    Default Babysitter Cost/

Hi, all. I'm new to this topic, I was wondering what you all pay for a babysitter. Saw on bulletin board of grocery, an ad for college student. She's asking $10.00 - 12.00 an hr., w/3 - 4 hr. minimum. thought that was a lil' high. I will be looking in local paper too, but I thought of asking, here, just to see "what's what". Thanks.

I use daycare, and you don't want to know the prices of that.....

But I've used babysitters and they were 10-13 bucks an hour.

What about family? Any responsible young people in your family need cash? My mom used to pay my cousin to babysit me when I was lil about 8-10 and hour. More for overnite. :/ hope that helps?

Holy Crap! $10-$12 an hour for a babysitter these days? AND they require a minimum amount of hours? LOL

::Creeps up in her walker:: I remember when I was around 12 or 13 and did babysitting for a couple years, I charged a whole $2 an hour. They've come a long way, I guess. Oy vey.

I definitely would suggest daycare, if you can find one that's reasonably priced. Most are outrageous though. I've never used daycare or babysitters for my kids, always family. For me, it's a matter of trust though. People are so different after you close that door, so I've always been cautious.

On the other hand, when I did daycare at my house, I watched 2 kids, and charged $75 a week for each. That was extremely reasonable in my opinion. I don't know of anyone (especially around here) that charges less that $150 a week. Ridiculous.

That 10-15 dollar an hour range is for a PROFESSIONAL babysitter that only helps out once in a while. That's pretty much the cost if you check in the yellow pages. That is not the cost that your average single mother pays in order to go to work. most day cares are significantly cheaper than $12 an hour. I paid an average of $25 a pop for when I went to work (9pm-2am)

Heheheh, there's one dancer at my work that pays 20/night weeknight and 30/night weekend [night starts at 5:30pm] and expects the sitter to stay overnight, even after she get home from work. I think that is waaay too cheap.
I last babysat, oohh, five years ago and the most I ever got paid was $8/hour, and that was pretty unheard of - normally was $4-5.

The daycares around here run about $325/week. There's a minimum of 2 full days (no half days for less price).

I wouldn't pay $10-12 dollars an hour for anyone. There are several teenage girls around here that I trust and they only charge $5/hour. No more for overnights since they do less work. It's easy money for them.

Makes me even more glad that I have an SO who watches her when I am not going to be around.

You can definitely find a local teen who will do a responsible job for a reasonable price. Teens always want money....put a "wanted" ad out and be negotiable. Good luck!

seriously. In my case, my child was already in bed before I even went to work. Although, I don't think I would have been comfortable with a complete stranger babysitting. I was lucky in that I had a circle of trusted friends who were willing to help me out.

Thanks. I should add, it's for my mom. She's ok, she doesn't need any special care, nurse credentialed person, etc. Just don't want to leave her alone, & it can be difficult & time consuming to take her with. I would need some nights, if I go outfit-selling. There is an adult daycare, (w/LPN present) they charge like 55 for 7 hrs, w/a meal, But, if you're late picking up (after 6pm, they charge you by the MINUTE, for overtime). They have 1/2 day rates, but if you go over that, they charge for the whole day. It's more hrs than I need, so I don't use them too much.

I'd say $8-10 is pretty standard from all the posters I've seen (though I don't have kids). I'd see what kind of experience they have before paying that though; CPR and knowing what they're doing will probably cost you extra. You have to remember, they'll probably take what they can get, so call em up and bargain with them. If they don't have to change any dipers, use that to your advantage when bargaining too.
