Aaah, if anyone knows of this, I'd be interested as well, but I think a club like this only exists in 1983........ *sigh*

You're talking Burlesque. These ladies do stage shows, but will go topless at times.

Sweden has a few stage shows only clubs. But in the states, i don't know of any place. Only what Lena has said she heard of would be a place to check into perhaps.

Well, define "showgirl" a little more and perhaps I can help. I was engaged once to a line-captain and swing dancer in Jubilee years ago which is the largest showgirl/old vegas type show around I think. I also worked in entertainment in Vegas shows for a long time as well.

Most of the dancers in shows like that have degrees in dance and many of them come from very esteemed arts colleges such as Juilliard etc. Some of the smaller shows don't really care about your background, just if you can dance and typically they have open auditions every 6 months or so. You go, audition, and if you get the part, you're in. I will tell you this though, dancers don't get paid much and it's tremendously hard work. The woman I was with was a line captain meaning she was in charge of all the dancers in her dressing room (about 20) and also a swing dancer, meaning that when someone was sick or on vacation, she would take their part in the show. This meant that she had to learn over 20 different positions in the show. Even with all this responsibility in a major Vegas show, I think she only made about $33K a year and that was six years ago. Judging with inflation, I'd say the same spot doesn't pay a lot more than that. Just food for thought.

If you are in LA you can check out the PussyCat Dolls.

I understand there are some less know groups who do similar type shows but I do not know anyother names off hand.

Check out this link for the full article about the new trend in burlesque clubs.
    http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_ho.../25138975.html

I think that this new trend is fantastic. Legitimate business owners obviously don't "need" to charge their entertainers a fee to work. And of course, if you can get a job in one of these burlesque clubs, you won't have to compete w/ a bunch of fatty hookers to sell a dance, or be sexually harassed and insulted by a bunch of sleazy johns. I just hope that these nice clubs will help to take the sleaze factor out of the exotic dance industry.

Here are some excerpts from the article.
Forty Deuce at Mandalay Bay is the latest in a growing trend of burlesque clubs.
The recent Time magazine cover story on Las Vegas suggested the new striptease movement is merely a surrogate for the topless clubs on which casinos are so far too shy to bet their gaming licenses. Kane found the suggestion "slightly insulting." Topless dancers usually don't make it through five minutes of an audition, he says, and 65 percent of his club patrons are female.
(I did a little research and found out that Ivan Kane wants
his dancers to have professional training in ballet and jazz.)

    • Tangerine, the indoor-outdoor club at Treasure Island, rushed Kane's formula to town ahead of him by having a live jazz trio and bar-top dancers perform four times per night.
    • February brings the planned Caesars Palace opening of the Pussycat Doll Lounge, a "free-form cabaret" in part of the space once occupied by Caesars Magical Empire.
    • "The Vamps Girlie Revue" is a late-Sunday fixture at Risque in Paris Las Vegas. The revue staged by Michael Colby and Bart Doerfler's Wild Room Productions arrived in July of last year.
    • The Sahara counters the high prices and trendiness of the clubs with "Sweet Lillie's Cabaret," a free lounge show that's filled the Casbar Theatre Lounge for a quintet of women offering a 50-minute show.

Thanks for the info LNGU!! My BF and I are going to spend a few days in Vegas next month and we are DEFINATELY hitting one of those clubs.

I bellydanced for a burlesque show a few months ago and several of the burlesque dancers were also strippers. BUT, they were classy and danced appropriately to burlesque, NOT like in the club. Its not such a stretch though, but you should definately watch some of the old burlesque videos and research the dance style and music.

I am very interested in taking lessons in the future......even some modern american style bellydance has a burlesque origination...not that any of the snooty bellydancers will ever admit to it, haha!

Well, this warms the cockles of my heart, it's good to hear that maybe I'm a little jaded about the state of our industry. As much as I like dancing, I'm tired of, but resigned to the typical pay-to-work, hustle huts most of our nicer clubs have become!
