    Default getting blood taken

Who here hates getting blood taken? ever fainted?

I had this horrendous nurse yesterday at the tampa outpatient facility taking my blood and poked me no less then 6 times. Then when she finally got blood, she left the butterfly in for 2-3 minutes saying the flow was slow.

Never had a problem before and my mom draws my blood all the time because she enjoys running tests, ect on me.

Err, and now im all bruised up for surgery tomorrow.

Since I've started interning here at the hospital for my classes, I have to take blood daily from people. I can't stand the sight of it....Needles freak me out. I have managed to faint 3 times.

I particulary liked being stabbed and seeing MY blood being pumped into a tiny vile....very gross to watch.
6 times damn thats a lil excessive. I would have asked for someone else to watch her or get someone else to do it.

tiger, yes i was about to do that. But i didnt want to offend her. She was nice but i could tell she was really not experienced..

But next time i will make sure they know what they are doing before they "poke me"

Ugh, i'm actually gonna have blood work this Saturday morning. I hate needles, such a chicken. I also get very dizzy after it's taken, I have to lay down right after it. lol

My friend who is a premed student and used to draw blood said when she was training she was required to tell people she was training and did they want another person to do it. Some people though just suck at it I guess. I gave blood once a few years ago and the girl poked and poked and then told me I moved when the needle wouldn't go in. My friend giving blood next to me said I never moved. It hurt like hell when she TRIED to get the needle in but when the older lady came and retried on my other arm it didn't hurt half as bad and went right in. Then afterwards walking to my office I almost passed out getting on the elevator. I've never even contemplated giving blood again. Now I actually don't even weigh enough. As far as having a little blood drawn though I've never had it be that bad.

I ALWAYS pass out when I have my blood drawn. It's obviously psychological...I mean, I don't freak out when I get my period, and I was never squeamish about dissecting frogs or fetal pigs in school, so, I don't get it.

Two summers ago, I stabbed myself in the thumb with a screwdriver (don't ask) and ran across the room spurting blood, then I passed out on the bathroom floor. When I woke up, it looked like a crime scene, with a trail of blood drops leading to the bathroom. Fortunately I didn't need stitches.

I hate needles and used to have a mini nervous breakdown at the sight of them. Now as long as I dont see them poking me I am cool, I figure if I can stand Botox injections around my skull, I can handle anything now. Also the veins in my arms are next to impossible to hit so they use the veins on the top of my hands now, no repeated poking to find the vein.

Hmmm don't mind it never did. A little trick to help you along with the "pokers," Make a fist while she/he is preparing a few times in the arm you're giving blood, and yes you have a say which arm, they just want a good vein, keep pumping a stong fist a few times more, than slap the inside of you're arm were the needle will probably go. Slap it about 5 or 6 times, this will pop it righ up, they say if they don't pop from that slapping or the arm strap you may be slightly dehydrated.

My ex-boyfriend freaked out and fainted at the sight of blood. I thought it was funny- he worked at a hospital!
I had the pleasure of getting "popped" in the crook of my arm by a nurse's aid on Puerto Rico....I had an evil bruise for two weeks.

I got stuck yesterday in the hospital. They had to hook me up to an IV I warned the nurse in advance that i was a baby with needles, and not to tell me when she was going to stick me. I think she was the only person to ever hook me up to an IV in my through my wrist area and i barely felt it. Another woman had to take my blood sugar and i gave her the same warning and yet again another good nurse who took it from the side of my finger instead of the tip. Yesterday was my lucky day

that just made me remember that after my nose job I had to have a few injections with the world's longest needle into my nose to reduce the swelling in the tip.

I must say, I'm getting queesy and light-headed even reading this thread. I HATEHATEHATE needles so much! When I was a kid I used to destroy the phlebotomy room fighting and would have to be held down for shots or bloodwork.

I had to have bloodwork a few weeks ago and begn weeping like a child in front of everyone......
