    Default Suicide...Religion...Spirituality...oh my!

I just love these cheery topics. Yes, this is inspired by the double suicide post and various responses.

Opinions on suicide vary a great deal on personal preferences, religious beliefs, etc. My own opinion - suicide is a very selfish act when you have people in the world who will be forever affected by it. It does sadden me when people who are young make this monumental decision. If you have loving parents, children, brothers, sisters, etc...you need to really think about it. Beyond that, I do feel it is someone's personal right. I do not feel that we owe it to the universe or God or Gods to be "alive" for them.

    So....your opinion?

I think it's ok for people who have some type of illness in which they are in extreme pain and there is little hope of them being cured to kill themselves. I think they need the consent of all their family members and to make sure that they are psychologically stable. Also it should be made sure that they are not being coerced into it by some jack a-- relative who just wants inheritance.

I think it's sad when young people who have their whole lives ahead of them kill themselves. I would hate it if my parents, my boyfriend, or children (don't have any of those yet!), or close friends of mine, would kill themselves because they are depressed.

I'm all for suicide if you have some severe medical problems. To off yourself just cuz sally broke up with yer lame ass or cuz mom and dad took away yer cell phone or various other reasons is stupid

My step sister shot herself in your front yard with her mother and son within 100 yards of her. Now let me explain. She had a sever chemical imbalance in her brain that we all had tried to help her with. We took her to hospitals, which only keep her long enough to put her on medication that they said would help her out. We brought her to our house with 24 hour a day supervision. The medication did not work for her. We took her back to the hospital, which they then told us that the medication needed time to get into her system. The next day my step-mother took her to her house to get clothes. Her husband, her mom, and her son were there while she went into the bedroom to get clothes. She found a gun that had been totally hidden from her and went out into the front yard through her bedroom. She yelled a couple of times, so my step mother and her son went out to see what was wrong and then she just shot herself through the heart. By the way my step-mother was watching her son so that the dad could take a quick shower. Her son was 2 years old.

I do believe in it when someone has a painful, incurable illness (ex. aids, cancer). I also believe that hospitals and doctors need to pay more attention to their patients. Many people go through severe depresstion, postpartim depression (Andrea Yates), andsome go through chemical imbalances without the help that they need.

i think for a healthy person to kill themselve over losing a job for example is just plain wrong and very selfish as MojoJojo said. It shows that the person doesn't care for anyone elses feelings or who he or she may hurt in the process.
However as Blade mentioned, when it comes to medical reasons it get a little complicated, and im not really sure where i stand on that.

I am not a religious person, but don't believe in suicide. We all struggle, suffer, and endure a lot of messed up shit in our lives, but there is always someone who is left behind who will undoubtedly be affected. It is , like mojo said, a very selfish thing to do. I can't say I have never contemplated it, most people have, I just think in the end it is better to wade through whatever is wrong, and try to change yourself and your life for the better. As far as health problems are concerned, I have never been terminally ill, but still believe that life should take it's course and still don't believe it is a very admiral thing to do to take your own life. I guess I say this because I have kids. I think my life isn't just mine, but everyone's who is a part of my life. For that reason, there is always hope.

I think killing yourself is great if you can do it without causing physical harm to others. People should think before they leap off a building, it would suck if they hit someone or totally fucked up someone's car. Or they jumped off an overpass and landed in someone's windshield causing them to have a fatal motor vehicle accident. Or they tried gas and then blew up the entire apartment complex or something. Suicide can be done for some pretty petty and selfish reasons, good riddance. The one thing that sucks about some suicides is when the person who does it has a family they leave behind and family is fucked financially because the Life Insurance policy becomes null and void.

I support suicide in cases of fatal illness, it's exactly what I would do before I became a lump of wasting flesh. In other cases, I would say that it is selfish and not very bright. I mean, there is always the chance that life will do a 180 and everything will be great if you just make it to tomorrow. Unlikely, but there is still a chance!

It depends why they want to kill themselves. I saw a statistic once that said something like seventy percent of people who commit suicide are trauma survivors. In those cases I know that just staying alive is helpful. There are always people to talk to and life gets better.

In the case of terminal illness, terminal circumstances, untreatable mental health conditions that cause suffering, etc., I admire and respect people's choices when they are made responsibly.

If Joe kills himself cause Sally broke up with him and mom and dad took away his cell phone, it's called natural selection. Really. I think Darwin even had something about that in The Emotions of Animals.

I am not down for killing yourself. But if you have some horrible medical condition that makes you live in pain everyday and you cant seem to live without the meds to keep the pain away then I say its up to you if you would like to take all the pain away and off yourself. But if you have a perfect life and a few down falls in it, then I say go and get some professional help. But leave in mind for those people that do decide to off themselves to leave a note so they may donate your organs to people that need them. At least someone is getting something out of it.

I firmly believe that life is about experience. If someone feels that they want to experience the effects of suicide...then who am I to tell them no? I also believe that no one dies, but that their soul goes to another level and can look back and learn from each decision, positive and negative, that was made throughout their life.

Do I want people to kill themselves? No...however, I was never one to "deny" someone their experience. People have to make their own choices without fear of angering or hurting others, because in the end...no one is responsible for how another reacts or feels to what you choose to do or not do.

I say bad because 1) there's almost always someone who will be hurt (I believe it's always wrong to knowingly do something to hurt others) and 2) even though I don't believe in any god or religion, I do believe that taking ANY life, whether your own or someone else's does something to screw up the cosmic balance, which ultimately must be counterbalanced. If that makes any sense...

What if Jeffrey Dahmer had decided he should kill himself before hurting anyone? Charles Manson? Adolf Hitler?

Heh, then there would have been only ONE killing to counterbalance, instead of many. I'm not saying it can never be justified, but I think there are always negative consequences. A preemptive suicide IMO doesn't work because if someone can consciously reason they need to kill themselves in order not to kill others, they could also logically reason themselves into simply not killing anyone. We would never know what lives might be saved if those people killed themselves first...
