depends on the club really. personally, if it's upbeat and groovy and i can look around and see heads bobbin' and toes tappin' on anyone over the age of 30...then i am okay with it. but all the thuggish "unghniggabitchhoniggafuckWHAT" stuff is another matter entirely and belongs in your car if that's what you like. the same rule applies to heavy obnoxious screaming offensive rock, annoying techno (blow my whistle bitch, etc),slow tedious r&b with some guy whining "ooooh giiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrllllll" over and over (coughcoughrkellycough),or hideously twangy country. etc etc etc.
as i said, it depends on what the club allows. i tend to think a little bit of everything is always nice, with no big block of anything in particular unless that is what your crowd is into. try and keep everyone happy. (which isn't going to happen, but it doesn't hurt to try.)
i also think the only reason so many clubs are "banning" it is for the same reason many have banned other things, like tattoos. when do you say when? when is too much too much? i know a good...oh i'll say 70% of the time when i ask a girl what she likes it's either hiphop/r&b or heavy modern rock. neither of which are terribly popular with the big money guys around here, i don't know about everywhere else. granted, i know many customers dont care at all....but a whole bunch do. all i am saying is that too much of any style of music gets annoying. do i play hiphop/screamin new rock/obnoxious techno? sho nuff. but i also know how to flow in and out of it into something potentially less offensive, hopefully while keeping the place lively and fun. and perhaps that is the key?

I think that music is music. I love all types of music, I like everything from hard rock (Nine Inch Nails) to alternative (Gwen Stefani). I think that clubs that clubs that don't allow rap music are somewhat racist. Its not fair that some clubs will play Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson but they won't play Outkast, or Fifty Cent. Personally I feel that a lot of hard rock songs are just as hars as a lot of rap songs, and contain the same type of graphic lyrics. I worked at one club a long time ago that said they didn't play any rap music, but when I asked them if they could play Eminem, and Kid Rock for me they did so with no problem. But yet when I asked them to play Twista, and Jay-Z for me they were very adamant about not doing it. Because of this I worked at the club only one night and then I quit.
There is a lot of good rap music out there, and there is plenty of bad rap music out there, but doesn't the same go for pretty much any genre of music?

yes rap is played here in the clubs all the time! A lot of girls put a rap song into their sets because it's popular I guess. Top 40 is mostly rap...
I have had guys who get numerous dances in a row, stop when the "hard" thuggish rap comes on. Most of the same type of guy also does not like the screaming hard rock either.
Back to the question though, I personally don't care for the rap that talks about bitches, baby mommas drama, hoes, or drugs. I don't believe that those belong in a club. At my club any song with the word Nigger in it is banned. I hate that word and I am glad that it is banned.

Well, if it's American rap or hip-hop which is influenced by soul music I don't mind. I definitely cannot stand "raggaethon" (Puerto Rican rap music) because of its monotonous beat and instrumentation plus lyrics which leave plenty to desire. Most importantly, it determines which type of crowd frequents a strip club playing such music, which if raggaethon was played would be gansgtas or guys who think they can get away with monopolizing dancers's time without leaving sufficient tips or paying for dances.
I like all types of music myself so for me it depends on the song.
I don't care for songs that encourage violence. Ofcourse not all rap is like that and some of it is pretty good imo, but most upscale clubs wont play rap because it doesn't seem to be popular with their target customer base (suit and tie guys).

I really enjoyed reading your post. I love dancing to rap mainly for the beat and the way it makes me feel on stage. Especially if I am tired..I totally agree with trying to keep the "harder" rap out of club, I save that for the ride to work..LOLOriginally Posted by ChocolateKiss

Speaking of rap, Showtime is showing the Tupac documentary tonight if anyone is interested.
I hate when girls play rap at the club! especially when they do the dreaded booty bounce!

My home club allows hip-hop, not gangsta rap. Basically, popular hip-hop that is relatively fast-paced. They play "Drop it Like its Hot" but I daresay that its too slow for the club, but its a hit. We have a pretty young crowd mixed these days, especially on weekends, but everyone seems to get along fine.

we can play the top 40 sort but if the owner is in it is NOT allowed at all.
My club doesn't play ANY rap and limited R&B/Top 40, but they play a ton of heavy, angry young man rock, as well as some out right screaming metal type stuff. Bleh. I'd rather hear poppier rap that RAAAAAAARRRRR all night long. I agree with not wanting to hear "bitch and ho" rap though-I don't want to hear that coming out of a rapper OR Kid Rock's mouth. The older guys really complain about the music on some nights.

As long as we are on the topic of music, has dancers stop dancing to what is now classic rock? Ex. Bob Segar, Foriener, Bad Comapny.

The older guys don't care if hip hop is played or not. I usually don't play hip hop, but I did a couple of weeks ago as an experiment to see if people payed more attention to me. I saw older gentlemen dancing to it while at my stage, or either stretching their necks way out to get a glimpse of me. And no one complained-they never do. I have also played Pantera, and got lots of compliments from playing it. Music doesn't seem to matter at my club. I quickly went back to my other music, though. I just feel more comfy dancing to it.
Slutty, what is the "dreaded booty bounce!"?Originally Posted by slutty

I used to book dancers at a club in New Haven that would only play rap whenever the owner wasn't there. He personally couldn't stand it and felt that it would also attract "... the wrong kind of people."

Well the club that I regular to plays a mix of music from Hard Rock to Rap. I dont really care what is playing as long as the music that is playing has a nice steady beat and not some music that is ready to put me to sleep. I see a lot of older guys not complaining when Hip-Hop is playing because it seems to energize the girls and they start dancing harder.

I personally don't care that much for rap. I haven't seen anyone complain about it though. I think having a good mix of music is good because you can never appeal to anyone's taste and the same stuff over and over again gets old.

i personally dance to rock, not necesarily raaaaaaaaar heavy rock, but it seems like it's just me and 2 other girls who dance to rock, 1 country, and everyone else rap. Last week on Tuesday, I got major compliments from a lot of guys because I was the only one there not dancing to rap. (unfortunatly I was still to nice to buy dances from, almost every guy I approached said) I agree with what most of you are saying though, the gangsta rap with extremly explicit lyrics should stay in your car, however more upbeat pop-ish stuff that has a fun beat shouldn't be banned.
I kind of agree that it almost seems racist for a club to play angry white men music, and not hard rap, I kind of feel that a line should be drawn in both areas, try to stay relativly mainstream with the music. Off topic, but kind of similarily, a couple of years back (when I was 1clubs around here tried to enforce a dresscode which banned "athletic clothes" which they said consisted of brands like (forgive me if I get these wrong) Fubu, or pelle pelle, or anyother clothes like that, which mainly African Americans wear. You can bet how long that lasted, and how quickly the media was drawn to that.

rap isnt allowed at our club because we're a gown club but we play hip hop and r&b.
Carpe Diem!

The funny thing is that 75% of rap is bought by white people which is about the same as the population. Blacks are only 12% of the population (of the USA) and even if every black man, woman, and child would buy a rap c.d. it would not be enough to keep rap in the top 40.

The reason that some clubs restrict/ban hip hop music is because it tends to bring in the the type of people that cause the better spending customers to leave (and not come back). The fact that a lot of rap/hip hop is bought by white people shows, It really isn't so much a race thing, as it is an age thing. I was too young to go to clubs back in the 80's when metal was in vogue with the college aged crowd, so I wonder if clubs imposed the same policies to it back then.Originally Posted by Chani_Fremen
Needless to say, in pretty much every music genre there are a few songs that always seem to work well in a strip club. Where else can I hear Nine Inch Nails "Closer", Sean Paul's "Get Busy", and "Big & Rich's "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" within an hour of each other.
