much more money! But I've gone back to bad habits, darn.

Damn.. I am boring. I actually do know where all my money goes. I have MYOB and enter everything in that.. be it for personal, business or on behalf of my flatmate or a friend.

Basically, since I work Sun-Wed usually at my home club.. I bank Sun and Mon earnings on Monday.. then bank Tues and Wed earnings on Wednesday. (If I work Wed-Sat.. I bank Wed and Thu earning on Friday then keep Fri and Sat earning to be banked Monday) For some reason, I do not get tempted to spend the cash as I know it is BEFORE TAX cash. I only spend my after tax cash. (I am very strict with myself in re: tax... as I see it as a form of savings whilst also something that I cannot avoid)

... and even then.. I know what I spend my after tax cash on. I record all my deposits and withdrawals. I do not buy anything with cash anymore (unless it is a store like The Good Guys).

Eating out.. well.. after reading all my Rich Dad, Poor Dad and similiar books... I hardly ever eat out. Even if I do eat out.. I always try and take the meal home with me so it can last for two meals not just one.

I am going to offer a conservative comment here.

Compare dancer lifestyles to those of family people. Many dancers live from hand to mouth whereas non dancers who earn the same money don't.

Nina Daisy is an exception working in Manhattan, since there is no parking, no discount grocery stores and no $200 a week extended stay suites.

Number one, dancers who don't already could live a more settled life by staying in extended stay suites which have refrigerators and microwaves and weekly rates when they travel. I travel every week and we have a microwave and large ice chest with us, a kitchen bag with utensils and some basic dishes, a bag of spices and a pyrex dish for cooking in the microwave. We only stay where we can get weekly rates and only in downstairs outside entrance rooms where parking is available at the door for easy loading and unloading.

We never eat out, except for maybe a fast food meal one day a week while working. We cook in the microwave, eat cereal, fruit and juice for breakfast, and buy microwaveable frozen veggies or make salads and fix fresh meats like chicken breasts, fish, and pork chops or pot pies.

Dancers need to watch for sales just like family people do and buy several months worth of paper products, cereal and other things they use regularly when on sale. Cut coupons out of the paper on Sunday just like non dancers do. Shop at the cheapest stores in town such as Super Wal Mart if available or warehouse stores. A box of cereal that costs $2.98 at Wal Mart oftentimes is $4.39 or so in the other stores.

I go to off price stores like Big Lots and 99 cent only stores to get certain items that we use if they have them and buy extra.

The on the go lifestyle is costly and if more dancers do weekly shopping and cook or prepare all their meal in the microwave, take their bottled water and sodas to the club (buy gallon water and refill your jugs and refill your liter bottles you take to work) a single dancer should be able to eat for around $60 or so a week.

When I work in Montana since there is no sales tax, I load up on enough non food items I use regularly to last until I come back and buy whatever clothes I can there also. I buy all of my Bath and Body and Victorias Secret lotions, gels and body sprays there, about 2 months worth at a time as the money saved on not paying sales tax adds up.

When I am off work in a major city and on the go we go to Boston Market a that way can get a balanced dinner, but eating out regularly is unhealthy and costly.

Stability of dancers I see as the problem. The more a dancer treats dancing like a non dancer treats her mainstream job, and lives more like a mainstream person, the less impulse spending will occur and the more money will be saved.

How many mainstream people have empty cupboards at home or have to run to 7-11 in the middle of the night to buy overpriced toilet paper and pet food? How many mainstream people eat out every day and don't watch how much they pay for groceries?

The more us dancers structure our work schedules and shopping and spending patterns after family people, the more money we will have to show from our efforts.

Food is one of those hidden killers. $5 here for that snack on the way home, $5-$10 there for the quick dinner before work. A few $ now and then for Bottled water, cans of coke, packets of snacks, it all adds up, nearly $40-$50 per day.

That was a great point Tina....like if you pretend your "poor" then you will just save more automatically. Since, Im not dancing right now I do see that most of my money goes towards eating out, junk etc. Not such a good idea. Plus, it would be great to live next to no tax state. I , like you , would by everything I could.

Food can easily eat up a lot of my $$$. I hate to cook and am not very good at it either. It seems like the more you make the more you have to spend. I guess it takes money to make money. Of course it doesn't help that the Vuitton store called my name into it today. It can be so hard to save money when it's so fun to spend but I try.

hmm, my bf is getting up me cos i made a comment last night " i cant afford to pay $200 for a BAG" as i couldnt justify that kinda money, then he said " well you just spent $800 at disneyland so whats the difference?" lol

    good point.
somehow i can justify spending wads of cash if its all say 5 bucks, 20 bucks here and there, which adds up to a fortune, but on ONE hit, its a bit more difficult to justify.

maybe, to cut down food bills, i should just stop eating! (im joking)

another thing i learnt today, i was out with a "normal waged" mate, he mantioned looking in student magazines as they often have advertisments for really cheap eating places etc, that we probably wouldnt notice.

Big Big Big difference between visiting Disneyland, and buying a bag. Return value for pleasing yourself is much higher with the Disneyland encounter. The Bag is an impulse pleasure which won't last long.

I think a thread for recipes would be great. Lately I eat once a day or bad takeout on the way home. Recipes would be very helpful and appreciated.
