    Default Licensed Massage Therapy

Is anyone here a licensed masseuse? NOT talking about jack shack. How much did you pay, length of training course....what do you need to work at a physical therapist's office? What kind of money do you make? Thank you in advance....

Well, I think my niece did. I don't remember what she paid. I think it was like a 2 yr. course. she ended up not doing it cause of carpal tunel. This is in Il, but try lightworks.com. 's a new age periodical, i don't know if ads appear online, but they had a place in there (massage school) it's supposed to be good. If I find it around, (after the mess of moving my mom), I'll post school site.

There is a man who talked about massage in "Body Business." Go there and maybe send him a pm about massage. He does massage for a living.

girl i know is doing it now. She took a 100 hr course ibn cali and it was of little use, so she has signed up for a 1000hr nationally certified course. There is a really good place in Lenox MA, but you prolly should be in yoga in a big way if you go there. She found a place with accred. inst. that costs like $50 per course.

Most people take a year, it can be done in 6mo. Then the pay is like 60-80 for the house plus tips. I think it varies what the house takes but anthing more than 50% is rediculous.

she also did BR in clubs, and hey charged like 10/song, and in another club this this girl told me she was paying the house half. my lady was paying $3 per... so 30%, which seems pretty fair. At the first club 50% the girl was required to carry a book around and get signatures for waiver and she would be wise to somehow work it out so that it becomes supervised and the hours go towards her license. my lady was not recording anything and just did for the cash, whe has another journal for the hours she records at her spa, where she is working while going to school.

The really weird thing is that the hours vary so widely in different towns and the all have like local requirements, so she could work two towns over, but not in my town. most of the reputable ones require a certificate for proof of training. The hours for local ordinances can vary from like 100 hours to the full 1000.

    hope that helps....

Looks like California has no regulations regarding licensing of massage therapy. Other states require 500 hours of training and up to 1,000.

I got the info from the "California Institute of the Healing Arts and Sciences." It looks like it costs, at that place, anywhere from $1,300 to $10,000, depending on the level of training wanted.

The massage therapists I've known have gone out to the world after anywhere from two months of training to an associate's degree.

Thanks for all the helpful info. I'd prefer to not have to do anything sexual, period....My interest came from my back problems and seeing different kinds of massage/ massuses in different parts of the world (Asian back-walkers, kooky NorCal expats, Rolfing, back massage with clothing left on.)
I get irritated when people think the only reason a young woman would learn massage is to cater to pervs who want BR or HR.....it's not my problem how people react to touching. He can take his woody home with him.

An alternative you may want to check into is some of the different forms of massage... I personally was trained to do Shiatsu, which is an oriental form of massage and is done with the clothes on.

To give you a general idea of what it entails/how much you make, etc... I went to school full time for one year, that is pretty much the standard for any decent massage license. The cirruculum was 1000hrs, a lot of the legislature that is going through now is pushing for a standardized 1000hrs for all states, but you can check with your local gov't to find out what the requirements are in your state.

I paid $4000 for my entire program, with another $1500 or so for equipment, ie: massage chair, travel futon, queen sized futon for an office, and basic supplies like cleanser for the chair, linen for the futons, etc. All of which I was able to claim on my taxes since I had a business license.

When I first got out of school I went in with another therapist and we opened up our own office. Rent was $400 a month for each of us, and for about 2 years neither one of us had any problems making enough to cover it. I would charge anywhere from $45 to $60 for a massage, which usually lasted about an hour and 20 min or so. I also did chair massage for a dollar a minute and spot treatments for back/neck/whatever for $25 for 20 minutes. Allyn (the other person in the office) did traditional massage at $50 for an hour, $30 for 15 min, and she also did hot river stone massages for $80.

Unfortunately right after 9/11 things pretty much ground to a halt and business just died off. We let the office lease run out and now I freelance and Allyn works in a spa.

It's good money if you can get a regular clientele going. At the peak I was prolly bringing home about 800/week, now that I'm not actively pursuing it, I've prolly only made about $400 this year. My recommendation would be if you are interested, check with the salons/spas in your area and see how they pay their therapists. Some places only pay you $14-16 an hour and they get the actual fee from the client, some will take anywhere from 20-70% of the fee and you get the rest, some charge room fees, some don't. It really can vary a lot from place to place.

Oh, and yeah, you will get a LOT of calls from guys who think that it's just a front for prostitution or something... asking you to come to their hotel room at 11 at night, shit like that. But almost every state has a full background check by the police as part of the application process for a license. And if you plan on moving out of state, you may want to check the regs in the state you are going to, I can work pretty much anywhere in AZ, but I couldn't work in CA unless I worked under another therapist for a certain number of hours as a trainee... :-/

If you have any other questions or want more details, just PM me and I'll try to give you the best info I can.

hey your in california, and i couldn't think of the school that my lady had gone to but i was talking with her a few minutes ago and found out. Here is a link:

She said that school was awesome and she paid quite a few bucks for it, but it was were she got her start.

The school is going to now is alot cheeper. she is almost at 1000 hours and she said that she has paid for this most recent school, about 3500. There are a couple of other really well know schools near here that she looked into and they started at over the 5K level like from 6500 to 10K. hope that helps

Shiatsu! I had one of those in maui before flying back and was hooked - it is my most favorite massage. I recently had Reikki, which was done for some pain in my upper spine from a bike accident. Afterwards, I was able to swim across a lake with no discomfort - and i was taking about 10 or more excedrine a day at that time. This was at a music festival and was done by a catholic priest, and i think it takes a certain continuity within to do Reikki since you can almost look at it like "healing with hands".... Shiatsu rox!

    hi madmaxine,
i'm actually going to a massage therapy school next year, after i graduate from college. the tuition is going to be $4000 for the program, which is a year long, and then i will need to take the state exam and the national exam once that is over to become licensed. this isn't for any type of sexual massaging (my parents and all my friends know that i'm doing this, and they don't know i've been paying for college by dancing), it's for theraputic healing. here is a website that i found that can answer your questions about individual state regulations and provide a resource for getting information from different schools. be carefull when you look at schools though, b/c some advertise that the school is only a few weeks long, but then when you finish it you don't have the necessary training or hours to become a licensed massuse, so just double check that.

i hope this helps, and definitally let me know if you decide to go into this. take care,
