    Search Virus!

I was just reading in Forbes today about viruses new turn in our everyday websurfing. It was about how websites that are infected with a virus. When we visit the page a virus can inffect our computer and as we make purchases online the virus detects them and sends your information to the person who launched it into their hands. The article was about much much more but trying to keep these off your computer is another thing. Maybe someone than just me has read the article?
This was a way to have a new criminal internet militia. By just visiting already infected websites and buying things online you can infect your computer and have your identity stolen. Scary thought....How do you protect yourself as well as your computer? Whats next for new age criminals? Maybe better software to counteract these new undetected viruses going in trojan horse style passed over by virus scanning software.

Is there a really good anti-virus software btw?

Maybe, the warning is slightly over inflated but I thought it was interesting.

Sweety, buy the McAfee Anti-Virus Suite. You can get a $20 rebate. It was stock with my computer and you have to renew each year. I checked out the "free" programs on , but you have to pay for those by registering after you run them...you get what you pay for.
Yeah, viruses will just get worse.....

The best free AV software I've used in my years is from Avast.

It's free, has true autoupdating, and is 98% effective. And it's free.

Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

I agree, I use Avast after going thru Paid Mcafee and Nortons both. Autoupdate makes it worth it I dont have to worry about anything.

Another very good one to use is Housecall by Trend Micro. It's caught lots that Norton has missed ( I never liked Macaffee, it's a f'ing pain in the ass if you ask me)

I second what Sirona said. I think pretty much all of the AV programs suck ass and won't catch everything out there. If you scan online through Trend Micro (use the link Sirona provided in her post), it will catch every single thing right up to the moment before you started the scanning. It also removes it all for you when it's done scanning.

I tried Avast earlier. The thing I don't like about it.. It is not free. Sure, it's free to scan, but if you want it to remove any of the viruses it found, you have to upgrade (of course, for a price). Of course, you have the option of just deleting the files it lists manually, but that's too much of a hassle for me. Most of them are in your registry which is a bitch to edit.

The choice is yours though. But, I highly recommend scanning online through Housecall. I scan weekly.

Avast is 100% free Rhi, but you do have to register (again, for free)

    It's available at http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
    You can register at http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

I moved to Avast from Norton Anti-virus/Internet Security and I use to be a McAfee user. I LOVE avast! It scan's email, auto updates easily (all of my family could never update any other anti-virus), is effective, it's small, it's efficient, and it's FREE! As mentioned by Rhi, one will never catch 'em all...hell, several never will. As added protection, I like to run a free housecall every now and again - http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

TrendMicro is awesome, but their enterprise stuff is much better than consumer grade stuff.

    Still, it's better than Norton.

I would first start by dumping Internet Exploder and downloading Mozilla or FireFox. Half your problem is Internet Explorer usually.

Never activate Active Desktop unless you are doing a Software Update. Stupidest thing MS ever did.

Get a firewall - one that warns about outgoing connections as well as in coming. If you see a connection to some system your not familiar with - tell the fire wall to block the connection. I had something like that - don't remember the name - but a little pop-up would show up saying "Is it OK for program x to contact y?" If I didn't recognize x, I would find the little bastard and delete it.

(Once I got Mozilla for Windows, I never saw one of these messages again.)

Add to that the disappearing disk space (I would delete stuff and still never have any disk space after a bit of time.) I am HOPING it was the OS marking off disk sectors as unusable (laptop saw some hard travel.)

If worse comes to worse - buy an Apple. That is what I did. I just got tired of the BS. Seems like in every nook and cranny of Win-doze there is a way for a little roach to sneak in.

Thanks for clearing that up, Pryce. I went and re-checked what I had downloaded, and found that it was NOT Avast. LOL. It's something called "NoAdware" or something like that, which is weird, because the link I followed was supposedly for Avast when I searched. Oy. Anyhoo, I'm downloading Avast now. Thanks again
