Wow, Now it's at 11,000.

This is definately one of the biggest disasters i've ever heard of. Truely heart breaking.

I'm sincerely hoping the news reports are wrong, and it's not as bad as they are saying, but I'm afraid it's going to have a devastating impact on tourism and fishing, which many of these countries (Thailand & Sri Lanka in particular) depend upon for their survival.

I suspect the death toll will end up much higher. According to the CNN article, there's 2,000 fishermen off India alone who were in the path of the tsunami and haven't been accounted for. You know that the coastal areas will be a huge mess, and recovery will take a long time.
Just horrible.
Very sad

Adina, thanks for that link.....i'm certainly gonna donate something.
^ In the US and Japan, these systems exist because the nations can afford to build them, as they're not cheap and constantly under redevelopment.
Affected Asian nations have no ability to do this, not to mention the distance involved from epicenter to point of wave impact was comparatively short.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

Very very sad.
I was watching the news this morning that had footage shot from a man (I think a tourist) with a videocamera. Words can't describe the sympathy I have for these people.
May the Angels guide them safely home, and comfort their relatives who are left without them.

Over 22,000 dead now and climbing, almost exponentially.
Those videos of those waves smashing into the beaches (kind of like a hurricane storm surge on steroids) just send chills down your spine.
As far as any early warning systems, even if the affected countries had these in place, I'm certain there still would have been massive loss of life considering the time of day the waves hit (early on a Sunday morning when a lot of folks were still asleep) and how fast tsunamis move. Sri Lanka and India were 1,000 miles from the epicenter and they probably had two hours at the most.
Former SCJ now in rehab.

Wow. Up to 23,000 now and over 1 million displaced.
I can't even imagine...![]()

We're hearing all sorts of bad news about it here. (Seattle has a HUGE Asian population). I'm also hearing that we're not getting the full story, since a lot of news isn't coming out of some areas, either remote areas or areas like Sri Lanka where the Tamil tribes control a big chunk of the country. Sri Lanka alone could have as many as a million people affected.
Wow.... all I can say is wow.... this is so tragic and terrible.

My kid's are totally frightened by this..My oldest was like "Mom, this is like the movie. The Day after tomorrow when the water washed New York City away." I said it's similar and yes it does happen. She didn't know something like that could happen in real life.![]()

So far 44,000 ppl dead! US is sending $150 Million dollars.

In the midst of this terrible tragedy, when tens of thousands of people have been killed and perhaps millions homeless, the fact that THIS is a news story (I got it linked from CNN.com) should give you ample indication about where everyone in the friggin world places their priorities!

I don't know...it's sport illustrated. What else can they say about it?
52,000 and rising.

I saw an interview with Colin Powell on the Today show this morning while I was at the gym. He pretty much indicated that the U.S. would be sending a LOT of aid.... they bantered around numbers like a billion dollars from the U.S. government alone. HOWEVER, it's clear that it's going to take much more money than that to get these people back on their feet, and private aid is critical, too.Originally Posted by LoveSexMoney

This is the greatest natural disaster since the 1960's, when a big earthquake killed over 300,000 in China. 60,000 dead and it could double after the disease and famine. half of the victims are children. The earthquake was so powerful, it caused the earth to wobble on its axis and may have shifted the position of the continents.

Yep,it's a sign that's it's the beginning of the end.

After reading the last updates, what just popped into my head was the ending for "The Abyss" (the 1992 version)....But truly, it breaks my heart that most of the victims were impoverished indigenous peoples who were smashed out of existence in a brutal, sudden way. This world is not fair.
I'm glad I'm not a tree-hugging environmentalist anymore. Mother Nature is a bitch.

The toll is officially 68,000 right now, and expected to climb much higher.
The scope of this disaster is incomprehensible and numbing.
I have already met two jackasses who say this is a good thing, because we are an overpopulated planet anyway. If I wasn't at work and would have lost my job, I would have decked them both.
