    Default The word "Colored"....

There's a new secretary in my office (She's african american).....Everytime she leaves for something. My boss will come up to me and say the words,"I really like the new colored girl we hired"...."Do you think the colored girl will make the meeting?"....."Will you ask the colored girl to bring me coffee?"....

Maybe I am just being overly sensitive....But does that word bother anyone else?

It's not the current PC term, but it doesn't bother me, really. I wouldn't use it, and it's probably not a smart idea, but if this guy is older, it's probably just second nature and he doesn't even know it's offensive. Racial semantics are silly, IMO.

Yea i really don't get what he's saying. I work at a hospital and we use people in conversation by NAME. It works.

Only time we have to say colour is when there is a major probelm going down, colour, clothes etc all gets mentioned.

That would annoy me if I hear someone talk like that. I would tell him something if I were you.

It doesn't really bother me if you're trying to describe someone's appearance... just like at a crime scene, you may describe him or her as white/black/colored/etc... but other than that, it does slightly annoy me. If it's your boss, he should be using her name by now

I have said something but he claimed I was just being "Sensitive".....None of the other employees seem to be bothered by him saying it, or maybe they just aren't saying anything.

At least he'll stop saying it around me.

You should start talking in the same tone around the office...

"Is my boss in a meeting? you know, that white guy?"
"I'm sorry ma'am, but that white guy is not in the office right now. Can I take a message?"
"Have you seen that white guy around? He has an appointment soon"
"Whitey just hired another colored secretary"

He's 35.....So this isn't some,"Well, he's older...Older people say it" type thing. He knows her name, It's even sitting on her desk. If he can remember my last name, he can certainly remember hers.

He apologized for saying it around me though but I don't think he should say it period IMO.

You don't say,"Yo...White guy! Come ere".

We have four new workers in the office. He doesn't call any of those people "Whitey"....

But even the other african american workers we have aren't saying a peep. He says 'colored' around them, and they just look at him and smile.

I'd be ready to pounce on that man like Bill clinton on Monica.

If her name is sitting on her desk and he doesn't refer to by it then he sounds like he might be prejudice. That relly bothers me,It makes it seem like she's an attraction at the zoo or something.

That would piss me off, too. I don't think you're being sensitive. I had some guy say to me the other day-This club is getting awfully dark. Of course, I'm all looking around like a moron. Huh? It looks as lit as usual. Then I realized what he meant. I just had to walk away. I hate it when people think that because you're "white" that you belong to their little 'caucasians who disrespect other races' group. Ew.

Have you asked any of the other employees if it bothers them? Maybedon't feel they can speak up aroudn him or something?

Yeah, I've asked other employees and they said it was just how he is. I think they are afraid to speak up out of fear of losing their job.

    I don't care if it's just him, I really don't like it.

My boss thinks I am just being overly sensitive.

Hell, i used to have a boss that would refer to black people as "The Monkeys."

Needless to say, with my big mouth, i didn't last very long at that one. It really doesn't take long for that shit to get to me, and ya know i'll say something.

I thought the term "colored" went out of common usage in the early 70s even in the deep South. It could be worse, the guy could have referred to them in less flaterring terms. Is this guy older? Sounds like a relic from days past. If this was occuring up here, he'd have some 'splaining ta do.

    ^ Nah, He's only 35.

It could be worse, yes. He's landed a job in New york, so he'll be leaving in two months.

    Thank God.

Well this sucka is in a world of hurt if he calls anyone non-caucasian in New York "colored." I could almost imagine the headline: "Man lynched for being racially insensitive to subordinates," film at 11:00. As much as I hate how PC we've become, there's no place for backwards thinkers. And for the record, there are some places that this train of thought still exists around the country.

i grew up in the mountains of NC, and all the older people. maybe 50 and up, use that word. i haven't heard anyone say it here at the beach.

if he learned to say it from his parents, he probably won't quit.

I once had a boss that would smile and flirt with the black girls that worked for him. I think he felt like black girls were sluttier or something. One day, when it was just me, him and a non-black girl working, he said the "n" word...a few times! I was shocked. He didn't realize that I'm mixed and that I would be offended by that, shit I think the other girl was even uncomfortable and she wasn't black at all. I didn't say anything to him, but I did tell the girls what kind of person he really is. He is an old man, maybe 60 or so. This guy was too racist for me, so I quit. I don't get offended when I hear "colored", but my black friends do. I think your boss was being insensitive and the black people there are too afraid to say something to him.

    Rose,

You weren't being overly sensitive at all. The usage of the word colored, when used in that context, is synonymous with the old school train of thought back in the day. Most generally like to leave where it belongs... in the past. Perhaps you could ensure your boss receives a Thesaurus for Christmas.

A_Guy, your whitey/colored comment almost made me fall out of my chair laughing.

As another poster stated, he should already be using her name by now. What kind of boss doesn't personalize?

In some circles usage of that word will garner a beatdown. For your boss's protection you might want to school him on that.
