Default Question about maximum heart rate?

Hmmm I was wondering about working out at your maximum heart rate; I workout at my max for longer than 5 min at a time and it feels like I am doing a great workout. But, when I was in nutrition class today my teacher said that working out at your max is kind of dangerous. My max is 200 and I workout at about 185 almost the whole time of about 30 minutes or so?
Does anyone know what heart rate should should I workout at in order to not hurt myself and get results?

You're target heart reat zone goes by age. The older you get the lower you should keep it. You can google the "target heart rate zone" for you're age, and how long to keep the heart rate up there.

Many good books on exercise talk about this, along with rise in blood pressure and sweating.

Ah i re-read you're posting. Actually you should always consult with a doctor before keeping you're heart rate at 200bpm for 30 minutes, or 185. I would.
Just to be on the safe side. That's high, but good if you have a healthy heart, and we don't know we do until we get a stress test. This is how i found out i have a heart condition, and i take medication everyday for life.

I believe you should never go above 85% of your max, which would be 170. Also keep in mind that if your want weight loss results your heart rate must be significantly lower.

Well, Ive read several things about how if you sustain your cardio at 30mins working no more than 85% of your maximum heart rate then it can be dangerous. Also, working like that you stop burning fat at one point and burn carbohydrates and all your glycogen too. I could be wrong? So, instead of loosing fat your are loosing all the other stuff. But, OTOH if your heart rate is too low then you are not doing anything but sweating.
I workout to see results sheesh LOL!

Got it hun! You need to get into you're proper heart zone for burning fat, stay for a shorter duration it seems.

    AND SWEAT!!!!!

Hmmm... sounds pretty good to me.
So more sweat will produce more results?

For weight loss your heart rate should be closer to 50% of the max, I believe. I'm not sure of the exact numbers but I do know that it is less than the "cardio" rate (around 85%).

The best results that I've ever had with weight loss is utilizing interval cardio. You make your heart rate max out for 2 minutes and then cool down a bit and then up it again...

    1. Warm up the first 2 minutes at Intensity Level 5
    2. Minutes 2-3 move from Intensity Level 5 to 6
    3. Minutes 2-6, 6-10 and 10-14 work your way from Intensity Level 6 to Level 9, maintain for one minute.
    4. Minutes 15-19 work your way from Intensity Level 6 to Level 10 (High Point at Level 10), maintain for one minute.
    5. Minute 20 cool down to Intensity Level 5 for one minute.

I love Body-for-Life...it works great and I see results quickly...here is the website if you are interested:

This sounds like my stress test all over again!!! Lol, i have a couple of "minor" they say heart conditions, and we did these steps above pretty much. But, everyone is different. I was told by my cardiologist if you have a heart condition of any sort, even previous heart attacks, to keep the target heart rate zone up in the proper zone for you're age for very short periods of time 10 max..

If you have not had a heart attack or any other heart condition, you can go up to 20 minutes safely. Again consult with you're doctor. Granted we are not Lance Armstrong, but he went at his highest heart rate zone for an extended length of time, but not to lose weight....To be the fastest, so there is a difference. My doc. said to lose weight, i do want to keep my heart heart up for close to 10 minutes as long as i can talk while doing this, i am fine, and will burn off calories.

Don't know, seemed to work for me before, but again i am on medication for my heart, and i think he keeps me in the "safe zone" if nothing else! Lol.

Thanks Hardkandee, Venus and Pamela!! Great posts very helpful!! So, there is really no need to work out in your upper heart rate zone (ie 85% +). It will just tire you out and make you work too hard for the same results.

Thought I would put my two cents in.

I go hard out for 20mins (160-170bpm). This deletes all you stored glycogen and then just cruse for 40min to 60min (110-120bpm). I works!!!

You also have to remember that hard work is the key. Nothing comes for free!
