Default Thinking about moving to las vegas

I am thinking of moving from san diego to las vegas in the near future and was wondering if anyone has any info for me on life in las vegas? I am not necessarily going there to dance, i just graduated with an accounting degree and will most likely look for a job doing accounting at a hotel. I am just so sick of san diego because it is so expensive to live here (900.00 for a one bedroom versus about 500.00 for a one bedroom in vegas)... i am kinda scared because i have never lived anywhere else before, so its kinda intimidating. can anyone tell me what the good neighborhoods are to live in? anything helpful on life in vegas versus san diego? thanks!!

I wouldnt move here for an accounting job, I have an accounting degree and so does my husband.. and there are no good accounting jobs in Vegas, they dont pay anything at all you are better off in Cali or New York, unless you come here to dance.

Really? I am so bummed to hear that. I would have thought there would be good accounting jobs because of all the money that flows through the city

Vegas is a really small town compared to NYC or LA,so that maybe why those two cities fare better for accounting.

I live in Las Vegas, so maybe I can help a bit.

First off, your expectations for a $500 one bedroom apartment are a bit off. You can find a one room for that cheap, but only if you like living in a shitty area in Crackhead Central of Vegas. A more realistic expectation for a one bedroom in a safer area would be a low $700 per month. But hey, that's still cheaper than San Diego!

Second of all, any job in a hotel or casino is hard to get. Why? We have about 6,000 people a month moving to Vegas, most of them pursueing a fantasy casino job. So ANY job in a casino has stiff competition, even to clean toilets. Any job that isn't even the service industry has even more competition just because alot of people in Vegas don't want a service industry job. So jobs in offices are scarce.

Also, wages in Vegas are lower than in San Diego. Most of the jobs here you are expected to make tips, hence the low wages.

Dancing out here sucks because the income for that is low too.

Good areas to live in are the West side of Vegas: SW, NW, Summerlin, Southern HIghlands, Centennial Hills, Aliante.
NW vegas is ok but stay way from North las vegas, central las vegas, or anywhere about a mile around the Strip.
Henderson and Boulder City, the two closest cities to vegas, are nice, especially Lake Mead and Green Valley Areas.
Last, stay away from the airport, the military base, or anywhere near Nellis, unless you like noisy planes, high crime, and blighted neighborhoods. In other words, most of the east side of Vegas.

I love Las Vegas and I've lived out here for years. However, most of the people that move here don't realize that it has gotten more expensive to live out here, especially with our home prices doubling in the past 2 years. A very small starter home in a shitty neighborhood now starts at about 200K, which is way out of line with the wages that most of the locals make. Sad, but thats what happens when the city you live in suddenly becomes the fastest growing city in the nation.

So good luck with Vegas, and do your homework! Just don't make the mistake that alot of people have made coming to this town by moving here before you get a job or without any savings. If your not looking to buy a home right away you will probably do ok, as alot of the newer apartment complexes out here will rent out very nice one bedrooms in the $700 range.

All of the above is 100% true. If you just graduated frm college with an accounting degree and did well you have much better options, first you should go to career planning and placement because most AACSB accredited colleges and universities have the top firms come and visit the school. Accounting is a rigid field, the best firms hire bachelor degree candidates from the schools directly for entry level and its hard to get an accounting job on your own in a city without experience. You need at least 2 years experience to land what most would consider a good position in a general office setting. Otherwise even with a bachelors and good grades you will get up getting a casino accounting clerk job that wont pay you enough to live well in Vegas. Also as was mentioned above even toilet cleaning jobs are hard to get here. I moved to Vegas from New York, for similar reasons.. lower cost of living.... cheaper real estate options. Thought both my husband and I would land great jobs because Vegas is less educated than New York where your average 25 year old has a masters and the career drive of an olympian. However even though I have an accounting degree with honors and experience I am dancing right now. Also just add a little more to the reality of Vegas. My husband speaks multiple languages, .. has a degree in economics from France, and a duel degree in Finance and Accounting from a top east coast school, the only job he has been able to get so far here has been jobs as a waiter. Now because he has a huge gap in his resume he has to go and get a masters before he can land a great job in accounting again. At least as a waiter you can pull in decent money for day to day but it is detremental to somone on a business career track. Plus he recently left his job and now I am supporting us both by dancing in a slow time of year. It is a nightmare. My advice, you got through school and spent a lot on your education, stay in Cali and network or move to a city with a good financial base (New York) etc Chicago.. Dont move here for an accounting job, and you will thank yourself later.

Finally, someone who agrees with me about living in Vegas! I'm so tired of seeing people being totally being misled about what life in Vegas is like...alot of these people are getting crap information from websites supported by the real estate industry (who are there just to sell houses). Sure, the weather is nice, there is alot of jobs being generated here, and real estate is "inexpensive." New homes are being built everyday, and there is a housing boom!

The truth of the matter is that the weather is nice most of the year (except for a few crummy months over the summer), the majority of the jobs being generated are entry level service industry retail jobs with little chance of promotion, and the real estate is inexpensive only compared to the most expensive places on the planet, like California and New York. And sure there are plenty of houses being built, but in reality there is a housing shortage here...a shortage of affordable housing. If you want to pay more than 300K for a home however, there are literally thousands of new homes to choose from...good luck trying to find anything under 250K.

In this town I've seen alot of dancers working two jobs-a regular job plus their dancing job to cover expenses because their regular job was usually too low pay, or their full time dancing job income was too unstable to support them throughout the year.

Vegas does have one perk...if you are business owner, the taxes are low. Since my husband moved here from California he saves an average of 40% yearly on his taxes versus what he paid in California...and his services are much more in demand because the city is growing! This is a great town to be a business owner in.

I'll take issue with that (a month later), being a CPA in Las Vegas. If you're looking for hotel jobs, you'll find them and they will pay decent. If you're looking to get into public accounting you'll get paid well because there is a real shortage of qualified public accountants here. Hell, send me a resume. We could use some good staff accountants!

As for the heat, I always say the first summer is the worst, because most people seem to think they know what 115 feels like and really don't. After that, you get into the "its hot...yes, I know...so what?" mode and learn to enjoy the heat. While I love it when its in the 60s - 80s here, there's something nice about being baked in 95-105 degree heat (after that, its just brutal).
