Default Car Alarm Systems for Classic Vehicles?

I'd like to purchase a late Sixties-early Seventies musclecar, but live in an area where car theft rates are ridiculous. Seeing as the doors would be pre-electronic, what theft-deterrent and alarm systems work best for older vehicles? (Other than bolting on a gunrack and looking like a low-class disturbed f*ck.)

There are alot of good car alarms on the market. I would recommend most of the Directed products (Viper, Hornet, etc.). You can add door locks to a classic car without cutting it up and the possibilities of what it takes to trigger the alarm and how it lets you know when it is going off are constantly growing. This is what I do for a day job and have been doing it since 1986. I ahce done alot of classic cars here in VA (mostly 60's Thunderbirds and Mustangs) and have never had a problem afterward. If you need more details let me know, I'll be more than happy to do what I can here.

Best purchase for an expensive car is a GPS tracker chip. Some of these work as a cell phone so you can call your car and ask it where it is if you have a GPS enabled cell phone. (Not bad for Mall parking lots either)

Alarms that sense from the interior light switch on the doors work well and retain the most originality. Motion dectection is also good but Thunderstorms, High winds and "Jake Brakes" on big trucks will trigger them.

I have a 70 1/2 Z-28 and I have a custom alarm with door and starter triggers and GPS chips on the engine and chassis. It is sooo easy to break into pre-79 vehicles that most alarm systems designed for late model cars just don't work well on classics. Most custom alarm installers will work with you on keeping it original and "Out of Sight"

OO I car topic I can actually understand!!!

I have worked with installing and selling alarms. Please PLEASE go to someone who knows what theyre doing. Not just joe-schmo at best buy (no offense to best buy people but the installers are beginers IME). Ive had good experience with Clifford car alarms but DEI is the company in which that one comes from along with many many other brands. Note: do not buy Alpine alarms they suck and are hard for the installer to put in and hard to fix when they break.

Depending on the level of security you want the price will vary greatly from about 150 to 900+ (w/ install prices). Its always the alarm plus the price of install. Some people offer the alarm with the amount of install in it. Always check with a qualified salesperson or the installer because installation on all cars are different....always; not only for price but for extra parts, time, etc. So you get no surprises at the time of your install.

Picking out alarms can take time and frustrate you but some of this might make this easier. How much security do you want? The kind where the alarm is beaping you if something happens to your car or the kind where the car just beeps to shock pressure on the car. Would you like to protect not only the interior but under the hood parts and trunk parts.
Do you want automatic door locks? Most alarms have this function inside the "brain" and can be installed or not. Since your car will be an older model you might need actuators, dio isolated the doors or polarizing the locks to help make the doors become automatic. Newer models of cars will already have this done so they wont need extra work. Do you want shock/impact, glass, or proximity sensors? Shock/impact are similar but essentially do the same thing; they will alarm when someone bumps, hits, breaks the outside of the car. Glass sensors are good for when glass breaks. Proximity sensors are good for leaving your windows down and if someone were to place their hand past the window in the car or if a person were to get too close the alarm will go off. Sweet huh? Theres alot more to this than what Ive listed. It all depends on how much are you willing to protect your car.

This is hella long...if you have any more questions n stuff go ahead and PM me if you like.
BTW this is the link to DEI : http://www.directed.com/

LOL, leave the blueberries alone. Oh and you forgot all the strawberries at Circuit City. I agree they are fresh ( very little if any experience).

I would suggest NOT using your car for daily travel, but for special occasions traveling routes and stopping in places that you know already are safe. This is in addition to the most comprehensive system you can afford and using the GPS locator system. This will be expensive. But in Granola*, so is everything else.

    * Granola is my pet name for CA
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

threlayer- funny you should mention the "Granola" aspect of CA...I do admit this state is full of hippy-dippies, but there's also quite a bit of ghetto/ thugs out here.
I hope to drive my classic car while fixing it up- I used my 86 Camaro as a main vehicle and it ran well. Sadly, it would not have passed smog, so I am looking at smog-exempt vehicles. Frankly, a lot of the vehicles made today are puny & plastic-y. They get ripped off for parts too- can you believe people go out of their way to steal SATURNS? I think there was a whole episode of "The Sopranos" about a stolen Saturn. Crazy.

Excellent advice TigersMilk. I used to work for Crutchfield as a sales advisor for home/car audio/video, etc... and everything you said was right on the money.

Excellent article by them on car alarms which verifies some of what TigersMilk was saying about the different aspects you need to examine:

There are alot on the market. Go to you're local auto alarm store and purchase what you like. Because it's a classic car, makes no difference.

Better tip! Get "classic car insurance!" And, you want to be put on the plan that pays the full value of the car. Yep auto insurance sells this plan!

PS, hun if they really want the car, no matter what system is in it, they will take it.....Been there second car i owned. A 1971 Camaro, had LOUD alarm, took it anyway. Car was found days later in the woods, said it may have been used in a drive by shooting...

This is how i learned the best protection is to get the insurance, well worth the payments, even for dings, and scratches not only theft. Lots of jealous jerks out there. To own a nice car, and keep it in A shape cost money.
