    Default No-call list

I got an e-mail that cell numbers would be available to telemarketers as of 1/1/2005 and that the numbers needed to be registered on the do-not-call list as of 12/15/04 to avoid that.

Who knows if it's right. But regardless, evidently, you can register at - I hope I did the right thing.

Wow does not leave us much time does it. I will check out the site, but also, if it's a number i don't know, i wont answer, and i have voice mail if it's very important. Does not leave much room for TM does it on cell phones. Shit this does not seem fair.....Cell phones? What gives?

Yeah, I had to sign up for that with my house phone and cell phone. I don't mind if they spam my e-mail with that crap but calling at 4 am, Heck No!

    It sucks though, Pamela.

That is the right web site, I cross checked against my records from registering land line and cell when the site was fairly new last January.

For what it's worth, the last thing I had seen about this, i sort of remember it was just going to be a directory assistance type of thing, but not "published" or distributed like regular phone numbers are. If I can find any links tomorrow I'll try. And at that point, Verizon was not planning to participate in the project, so Verizon cell numbers would not be available.

OH hell no! That sucks the big one really. I leave my cell on 24/7 for any emergency from family or friends. But Cali is 3 hours behind, so at 9:00pm for them it's friggin 12:00am here.....Give me a friggin break. I did register the house numbers gosh a year or so ago was it? And i have a work line here, but some still get though....NOt on my cell, i swear this will not be good.

Chalk this one up to the law of unintended consequences. Some bozo decided that it would be great if everyone could keep the same phone number no matter who the provider is. That was not true in the old days when there were exchanges that were exclusively for cell phones. Now no one can know based on the number if it is a cell phone or a landline. (This "benefit" cost you a buck or so a month whether you want it or not to a FCC slush fund.) The no call list is up and working at

PS I had added my cell the first day I could sign up for this as a backup.

Ok, I guess I'd better step in here to put an end to the confusion. Pan dah is correct that it is only a directory and not a list that will be distributed or printed. Furthermore, it is voluntary! The only numbers that will be on it are the people who request to have their numbers listed, so calm yourselves down! Also, no telemarketer will call you at 4am... they can only call you between 8am and 9pm in your time zone. Lastly, most telamerketers use a computer auto-dialer. It is illegal for them to call a cell phone using an auto-dialer because this is costing the cell phone users money. If this happens, simply inform them that this is a cell phone and to remove the number from their list. They are required to do so by law. Or you could just go the quick and easy route and register with the federal do-not-call list. There is a small loophole for them, however, that you should be aware of: many online constests and surveys have little fine print at the bottom that basically says that by entering, or responding, you are giving your permission for them or any of their affiliates to call you. The law says that if you're registered on the do-not-call list, telemarketers cannot call you unless they have a a pre-established business relationship with you or have your permission.
