Default Care for Damaged Hair/ Glossing

My hair was so damaged it was breaking off when I brushed it. I got it cut and highlighted and now need to treat it well. I use conditioner shampoo plus deep conditioners....any other suggestions?
I worked with a dancer (with thick straight black hair) who said she had her hair "glossed." What is that?

hi madmaxine. my hair is so fried right now too. my favorite thing for my damaged hair is to use k-pak reconstructer shampoo daily and the reconstructer conditoner a couple times a week. i like the k-pak moisturizer for a daily conditioner. deep conditioners are good and have a lot of protein but you need moisture too. i even heard once that too much of the protein conditioners can cause more breakage.
also it depends on your hair type. if it is thick and coarse you can use heavier conditioners like redken's all soft. if it is finer and thinner try biolage hydrating shampoo and the detangling solution. the latter is great for fine hair b/c its light gives great conditioning, doesn't weigh it down. also if you flatiron, or heck even if you just blowdry, a heat protection spray is important for damaged hair.
as far as i know, glossed means putting a clear color on hair. it is like a color but clear! you can have it done at a salon, or they have stuff to do it at sally's. if it is one that has to be mixed with peroxide, i wouldn't recommend it if your hair is damaged. try one called lights n brights, in clear.it is in a little pink pouch and you just put it on and wait the amount of time it says. it just kinda fills in damaged spots and makes the hair shinier.
or she could have just meant she used a shiner serum, like silk therapy by biosilk or any of those products (redken glass, frizz-eeze, every line has one!) if these are too greasy for you there are cream smoothers, like tigi afterparty. the serums you can use before and after blowdrying or flatironing just play around and see how much you need.
    hope this helps!

Try Elemis Exotic Frangipani Monoi Moisture Melt - it's an oil that solidifies under 22 degrees, but you just put the bottle in some hot water and it goes back to oil - you then put it on your hair, wrap your hair in warm towel for 20 mins, shampoo and condition as normal.........you'll see the difference immediately and it smells SOOOOOOOO good too! I think the website if you want to order online is www.elemis.com or www.timetospa.com and it costs $45 for the bottle but I promise you it really does the job!
Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, dance like no-one's watching..........and never cry over something that can't cry over you

glossing fills the hair shaft which is exactly what you need. That is why your hair is breaking. When you use foils and such it takes color molecules out of your hair shaft which makes it brittle. you have to replace it with something else. Another color wold be great. I am blonde but have gold highlights in my hair and other colores too but when you look at my hair you will think that I have always had blonde hair and I have been had dark auburn hair all my life until 3 years ago. My stylist said I would never be blonde unless he stripped my hair. I wold not let him do that I just had foils put in and in 8 months of sun and beach and foils I was a platinum blonde.

Try to get away from being too platinum and put some color (depth)in your hair. It is healthier for you.

Glossing is great it adds shine I do it myself every other month. Even when your hair is unhealthy it looks shiny and healthy. Gloss fills the hair shaft but not as much as adding a bit of color.

also try usin some spray gell/hair thickener by Aquage. this stuff is great it adds thicknes to your straight hair or for curly hair you can use it as a scrunch.

If you use it right it will make your hair feel thicker and look fuller. don't over use though and be sure to use enough, lol everyone hair type is different and reacts differently i'm sure you will find what best suites you.

Filler you need a filler just remember that.

Also, one of the things I do is go between days of washing my hair (I'll do a light conditioner rinse everyday) but will stay away from shampoos mainly and just use them when my hair really needs to get clean. I also won't "wash to squeaky" clean. I just scrub my scalp and by the roots to get rid of build-up...and then rinse.

My hair was looking really, really dried out...but I wasn't having a problem with breakage. In 2 months of doing this, my hair is soft again.

Just remember, all of those conditioners are nice, but your hair will more readily absorb your body's natural oils. On the days that you do not wash your hair, take a nice natural bristle brush and section out your hair and gentle brush scalp to ends. It'll help keep your oils from building up at the roots and your hair will look better almost immediately. This coupled with the other stuff would probably work really well.

    Venus gave excellent advice.

I use a Vitamin E leave on infusion on my hair every other washing and once a month I use hot oil treatments. I never blowdry my hair either. I have thick, naturally curly hair that my hair dresser says is the healthiest she has ever seen.

Jan, you rock. I LUV aquage.com. I've used their leave-in, it's great. I just went to the salon yesterday (for color re-touch) & bought aquage healing cond. (a deep 1). Also, a great, very gentle shampoo: stevenssalon.com. level 4 shampoo for dry & chem. treated hair. Smells like french vanilla. Venus has some great advice too, as always. I have been "glossed" a couple X s @ salon, when I 1st got my hi lites, months ago, it helped.

An inexpensive shampoo that really made a huge difference in my hair is the stuff by Dove. I have always had long, thick hair, and it was getting fried from coloring, etc. Within two weeks, it was back to being shiny and bouncy again.

Also make sure you are nice to your hair - don't brush it when it's wet, when you get out of the shower, just pat it and squeeze a little with the towel, no wrapping it or twisting it into a turban on your head to dry, if you are going to blow dry/curl/iron/whatever it, make sure you use some kind of product that can help protect your hair at the same time. Take a multi vitamin or prenatal vitamins or something specifically for hair/skin/nails. Remember no matter what processes you use to baby it now, your need to make sure the new stuff growing in is healthy as well.

i forgot one thing- there is a product by roux called porosity control. it is normally used before a color as a filler but i use it occasionally as a conditioner. there is a shampoo too but i haven't used it yet. this stuff works really well! it is like a filler everytime you use it. you will notice how much easier hair is to comb and it looks healthier.
the dove line is really good too for a fix on the cheap.

Biosilk has dimethacone (spelling) which acts as a slip for your hair. If you have tired hair or hair that has breakage this is great. It obviously will not repair broken ends but it acts as a smoothing agent on your hair shaft. When your hair strands are smooth you will not see the broken ends "split ends" that are on your hair shaft It instills shine and lustre. this will make your hair very shiny and healthy looking

I love this stuff I use it every day before I dry it or use aquage. It also is great to use as a thermal treatment before you use the dryer or press.

I also use it as body oil sometimes. usually in the summer. I'm sleek and smooth all over. lol, (I laugh at my own jokes alot) It feels great on your body and love the smell, men love it too because this frangrance will not carry on their clothing at all just stays on you.

Be sure that when you buy hair or body products that the alcholol is a pb40 and 3 other ones. Have to get my book out on this. But this is the purest form of alcholol used as a mixing agent. as soon as it hits the air it evaporates and you are then applying only the ingredients on your hair not the alcholol.

Kewel, J. If you're ever in Chicago, you MUST check out Bravco store, on Oak st. They have the BEST hair products, hard to find stuff, & hi end makeup, (many store brands too).

My aunt used to put mayonaise in my hair when I was going through heavy medication that was making my hair fall in thin out quite a bit. She would dress my hair with mayo and then wrap it in a plastic bag and apply a warm towel to the top ot the bag. She would leave it like these for about three hours and then rise it out. IT WORKS!!!! my hair looked so shiny and healthy. If you're on a budget you may want to try this first, it's cheap!!!!

Glossing is for shine ONLY. THis will not protect damaged hair, so i keep hearing from my roomie who gets her hair done alot.
Also it does not last long, a few months at best.

What you need is a filler. Sally beauty supply will be able to help. You mix this stuff in a bowl and paste it on the hair. Let it sit. It fills holes, and HELPS the hair.

Damaged hair is a rough cuticle that has tiny splits, or holes as they call it. Best bet pamper, no tugging, and buy this stuff, i forgot the name, but they will know what it is.

Hair has to grow, we can help the damage but not reverse it. Hope our hair does not split all the way up the shaft in the future.

Good luck, About glossing ladies, i had not had it done, but this is what i hear. Dunno.

Very true Vixie!!!! Mayo like she says, not salad dressing. I made that mistake once. Mayo has lots of oils in it, that is why it does work!
