Do you find it offensive to be referred to as a stripper?

Do you find it offensive to be referred to as a stripper as opposed to a dancer??? I had never really thought about until I was listening to the radio this evening and NIN "Closer" came on. After the song was over the DJ mentions how it is the stripper anthem. Then he goes on to say say how strippers hate to be called strippers and want to be called dancers; he went on to make some stupid joke about the whole thing but it got me to thinking do dancers really take offense to being called a stripper or was this just a lame attempt by the DJ to be funny?

P.S. Sorry if this question has already been asked but I searched for dancer & stripper I came up with 500 results and was to lazy to go thru them all to see.

I find it gets more offensive as I've been dancing longer. Maybe it is just the tone people tend to use with it, like a slight condescension:
Me: I work at -insert club name here-.
    person: "oh, you're a stripper?"

I'm generally not offended by it, and I'll admit having used it for shock value before (as in, "oh, did I mention I'm a stripper").

Nope, I am not offended by it. Although I think most strippers would rather be called 'exotic dancers'...

    Naw, I'm not offended.

At the club I work, the management and DJ refer to us only as "entertainers" and I'm amused by that... After all, not everyone of us goes on stage so it seems to fit better, and I wouldn't say that everyone is "dancing" in the VIP room either. Yup, "entertainer" works, lol.

I am not at all offended by it. In German you don't say "Tänzerin" as in "dancer", the term exotic dancer does not really exist so the only term which describes stripping is actually stripper - not too much PC language here

I think nowadays, I refer to myself more as a stripper than exotic/lap/pole dancer. I'm open to more and the same people about what I do. When I refer to myself as a stripper, I find less questions follow because people generally know what strippers do. If you say your a exotic/lap/pole dancer, they always ask ''what does that entail?''

I prefur the term stripper - that's what I do and I'm not ashamed or embarressed about it. It pisses me off that people have a problem with the word - strippers, non-strippers anyone! There just shouldn't be a problem.
Exotic dancer is abit bogus - most strippers arn't exotic and many can't really dance either to be blatently honest.

I've never been and I've never worked with a girl who opposed to being called a stripper. Although for awhile I did start to use the term "professional stripper." It just sounded more business like (what I was about) and less "dumb drunk girl who loves to take off her clothes at any given opportunityish".

Honestly i really like the word dancer better, especially when i was getting hit alot with "oh i hear you dance, what kind of dancer?" Then i would say "the kind that takes off her clothes." Then they say "Oh Gosh a stripper?"

Damn they made it seem soooo fuckin taboo. Guess i use the term dancer alot on here for that reason.

Actually if i just came out and said i strip that would be much easier.

Am i offended? At times by the word stripper, i got used to people (prudes) using the word in a harsh manner towards me.

If i got "cool she's a stipper!" That would sound nice. But i got/get "She's a stripper, slut." Can't tell you how many times i got that shit. At my other job...BUT OF COURSE....LOl. Jerks.

I do prefer to be called.. "dancer"......

Or as some customers call me, "artistic performer" or "pole queen"... LOL

IMO that radio DJ was just a typical jerkoff media moron trying to be cool. A shock jock wannabe probably. Too bad so many of them wannabe that now, it's kinda losing it's "shock" value

I couldn't care less if anyone calls me a stripper, dancer, exotic dancer, whatever. They're all just words. Actually if some customer makes a point of calling me a dancer I'll make a point of correcting him and letting him know I'm a stripper. Outside the club it's the same. In friendly company I will refer to myself as a stripper if anything. In polite company where such talk is not acceptable, I just leave it out entirely, however I'm sure they'd all prefer to call me names much worse than stripper if they knew that's what I do

Anyway why would anyone care at all whether they were called stripper or dancer? Heh, I reckon dancer is less correct - I'd hardly call what we do 'dancing', even for the strictest airdancers We take some or all of our clothes off for money, so by definition we're strippers.

I used to hate the word stripper..BUT only because people say the word like it's the "n" word. It's easier for them to say "Dirty, little, stripper whore!"..It just wouldn't have the same effect if they said "Dirty, little, exotic dancer whore!" ..lol...

I think people try to use it as a slang word or in a negative way to get a rise out of others. Is it not the politically correct term?...hense the maybe title "exotic dancer" kind of like the secretary of yesterday..is called an administrative assistant today and if you do say "secretary" it is somehow insulting..wtf?. It's the same thing just a few more colorful words.

I however don't give a hammered shit anymore! ..stripper, exotic dancer, entertainer...cause when the average joe/jane on the street finds out..A whole new bunch of terms come out that we have to deflect.....like prostitutes, drug addicts, sluts, homewreckers, etc..

What about "prostitute" but instead being called a "hooker"..more colorful? I wonder if there is the same ? about how they are termed. (I don't have anything against women who work as this..more power to em. I just think strippers get grouped in even though that's not what our sale is about.) Don't mean to offend anyone.

How come all the harsh words have "er" at the end?..fucker, sucker, hooker, stripper, [email protected]@er, Isn't our society HAPPY!! lol

like everyone else, i guess i really dont care what people call me as long as they are respectful. when i first started dancing and i refered to myself as a stripper the manager at my club told me that STRIPPERS dance like they want to fuck and DANCERS dance like they want to make love. so he only refered to us in the most polite terms, as dancers or entertainers. and our other manager called us "showgirls" (haha) because he worked mostly at deja vu clubs before he moved to ours.

Bridge, I think there is something PC now about the term "dancers" in the larger culture. In the 2003 film, "Confidence," Jake Vig, a master grifter, is chewing out one of his crew, Miles, for attracting too much attention by spending huge amounts of cash on "strippers." Miles protests and corrects him: "they prefer to be called exotic dancers."

The film also has a scene with Dustin Hoffman as a sexually ambiguous mob boss auditioning dancers. If you get the DVD, check out the outtakes of this scene.

BTW, "Clocks" by Coldplay was first featured in the closing credits of this film over a year ago. Just blew me away when I heard it the first time. I wondered if anybody else was going to even notice it. I guess the Grammy committee did.

That was a GREAT movie, Confidence. I just love that Rachel Weisz, she is sexy, sexy, sexy!

I like being called a stripper, dancer, exotic dancer, entertainer, topless companion, ANd even SMART drunk girl who loves to take off her clothes at any given opportunity!

If someone is attempting to be condescending by calling me a stripper, I find that I tend to ward off the offensiveness by embracing it. Sometimes I ask people who are trying to be offensive to repeat themselves. It usually works very well! They seem to lose the aggressive attitude once they are asked to say it again. Like in this case, "Excuse me? I didn't hear you"
I am not offended by the word stripper. I strip, therefore I am a stripper. But I am not my job. I am not a stereotype of the word stripper. So either way I am fine. Dancer, exotic dancer, performer, entertainer, pole dancer...who cares! As long as you can define who you are and what your job is, what people refer to you as will never matter.
