Like I've said before...If the prez is so confident that Iraq is a "more safe and peaceful" place now that we've gone in there...he should take some of his next 500 vacation days there. Traipze around the old Saddam Palace...maybe go out for dinner...with his wife...with no SS agents. But, of course, he'll never do that...
There were shootings at polling places in El Salvador and Guatemala in the late 80s and early 90s. Yet people still voted en masse. Same for Nicaragua and Venezuela just recently. Yet people still voted because it mattered enough.
We'll see how badly Iraqis want self-rule.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

That is very poiniant today. Considering that with every last western forced government in the middle east, it resulted in; violence, civil war, revolution and the goverment being replaced with either a fundamentalist regime or a military dictatorship. Funny how the fundamentalists and clerics are leading the election polls.
Everything that Bush and neocon squawking heads were warned about before the war, is happening now.
I'll just sit back and watch the GOP commit suicide for their long term political future, and pray that they don't destroy the rest of us in the process.

It just gets worse...

Actually, I'm anxious to see how much differently the Palestinian election turns out, being devoid of the blatant evil of US, UK and other 'infidel' military personnel which are responsible for all of the evils in Iraq ...

Hahaha, I love your posts, Melonie...
I am checking that link out now, thanks!

Really? Virtually every single Nation-State in the Middle-East is the result of the Western World carving the region up in the 1920's and 30's to allocate the oil concessions amongst BP and the American majors (i.e., the "Red-Line Agreement", the Tapline Agreement, etc.). Much like the Balkans, we went in and drew artificial lines on the map, paying little attention to ethnic/tribal/cultural/religious differences amongst the people we were alternatively lumping together or dividing as we set about ensuring the governments in place and/or being propped up adhered the new boundaries we'd drawn and, more importantly, to the reallocated concession rights we'd decided upon amongst ourselves. And while I would hope we've since realized the error of our ways, the fact of the matter is that if you take a look at the entire region, MOST of those "western forced governments" are not only still in power but, considering what passes for legitimate government in much of the rest of the world, are doing relatively well at the job of "governing."Originally Posted by devilsadvocate667
Although we've clearly made some major mistakes along the way (the Shah in Iran, Hussein in Iraq), most of the governments we've "forced" or "propped up" are functioning relatively well - the majority of their problems stem from the Sunni/Shi'ite divide, not our meddling.

Not a good argument. Still a good cause.
