Default Your definition of a Friend?

Just wanting to get everyone's take on the definition of a friend?

For me it is someone who you can look to for a conversation, a helping hand, someone to hang out with, etc.

I don't really consider a friend someone who I just really talk to on occassion and maybe hang out with on a blue moon. I consider that more an aquantance.

    Is that screwed up?
I've heard that a good signiture sets you apart from everyone.
    Well......is this good enough???

Ah, the recurring thread. I have plenty of acquaintances. I have very few friends. Those who are my friends are people who are honest with me (whether I like it or not) and with whom I am expected to be honest. They do not drain me emotionally on a continual basis, and they make themselves available if needed.

Heh.. I like Rose's definition best.

That pretty much sums it up for me as well.

I consider a friend to be someone that's there not just for the sunny days. Someone that is willing to help you in a time in need. Someone that you can tell a secret to and it stays secret.

Then there's other people's definition of friend that I like...

"A person with whom you dare to be yourself." Frank Crane

"A person with whom I may be sincere. Before him I may think aloud." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Those that love not mine, but me." Robert Herrick

"That part of the human race with which one can be human." George Santayana

    And my all-time favorite:

"One who walks in when the rest of the world walks out." Walter Winchell

I highly agree with you. Also a friend calls you, instead of you calling a friend ALL the time.

A friend is Gods' special way of saying....."I love you". He gives them to us when we least expect them. But usually at a time when we most need them! Sometimes, we don't know how or why we met our friend but, God had a very special reason in mind! All we know is that we are very glad He did!

I like what RoseDelight and Pumpkin Pie said. Oprah Winfrey once said something along the lines of "Everybody wants to ride in the limo with you. A friend is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down." I think that's a good way of putting it too.

    Amen.

I have heard that when you die,you can count your real true friends on one hand.

Friends are the people who I can always count on to be there no matter what happens. I can be myself and act as stupid as the situation permits in their presence and they laugh with me and not at me. I can say I have very few friends. I have tons of acquaintances though.

Ya know Sapphie....I am beginning to thing that I am getting to be in the same situation. I started this thread to see if what I thought of a friendship was not just 'something that I thought it was' but rather what the definition is to others.

I really am questioning a friendship of a person right now, that had constantly told me that we were friends, to only have her almost completely slip back into the aquantence role. Everytime that I confront her about it, she tells me that "Nothing is going wrong and I didn't do anything to piss her off" So I leave it at that....and then she continues to draw further and further back.

I guess that I am the type of person that wants to be told the truth from the get go. Don't lie to my face and paint a picture that isn't the way it is. Tell me upfront the truth...and we will get along great!

Glib, but accurate. I define a friend as somebody who would be there for me if I needed it, even if it put their ass on the line as well. Beyond even just "liking you in spite of your faults" or "being there when things are tough", a true friend is somebody who will do something detrimental to their own self-interest for you.

Ironically, you probably wouldn't ask a true friend to do anything that puts them in this position (assuming it runs both ways).

Ya know Rose...I guess that I am the type of person that would rather have someone tell me vs. just lying about the whole deal. Hell, that is how most of this got in the place we are now, because she wouldn't tell me the truth, instead kept telling me everything was ok.

Interesting thing is I finally cornered her this weekend to talk, and heard nothing. She finally emailed me at work and told me how she was changing in her life (trying to put family more, which I think is great) and she really started to feel like she wasn't getting any space (even though I only talked to her a grand total of about 10-15 minutes in a day).

So...I guess that friendship has slipped back into the 'aquantence' role by what she told me today. Kinda hurts, because she has basically shut me out, even though I was the only person who stood by her and made sure that everything was ok when her life was in the toilet. Im not saying that this should be a reason to keep friends, but to dismiss a 3 year friendship in less then 3 months...well.....sucks!

Oh well.....it's amazing....cause I am finding that my true friends are coming to my side to ask if I am ok. So, atleast I know there are some out there.

Well said Mojo... I agree. I end up feeling drained a lot and only have one true friend.

But at least I have one and we love each other like sisters!
