Default Hairdresser Dilema: What would you do? (long rant)

    Hi everyone,

I'm having a major hairdresser crysis and I need some advice...

Background: I've been seing the same hairdresser since I was 13, 9 years ago! I have had GreatLengths extensions 3 times in the last year. I go to the salon each Monday to have my hair straightened, and once each 4 weeks to touch up my platnum blonde color. So basically I spend a LOT of $$ there.

Last time when I was having my extensions done, I noticed that the glue was much whiter than ever before. I was scared that it would glow in the club under the black lights, so I asked my hairdresser if it would glow, if it was different than last time. (They didin't know I am a dancer). I asked twice and I said it was very very important that the glue did not glow in the dark, and he reassured me that it would definetly not glow.

Well I go to work in September the day after I had the extensions done, and sure enough, girls are running up to me like 'Oh my god whats wrong with your hair, the glue is glowing girl!'. Even my boss was like 'Baby, what the fuck is in your hair?? You need to fix it honney'.

So I tell the salon the next day, and my hairdresser is all like 'I can't believe this, I'll call the company and order some hair that does not glow and we'll fix it at no charge, of course".

Then September passes, and the salon says the hair is on back order. October. No Hair. November. No hair. (By this time I'm hearning at least 4x a night about how I have 'rice' in my hair from customers). December. No hair.

Until last week, when I was told that they had finally recieved the hair, but the only free part would be the replacment of the half of the extensions with the glowing problem. Which means that I have to pay $500 for the 2 bundles of brown hair that got mixed in as low-lights and did not glow. Plus they charged me $90 to take out the glowing extensions.

I'm more loyal to my hairdresser than any boyfriend or brand of tampon - I never cheated on him in 9 years. But I feel like I got totally ripped off this year, and I think I'm going to switch.

I can either go back to where I got ripped and pay about $500 to have it done (basically half free)- but I hate it there now and i feel bitter, or I can go to a new salon and pay $1000 for the whole head.

    Whaddya think?

Well I would probably go and have then fix it for $500.00 than don't go back afterwards anymore.

I'm confused.... can you explain the $500 part? Is it $500 that you would have had to pay had it been done correctly the first time? If the new $500 cost is a result of the initial fuck-up, then you need to calmly point this out to them. It's pretty simple - you explained yourself initially making your requirements very clear. Someone made a mistake...regardless of the quality of the glue, the company that put the glue in is entirely responsible for their work. If their work resulted in a circumstance that will now cost you additional monies, then they are responsible for it.

And (again CALMLY) point out to them that you have been a loyal customer and that you WANT to be able to continue using their services, but that you cannot in good conscience continue to use them nor refer them to your friends if they cannot demonstrate integrity and their desire to maintain you as a customer.

Then go to small claims....this is a keeper!

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a tough one... I would ask other dancers who they use, that's not being disloyal, but atleast you couldlook around.
The thing about hair is that as dancers it makes up atleast half of who we are because we use it in some many ways to make money, someone that costs you money by messing up your hair is a liability that you can't afford.
I would say get your hair done for the 500, guaranteeing that it is done right this time. See how you feel about being in there, even if you think it might be your last. This way you get this discount and time in between hair sets to decide if you don't want to be with that stylist anymore.
You might change your mind, but atleast you won't be paying the whole thousand to do so.

I think you should have the whole thing done for free. You would have had it all done for free had the hair not been back-ordered...had the salon been on top of what they were doing. The very fact that what they did was negligent and it interefered with your work for 3 months...just in aggravation and time, I would be bitching about my free replacement. If they would have had to replace ALL of the hair back in September when they originally fucked it up, then they should not be charging you a dime for it now. It's not your fault that they messed up and then the hair/glue was back-ordered. I would also not pay a dime for them to take anything out of my hair.

I would just calmly walk in there and say, "Here are the terms....NO CHARGE for any of the services to correct/redo what should have been done correctly the first time. NO CHARGE for taking the hair out...and NO CHARGE to replace what would have needed to be replaced last time. If you are not willing to do that...for someone who has been a loyal customer for the past 9 years...for someone who spends THOUSANDS of dollars here every year...then I am not willing to come back here. End of discussion." Sometimes you need to remind them that loyalty pays. They can either suck up the cost now and make it up with you being happy and returning...or they can make money NOW (charging you to correct their mistake) and then take an even bigger loss with losing your business and referrals.

Stand your ground. Me, personally, I would be more willing to pay more money at another salon to correct the mistake and redo the hair, than I would be to give the place who's not lived up to their word any more of my money. But, that's just me.

Good luck...let us know what happens!!

Well, Venus, that is great advice! I'm not gutsy enough to stand my ground like that, I get my Bf to do all that work, but it's also hard to be so tough with someone you've trusted all those years, even if they did screw up. When my last stylist screwed up she noticed it as I did so I didn't have to face all of this (then again she knew I was a dancer).... If only the stylist had been more attentive instead of trying out new products.
So Sorry, 242_fair... Hope you come to a decision you are happy with!

Personally, I think they should not have charged you the $90 to take out the parts that glowed when you had asked them to make sure it did not glow. It was their fault. They should not have charged you a dime, especially when you have been there for years!!! You certainly did get ripped off and they took a stab at you. I would change to a different salon. (period)

I totally agree with Venus but like gypsy said i'm not that gutsy enough to stand my ground. I take the easy way out. But no matter what you do you should at least complain and be heard. Good Luck!!!

Please please let us know what you do.... Stylists that mess up make me VERY nervous.. I once had hair past my waist and a stylist cut it to my shoulders and said there's your three inches (she meant 3 feet) I was mortified and well, I am still growing it back.
I received an xmas gift of a day at the salon all expenses paid, highlights, cut, styling, dies, you name it, but I have never been there before.
It's a great gift, but should I take the chance and stray from my norm or give away the gift to someone more brave..
If someone messes up I just pay them and run away (I even leave a tip which is kind of sad, I know) I once had my blond hair dyed tan, well it looked tan not brown, it was quite sad and I cried a few hours over it.
I appreciate people that do their job, everyone makes mistakes I guess, I just never return to those who make the mistake with me.

Today I went to a new salon thar was recommended to me by another dancer. I decided that the old stylist can keep the hair that the company sent him... I don't want to spend another dime in his salon.

And the place I am having it done only charges $800, not $1000!!!! So I'm gonna save $ in the long run. Anyway I'm going to post some pictures for everyone to see the difference with extensions and without. I've never danced without...

I completely understand how you feel. I've had hair horrors as well. However, if someone messes your hair up and you pay, tip and never say a word...you are not giving them the chance to correct the mistake. A good stylist is not someone who never makes mistakes...while that is a plus, a good stylist (and salon) is one that is willing to go to any lengths to correct/fix/undo the mistake...without additional costs to the customer.

I have NEVER allowed anyone to make a mistake and go about their day. I have always demanded it to be fixed TO MY SATISFACTION right there. I'm the person in the salon who is nit-picking every cut, strand of hair placement, etc. I work hard for my money...I expect that when I have my hair done, it will be done to MY satisfaction...and not to anyone elses. If you do not stand up for yourself that way...well, then you will always get the short end of the stick. That's not to say be a bitch about it...but stand firm and tell them that what they did is not acceptable. It is also important to find a stylist who UNDERSTANDS hair. There are a lot of stylists out there who can cut hair...but, you need to find one who can tell you what will work and what will not...etc.

242...I would still tell that other salon that they lost your business...PERMANENTLY...for their inability to provide proper, satisfactory, and immediate customer service/problem solving. Let them know that you will never be back and the reasons why. Put it in writing and mail it to them.

WOW! You must have money to throw away!500 dollars of hair that is owed to you is foolish to walk away from,I can't even see why you would even feel like that,odd...I would'nt walk away from 2 bundles of hair that was offered to me.I would go and get the 2 bundles since you paid for it and have your new hairdresser put it in,that's the smart thing to be doing, why would you just walk away?

I agree w/Venus! &, if you wanted, you could complain to Better Business Bureau, bbb.org. They may be able to get you a partial/full refund.
