How true do you think this quote is?

I think that quote describes the American mentality quite well. Most people in this country are comfortably ignorant, fat and dumb.

It is absolutely accurate in every community on our planet.

    EDIT:
This is where that whole "Ignorance is Bliss" statement comes from.

At first reading it seems to me to be more true than false, but it has distinct components and it's hard for me to consider them together. So here what I think of them on their own merit:

"Nobody likes to hear they are being betrayed"
I tend to agree with this as a general perspective of a collective belief. After all, who wants to admit their trust has been misplaced and they are being undermined by some devious human motive. So this statement implies a norm. It sets a standard for what is resonable and what is not. Thus the individual who enjoys hearing betrayment is not normal according to this statement. I think most people like to sit in a perspective that they know most of what's going on around them, even when they are wrong.

It's more comfortable to pretend things are reasonable, fair and democratic.
Here again, it seems to be a statement relating to one's own level of comfort and even uses that word within it's context. I think many prople tend to live within this mode of thinking, never realizing that the one who knows the inside story and is friends with the decision maker will more than likely prevail. I think to a certain degree, fairness is negotiated. For instance, you meet with a professor many times to understand their perspective. What would otherwise be considered a professors fairness, if not understood, falls prey to one's own belief and understanding of requirements. It does not mean necessarily that it matches anothers (profs.) perspective. So, that person who meets with the professor, may possess an unfair understanding of what it is the prof. expects for a level of performance, and thus gets a fairer grade than another who does not. That indeed is fair.

Any suggestion of a conspiracy must be the ravings of madmen."
I think this is the most misleading of all of the statements. It suggests cohesive adherance to common conception. Today, more than ever, this statement is challanged by each person who probes thought for a truer, deeper understanding. Thus the suggestion that the executives of a widely held company would do anything outside of what is considered fair and just, is the very basis that begins to shatter the "suggestion of conspiracy" as ravings and instead, opposes it and seeks truth. If this statement were in fact true, then most reporters and investigators would all be considered "madmen". I believe a statement like this could be the underpinnings of a country that is fixed in it's beliefs and blind to it's opposition. after all.... inquiring minds want to know.

Granted I can't speak for everyone but if I'm being betrayed I want someone to tell me, so I can either brace for war or prepare myself for the end.
