    Do Clubs Pay?

    hey all!

I just have a quick question about the way you get paid. do you make all of your money off dances, or do clubs pay you hourly as well? i have read that strippers do make all their money off of tips, but i was wondering if that's the same sort of thing as saying waitresses make all their money off tips?

In US clubs at least, there are generally two systems in place. First there are clubs which treat their dancers as 'independent contractor business persons'. These clubs generally collect a nightly fee from dancers for use of the club's facilities, and allow the dancers to keep most if not all of their stage tip earnings as well as most of the money customers spend on private dances, champagne room etc. The mental analogy most useful to me for this sort of club is a 'Flea Market', where the club provides the market, where the club charges every market vendor a 'rental fee' for the privelege of selling their wares, and the club perhaps also collects a percentage of the vendor's sales revenue.

The other system are clubs which treat their dancers as 'commissioned employee salespersons' where dancers are actually employees of the club, and where all transactions take place between the customer and the club rather than the dancer. These clubs do indeed pay dancers an hourly rate (albeit a pretty low hourly rate), and almost always also pay the dancers 'commissions' based on the amount of private dances or champagne room trips they sell on behalf of the club. These clubs almost always also allow dancers to keep any stage tips they receive.

From a financial standpoint there is a significant difference between a dancer being treated as an 'independent contractor business' thus responsible for keeping her own books and filing/paying her own taxes, versus a dancer being treated as an 'employee' with the club's payroll system withholding taxes and reporting her income.

    no hourly wage...

Dancers have to pay a "house" fee (usually 20-50 bucks, sometimes more) to work in a club. In addition, dancers must tip out their DJ, doormen/security, bartender, housemom, and sometimes hostesses and managers.

Depending on how well my night is, tip outs (including house) usually totals at least 75-100 bucks for me. But it's not big deal when you're making good money

In Australia, as far as I'm aware, all dancers are self-employed independant contractors. If the patrons do not pay us, we do not get paid. Simple as that. I don't know of any actual strip clubs where they pay you. Some clubs work on a percentage for the "house" fee whereas others work on a set fee each night that is paid.

Regardless, if the patrons do not pay the dancers, the dancers do not get paid.

Yep. We have to pay set fees and "tips" to the club and other staff to work. We don't make a penny until we've earned enough from customers to cover nightly fees. There are a limited few (extremely few) clubs that pay the girls minimal wage, but I'd say 99% of us have to pay the clubs instead. Everything we make comes from customers.

I'm treated as an employee and make minimum wage w/ a four dollar increase per hour overtime; overtime is determined per day (i.e. work 8 hrs anything over will be overtime). I think it's because they got sued a few years ago by former dancers. The club has manipulated a way to illegally collect stage fees by having a quota of chips to be collected per shift. I do think this works much better than collecting on a percentage of vip shows, however, even though stage fees are really high ($300-$420/shift). Sucks, but it does give an excuse to ask for more money from a generally upscale clientelle while having a well-maintained club.
...and the day came, when the risk it took to remain closed in a bud became worse than the risk it took to blossom.
