    Default smoke inhalation

Here's my dilemma, if I work for more than about 2 or 3 days in a row, I get a super sore throat, eyes sting constantly, and other cold type symptoms. The only thing I can think of is the smoke affecting me. When I was younger I used to get cold type symptoms almost immediatly upon being in a smokey room. Any ideas on what I can do to not get so sick from working? The obvious answer would be to take breaks between days and stuff, however with the new semester starting, I can only work certain shifts because of school and they all tend tobe days back to back

Wear a mask on stage! JK
No seriously though Im sorry your getting sick from the smoke. Is there anyway you can switch clubs? Say work at your club and one club that doesnt smoke?
I never had any right away adverse effects from 2nd hand but I hated it when my clothes and hair would smell like smoke. My only advice is to take a break after every set or so when you can. Maybe some gum just to keep that feeling of inhaling out of your mouth?

I have the same problem. I think you can sort of get adapted to the smoke after a while, but that effect goes away if you take a break. Plus, there are some bars that are just too smoky for me to be able to ever stand without getting sick. My best advice is to work in the biggest, least crowded, most well-ventilated bar you can find. Any of these things will help. Sometimes busy bars can have a good enough ventilation system that it's not a problem, but on the flipside, bars that don't usually do a lot of business can have such stale air that it makes a huge difference. The best thing is to try the places out and see how they affect you. Also supplement a lot - especially vit. C - it's supposed to help to cancel out the free radicals of second hand smoke - I've heard to take 2 grams daily for this purpose. I try and stick with that, especially the days that I work. Also take a good multivitamin, maybe some echinacea.

Another thing you might try is taking an antihistamine before you go into work. I don't know if this would help, but if it's a smoke allergy, then you would think so.

Drink lots of water to keep your troat lubricated and maybe keep some cough drops around as well for when your troat is irritated.

    Hope some of this helps.

It sounds like you are allergic to smoke, which I am. I have found that otc stuff like claritin or benadryl will work, but you'd need to make sure one of the side effects ISNT drowsiness... Also, if its a specific throat thing, then grab Luden's cough drops... they smell good and not like eucalyptus... which imho is a turn off for custys. if that doesnt work, go to your doc and tell her/him that you work in a bar and are allergic to smoke. my doc prescribes me 4 things, but the combo keeps me free of all of my allergies (of which i have many, plus asthma): flonase (does wonders for smoke allergies), astelin (very strong, for cat allergies), advair (asthma) and allegra. I only have tried this once, but i eliminated things to figure out which helped what and it seems like flonase and allegra help the smoke stuff, maybe advair too. Good luck!!

During the winter time your naso pharyngeal-muclial membranes are irritated, and cracked by the dry air. cirgarette smoke irriatates the already dry and irratated membranes ever futher........random and unprovoked nose bleeds are not far behind usally.

Take breaks in fresh air and try a product called sea breeze. It is a saline solution that is sprayed up your nose to help relive irritation.

Is it from cigarette smoke or the smoke machine? I hated cigarette smoke as well, but the biggest culprit was the damn smoke machine. I hated it. I would constantly remind the DJ not to use the machine while I was on stage...
