I am wondering what charities everyone here donates to. I like Plan USA childreach program, and I usually donate to my local zoo, children's library, and regular library. I'm looking to spread my charity fund out to more organizations though and wanted to know what all of your favorites are.

I am a big fan of animal charities. Justsaywhoa.org, (to stop horse slaughter), barntowire.com, horsekillers.com (same thing, diff. site). I just donated 3 pieces of furniture to Salv. Army. I also donate clothes, household items to Juvenile Diabetes. I don't know if there's another site, but in Montana, they're talking slaughter of the wild horses that roam free. Horrible!

March Of Dimes ~ I can't describe how much they helped me and my family, both emotionally and financially when I was younger, born with Hydrocephalus (Water on the Brain). They are absolute angels, and I give to them regularly.

Multiple Sclerosis Society (RI Chapter) ~ Because of course, My Mother has had the disease since she was 16. She was the youngest reported case back then, and they hardly knew anything about it. They still don't know enough. She's been bedridden for the past 12 years, paralyzed from the waist down, and is legally blind from the disease.

St. Jude's ~ Children should never have to suffer.

ASPCA & Local Shelters ~ I help with monetary contributions, but also food, blankets, and even old stuffed animals for the puppies to snuggle up with.

I've also in the past, made little tiny hats for newborns at the hospital. This past year I haven't, and hopefully I'll be able to pick that back up again when work slows down.

Local AIDS charities: Life Foundation, Maui AIDS Foundation & Kauai AIDS Project. I participated in their Paradise Ride this past June and will do so again.

Lance Armstrong Foundation. I lost my mother to ovarian cancer in 1992. I plan on traveling to Texas in October to particiapte in their Ride for the Roses. If I cant get to Texas in October, I will do my own ride around the island of Oahu. The Texas ride is 100 miles. A ride around Oahu is 130 miles.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I'm going to join their fundraising cycling team in January.

American Diabetes Association. My father has diabetes. I rode in the Tour de Cure last month and will do so again next year.

I had been very discouraged with my lack of fundraising success with these organisations, however my dad reminded me that my problems do not compare with the suffering of those people afflicted with cancer, AIDS or diabetes and he encouraged me to keep going. He says I will get better at fundraising if I keep at it and learn how to do it better.

I have been avoiding this thread but to answer the question: ummmm, ME. Don't they always say you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else?

But seriously, before anyone thinks I'm a total selfish bitch, I've donated lots of time to a Women's shelter in the past as well as Boys and Girls Club, random food drives (besides holidays, people gotta eat the rest of the year too) and donate occasionally to child abuse advocacy services. I think those are often overlooked in favor of the big name charities.

    >>Added: Oh yeah, I donate old clothes and stuff to Goodwill or Salvation Army, or to local Women's Shelter. I prefer to give it to the Women's Shelter since the women who wind up there often arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs and kids to take care of.

aspca is my number one donation. I also donate to the humane society here.

i did a 100 mile hike for kids with cancer years ago, and raised money several times.

I think im going to start donating the aids charities as well. I did a presention speech on AIDS not too long ago. Such a scary virus.

I donate tons of clothes/furniture to the salvation army. Also worked at soup kitchens.

I don't donate to charities that I don't have some kind of experience with. I think way too many of the big name charities don't use the money that they get the way we think they do. For example, if you donate to the national CASA office, they only share a very little of that money with a very few of the local CASA programs. They say that they use a lot of the money for the annual CASA Conference, but CASA volunteers who attend the conference still have to pay a ridiculous amount. So I'm a big advocate of finding a local cause and donating to it directly.

    I donate to...

The local CASA program, Covenant House, Wetlands Conservatory, the local Woman's Shelter, and of course ME. :-)

    Lena

PS. If anyone wants to donate to my local CASA, PM me for the address... *hint*

Monthly ($) Donations to World Wildlife Fund and Australian Bush Heritage Fund. I also find myself donating ($) to the Australian Conservation Foundation regular enough as well.

Extra funds at the end of the year (as I set aside a percentage of my weekly earnings to donate) will get spread out to Wildcare (as I eventually want to work with this organisation as a carer for injured native wildlife), Animal Welfare League of Queensland (forever grateful for them for giving me the gift of my 11 yr old cat, Bibs) and then various other environment and/or animal focused charities.

I'm with onlythebest and DeepGreen -- I rather help the animals than the humans.

If I can't sell something on ebay I will generally donate it to the local Animal Welfare League Op shop... I've also bought a few items from there as well.

My ultimate goal is to have enough passive income so I will be able to live on a property that is large enough for me to become a carer for Wildcare (wombats, fruit bats/flying foxes, birds, ducks, etc) whilst also having a nice assortment of cats and dogs (I'll have cat runs and a big enough area set aside for the dogs to frollick in that is caged off so it won't hurt the native wildlife that I'm re-habilitating/caring for..). Then one or two days a week I will also work at the Animal Welfare League of Queensland shelter.

I wish I had lots of money just to give to St Jude's, but I dont..if I ever do make a crapload of money, I would probably give it all to them. I know if my little girl was sick I would want someone to do the same for me. I agree, children and babies should never have to suffer.

American Cancer Society. Sentimental reason. Many years ago, they really delivered for someone special in a losing cause. Can't forget it.

Here's a tip in re: donating. "Tax" yourself a certain percentage of your weekly (or even nightly if you are up to it) earnings. I personally stick to around the 5% mark. I also have an ING Direct Savings Maximiser account where I put in my donation money if I happen to not donate to any particular cause that week.

Then, at the end of the year, I choose a few charites and divide up the $$ in that ING Direct account (set aside for donation money only - I'm strict on myself with not using it for anything else) amongst them.

American Cancer Society (mother), and then stuff that really affects kids like American Diabetes, and Muscular Dystrophy, and Firefighters Fund, and then the odd ones that pop up here and there. I like the idea of planning it, but I am way to disorganized for that to ever work, so I do one-time, yearly. it works for me....

my friend's sister's dog was put down yesterday due to cancer... it sure seems like it's getting worse everywhere, and I hope and pray they find a cure or make some major progress with that MF.

You guys are all so great! Does anyone know of a charity for helping older people? Kids are pretty well taken care of by everyone, but the old people are usually forgotten.
