Default What's up with shifty Ebay? *grrr my rant*

It just seems like I CAN'T win an auction on Ebay. Why do I get the feeling that some sellers create an account for the express purpose of swiping their own item as to not sell it so cheap? What's up with a new (less than 30 days old) account with ZERO feedback swiping an item from me WITH THREE GODDAM SECONDS LEFT IN THE AUCTION? WITH ONE BID? Are new bidders be THAT savvy? Do you think I have a legitamate gripe? Or do I just need to be sneaky too?

yeah, tell me about it. since I was having crappy luck with the auctions, I decided to go the Ebay store route. I had a lovely top, very classy yet sexy. Everbody loved it on me. Until I wore it to biology lab and some kid sprayed dye all over it. waah. Imagine my delight to find it featured on somebody's ebay store. And one left in my size! Hey 1 in my mom's size too, let's get one for her as well. Send payment. Get email saying, "oh i'm sorry i don't have those sizes anymore I have different style" huh? NO send my money back. Still waiting for my refund.

I'm going to try a last minute bid on these jeans (that nobody has bid on yet auction ending in 30 minutes) if I don't get it I think I am permanently done with ebay.

    *whew* thanks.

Ouch....you are running into some bad luck....dont be scared to leave some really bad negative feedback(you can always take it back later)....that usually scares "real" sellers right away into giving you your moeny back.

I've always had pretty good ebay experiences...ill send some of my good ebay luck to ya

I am so addicted to eBay !
LSM,you have to be a last second bidder if you really want to WIN ! I used to bid like a normal person until shit kept getting swiped from me at the last few seconds of the auction.

yes, that is what I've noticed. The good stuff gets swiped at the very last second. As I was placing my last minute bid (with 45 seconds to go) somebody placed a bid 30 seconds after me. haha on them I was the higher bidder and they didn't have time to keep bidding so I won. yay! It was sooooo funny because my heart really was racing! I was all over excited thinking "oh no you don't" but I still won. I feel giddy.

btw, for those of you interested in what I won I got myself a pair of Earl jeans for $20.50 SIZE 28 (yes, I've gone from size 24/25 to 28 in a matter of 3 months. )

I dont see it being so hard to do....

I always figure out what the most I would spend on the item and still be happy with the purchase. I bid that amount and i walk away.

Sure the seller could use a fake name and drive up the price....BUT...ive already put in a price thats my "limit" of acceptability...so if I dont win...then I know someone paid more than I wouldve wanted to....and if I do win...whatever the price i know its what im happy with.

    Thats just how i do.

well I seem to recall hearing about some ebay seller(s) who were court ordered to pay so many thousands of dollars to ebay members. Apparently he (they?) were unscrupulously driving up bids. I don't know how or really any details but I swear I heard that on the news several weeks ago.

I think there are programs out there that automatically bid for you. IIRC, the way it works is, you place the maximum amount you're willing to spend on an item into the software. The software than continually checks Ebay for the item you want, and when it comes down to close to the end of an auction, the software bids .01 more than the highest bid, as long as it's not over your pre-set limit. I can't think of the name of this program though...

Exactly what Mr Hyde said. There are quite a few "sniping" programs available all over the internet. I even downloaded one after being frustrated at losing an auction that I was winning for the whole 7 days until the last minute--literally the last minute. I'm still to this day, ticked off about it. LOL. It was a set of 30 Disney movies, all originals, like-new condition for THIRTY dollars! Grrrr!

The program I downloaded after that was called "SnipeMonkey". You set it up with the absolute highest amount that you're willing to bid for that item. It also strikes with only 8 seconds left in the auction, so that no other bidder will have time to bid more than you, and steal the auction, pretty much. I use it now when there is something I really really really want, and if the price is right.

What A said too, is another thing that happens. Sellers create fake accounts and bid on their auctions, to jack-up the price (and also to make their auctions look more "popular") That tactic is just seems ridiculous to me, and although they think that eBay won't find out, they do track things like that.

    The sniper strikes again!!!!!!
Always bid at the last second, and only bid what you want to spend.Never get into a bidding war for anything!!Most times, that same item will be on ebay again soon.
You do have buyer protections from ebay.Links can be found in your "my Ebay"page when on ebay.
If you pay via paypal, paypal has money back gurantees.

Its a pain in the butt to fill out the forms, and some sellers bank on that.Dont let them get away with stealing from you.

You can get your money back, just fill out the forms.

I have an ebay store and dont mind helping you get past this.If you get stuck, shoot me an email and i can help.
Ebay is alot of fun for sellers and bidders, dont let a few bad apples spoil it for you.

    Best of luck.

I have taken part in hundreds of auctions at Ebay. I have only had two bad experiences. One was my fault for shipping the wrong thing and the other was due to a poor seller who sold broken items.

The key is to decide exactly how much you want to pay for an item...1 cent more and it's not worth it. That's the hardest point. Ask yourself, well would I still want it for $0.05 more? If yes, then you have to up your maximum bid. Think if it goes for this price I want it. If it goes for more, than the other person wanted it more than I did.

When you have your price ready, either give it to Ebay or a sniping service (note, service not software). Ebay will only bid the minimum you need to win, not your full maximum - you can trust their system. You'll only lose if someone bids higher than you. BUT, if you bid too early, somebody may start a bidding war with you. In that case, a sniping service can be useful. Sniping software can fail as it depends on your computer and connection - which for some isn't dependable. A sniping service on the otherhand has machines dedicated to sniping only. There are several out there that offer free trials/credit and have very low fees. Check 'em out.
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

thanks for the info everybody I had no idea there were sniping programs and services available. I was totally flabbergasted that somebody sniped an item from me with only 3 seconds left! What the hell? I said to myself. Is there really somebody sitting in front of their computer refreshing the screen waiting for the last possible second? Do they have a friggin stopwatch?

So even though that's what I practically did to win these jeans (*snicker*) I'm happy to hear that's not what I have to do every time in order to win. *whew*

I used to Ebay alot several years ago but quit because I really was getting out of control. I only just now started again. Thanks again.

oh yeah and an update for you. I got a package delivered today from that other seller. One of the shirts arrived. The XL I ordered for my mom. But the dude clearly told me via email that those tops weren't available and my refund was in the mail. No word on the 2nd shirt yet.

No, you cannot take back negative (or any) feedback. Once it's posted, it's permanent. The other party can post a followup comment as rebuttal. So use negative, or even neutral, feedback sparingly as a last resort after resolution via e-mail fails.

    Yeah, pretty much.

Sellers bidding on their own or a friend's auctions is known as "shilling". It's a fairly horrible problem which eBay stoutly maintains doesn't exist on its site. Yeah. Sure. The best protection from a shill bidder is the sniper. Sniping also ensures the best going price for the buyer. Besides... it's fun.

Glad you got it Sapphire. I use ebay quite a bit too and I know it's soooo annoying to lose an auction in the last few seconds. On ebay nothing is guaranteed until it is really over. Oh my other ebay complant is sellers charging ridicous amounts for shipping- I looked yesterday I found a costume I really liked with a starting bid of $.99 but the shipping was $299. Overall though ebay is cheaper than the costume lady in my club.
That's interesting to know about the sniping programs but I don't know if I would get one since it drives me crazy when it happens to me.

OMG S&H for $299. I've found you really need to read the fine print in those ads.

Shilling. I didn't know that term. Hell yeah it's fun. LIke I said, my heart was beating like a big bass drum. :-)

Actually, Paypal does not provide you with as much protection as they would like you to believe. I won an auction for a "brand new, never worn " baseball jersey. X-mas gift for my bro. It arrived filthy, stained, no tags, and had obviuosly been thru the washing machine! (The lettering had bled) I filed a complaint w/ paypal first, they informed me that they did not care about the misrepresentation about the condition of the item, as long as I recieved it. Lesson: next time, tell paypal I did not get it. I have also filed complaints with ebay, and square trade, day 3 and no response from either!

By the way, the seller's name is 'mootown', if anyone's shopping for jerseys on ebay!
