WWW Spain's Gov't Approves Gay Marriage Bill

Spain's Socialist government on Friday approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriages, putting this predominantly Roman Catholic country on course to become only the third country to recognize gay marriages.

The bill was approved at a Cabinet meeting and is expected to be presented toParliamentin February for debate.
"The right to marry is a right foreveryone, without distinction. It cannot be understood as a privilege," Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega told a press conference after the Cabinet meeting. "The recognition of homosexuals' rights eradicates an unjustified discrimination."

Under the bill homosexuals will be allowed to adopt children and couples of the same sex will be able to inherit from one another as well as receive retirement benefits from their working spouses in the same way in which heterosexual married couples do now.

Another evidence of damn commie pinkos ruining our planet!

Just kidding...does Spain keep records on the relation between AIDS deaths and homosexuality?

This is a good sign, IMO.

I agree it is a very good sign, particularly since Spain is a largely Catholic country .
Good job Spain ! Now if only our country could just get on the ball and do what is right and make gay marriage legal too.

Spain does not have a national HIV reporting system in place like the CDC and NIH in the US or UK.

    You left the "winky" out!
LL, though Spain is officially a Catholic country, in the cities it's rather secular. The Spanish are quite socially progressive, especially since getting rid of Franco in the late 70's.

Thought it was a serious inquiry, regardless of the apparent disdain some have for empirical epidemiological data compilation in the cataloging of infection, transmission and treatment of disease.

So I'll winky now, mostly because of the new gratuitous bikini shot (though I love the old one too).

Good to see you posting again, ND.

I dont see anything of the sort in this topic. In most of the world more straight people get hiv than gay so I think it absurd for anybody to say or think gay people shouldnt be able to get married because they might get hiv. Anyone can get hiv if they are engaging in risky behavior like unsafe sex or iv drugs.

People who think its just gays or that gays dont have the right to marry have major mental issues in my book. And no I dont expect everyone to see things my way.

I just know that on this subject anyway they are wrong and I happen to be right

That's because there's been a response deleted from the thread.

An assertion was made that there is no value in the determination of the origination, distribution or prevalence of any given disease (in this case, AIDS) as it pertains to affected demographic populations.

The CDC and NIH would differ.

First off isn't this topic about Spain ?

Second, The world hiv demographics prove that there are more cases of heterosexual persons with and being infected with HIV than homosexuals.

Therefore is no logical reason to deny gay people rights based on hiv.

There are some unreasonable ideas on why its correct to deny them rights, it's called discrimination.

Where is it written that a particular group of people in the US, who in fact have a statistically much higher risk of dying early and racking up monstrous medical bills in the process compared to the general US population, have a RIGHT to health and life insurance at the same monthly premiums charged to the general US population - or for that matter at lower monthly premiums than US residents who smoke ?

It's very important to narrowly define which 'rights' we're arguing about.

In regard to worldwide AIDS statistics vs US AIDS statistics, the former are totally irrelevant in discussions about US gay marriage, or the REAL issue of corporate and government employers of US gays being obligated to provide 'equal' life and health insurance for gay spouses. Of course in countries with socialist governments and policies like present day Spain, the government is providing these benefits in any case, funded by increased taxes on all residents. Thus the question of legalizing gay marriage in Spain carries with it a much narrower set of issues than the question of legalizing gay marriage in the US.
