Default You Need God...I'll Pray For You

Someone, please, explain to me why it is that some people feel that everyone NEEDS "God"? Why do I need God? Why am I incapable of being a good human being without "God"? What is it about my life, spirit, soul, heart, pancreas that is so horrible that I NEED GOD? And WHY do you feel the need to say it to me?

    EDIT:
Point of Clarification: I don't mind if YOU need God...but leave me the Hell alone about it.

Your child is sick, You give them medicine.

Some people believe "God" is the cure.

I don't believe that but I respect it.

I respect other people having a belief for themselves. But I don't try to talk anyone OUT of believing in God....so why do they feel a need to speak down to me as if I'm some sort of lost fucking leper who's destined to Hell? (wanna guess what my BIGGEST pet peev is????)

The real question is where does anyone get off telling me what I need???

How many religious and nonreligious treatises do you want?

Some people need an emotional and/or philosophical anchor. Some don't.

Some people feel you cannot live a complete life without faith of the Almighty in their version of the Truth, which version states that in order to live a full and complete life, you need that faith.

Obviously, people don't need belief in God to live, since many people have lived fully and happy lives not believing in God (and have lived those lives also believing in God). For that matter, people have lived fully and happy lives believing in things that are patently wrong.

I guess if people feel they need God, or their spouse, or their animist icon, or their star, or whatever, then they do. If they feel I need something, they need to let me need it on my own.

I don't know if that answers the question, because I don't know that the question is answerable.

Later edit, since this was written while other postings were going on: There are any number of people, even on this forum, who have tried to talk theists out of believing in God. You might as well ask, why do they need to do that? People look to proselytize their version of the "truth."

Ha. This reminds me of my neighbor.

She's a 70 year old, fundie, but a nice woman.

She knows I am not religious.....There's no questioning of her knowing. Yet every damn day I see her she comes up to me and says," I bet your life would be a lot better if you found God".....This morning as I was heading out towards my car....She comes outside, screams my name, and stops to tell me,".....Hell isn't a nice place. I think you need God in your life. Even if you are a good person, You're going to burn for the rest of your life. Do you want that?".....I smile, and nod.

But I have thoughts of beating up that woman.

So was it the Jehovahs, Mormons, or Southern Baptists that showed up on your doorstep? I've personally had all three stop by and try to convert me.

There was a thread quite a while back in here that inquired as to people's religious beliefs, and an atheist poster was as urgent in those views as any fundamentalist.

I agree that strident evangelists, whether for religion, or Amway, or animal rights, or atheism, or anything can be completely annoying people.

(I stand for tolerance! And I won't leave you alone until you do, too!)

I don't pay much attention to her. She rushes her American language so much, I rarely understand what she's saying anyways. I start speaking italian to her, and she spats off.

None....my post was inspired by another post on the site that implied that we all need God...and that annoyed me.

Mojo, you seem defensive. Realize these people are just trying to help. Misguided good intentions.
I'm just saying this to explain the notion of needing spirituality......life is full of twist and turns that are hard to understand without some sort of philosophy. I frequently recall little parables from the Bible that help me understand what people say and do. I'm really glad I had religion growing up.
In this country, we have the freedom to study and use different kinds of religions/ philosophies. So use the resources! You might find Voltaire worth "worshipping."
I don't care how this sounds, but frequently the people I see suffer the most and do stupid things in moments of desperation/ emergencies ARE the ones without any spiritual philosophy.

Defensive? No...not at all. I don't like anyone cramming beliefs down my throat...it's that simple.

Have you ever heard of fundies? They live off of pressing their beliefs down others throats.

People have the right to believe whatever they want to believe, and worship whomever.

How you walk down your road isn't the same as how someone else will.

I went to a religious school on the West Coast for my undergrad. I didn't exactly look the part (black leather jacket, dark clothes, somewhat unkempt hair and beard--hey, I was just out of the USAF, cut me some slack--and an ostensibly "nasty" brooding East Coast disposition), and some of my extracurricular activities with my former military friends caused concern amongst fellow students (Slayer shows, my Playboy collection, carousing and club hopping, overnight visiting ladyfriends, SCing, et al).

Frequently, their concern would manifest itself much as folks here have described. They'd approach me, as if a leper (I ain't no beauty to behold, ya know? ), and with complete sincerity, say, "I'll pray for you, CO."

At this point, I'd place my hand on their shoulder, smile and say, "Thank you. Because no one needs it more than me." Then I'd walk away. They didn't know what the hell to think.

But the kicker is, I wasn't kidding; I do need it more than anyone I know. I'll take my charity and divine advocacy wherever I can get it.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

It's a free country. People are allowed to say whatever they want within reason. And we are also free to ignore them. I may be religious but I don't go around saying that non-believers will be going to Hell.

Blech. I can't count how many times people have told me to "Find God". Sometimes I give them the old "Why? Is he lost?", or "Yeah, I'll find him just as soon as I find Waldo". Most times, I just shoot back with "Which God?" (I have many in my belief system, soooo.. They must be specific.

I have no problems with people saying they'll pray for me, etc.. Whatever, every little bit helps, but I'll never change my views or my beliefs to satisfy anyone else.
