    Default Ugh! Fucking pretentious DJs!

So I'm browsing and sharing on soulseek, come across somebody with some songs I want, so I put them in the queue. Not a huge list, but more than 4 songs. In a few minutes I get a message from this guy saying "read rules". Uh, what rules? "browse me." So I browse his files, and he's got a folder named "no more than 4 downloads at once or get banned". Well, I can only download one at a time from him, so what's the problem? He replies "no more than 4 in queue at once". I say sorry didn't see that - and he graciously decides to allow my downloads to continue, but chastises me and warns me to "next time, mind this".

Ok so now I know I have to browse everyone's files before putting more than 1 or 2 of their songs in queue to make sure I'm not violating their "rules" in order to avoid getting *gasp* banned.

I come across another guy who's got some songs I want. A whole Cd actually. I browse him and find he has his system set to disallow anyone who's not in his permitted list. So I message him asking how does one get in his list. He replies with "if you have what I like". He doesn't bother to respond whether he'll add me to his list so I can download. I assume he's browsing me and wait. No answer. I suppose that means he doesn't approve of my rather extensive library and won't share with me

WTF is up with these twats? All seem to have a different set of "rules" for sharing, yet they're on a fucking free internet file-sharing system, looking to download from others. Doesn't it kinda defeat the purpose of the whole thing if you put all these primadonna arbitrary rules on how and with whom you'll share? Bleh! What happened to the simple "share or be banned" code everyone seemed to go by before? Do these DJs (most of whom are likely just a bunch of wannabes or pimply-faced high school brats anyway) actually think their 1000 new and current files are any better than anyone else's? Puh-lease!

^ Because Kazaa Lite has suffered a loss of material and servers because of changes to the Kazaa code.

    I use eMule.

I hate these guys. One of them probably infected a video file I downloaded while I was using Morpheus in 2001. Did a pretty good job fucking up a work computer that way.

    Just another example.

Dj's rule the world and you fuckers better start to relize it.

Bow down and beg forgiveness for even taking their name in vain!

You people have it all wrong. There are rules and protocal for downloading. For instance, if an indevidual does not have enough bandwith, and you que up or download too many tracks at once (like a whole CD) then you will slow down or lock up their file sharing program.

Also, many file sharers dislike people who don't share, so if you do not trade with them, they will not waste bandwith on you.

Also, it is polite to contact a user and ask when attempting to download more than one song.

I hate it when I am downloading files and my downloads freeze because some shmuck is trying to steal 10 files from me at the same time.

I agree. Starting with Title 17, US Code. Sections 106 and 107 of the 1976 Copyright act are rules too. Laws in fact.

Wow. This reminds me of TV footage during the LA riots. Recall the images of looters in a mad rush to carry TV's out of stores. "I hate when I break open the store, and looters are impolite to me."

Unless you own the copyright to the material (I assume music recordings), you are in fact the primary violator here as the knowing distributor of stolen property.

I realize of course this is an extremely widespread practice, and preaching is not the solution. I have no idea what is. Some in the recording industry favor blanketing the country with Federal civil lawsuits against the more visible distributors. DMCA "safe harbor" provisions give them the right to obtain your personal information through your ISP by subpoena. Scary but true.

I think the majority of file sharing users understand what they are doing, just like they do when driving over the speed limit. I myself would never exceed the speed limit.

Easy with the term "steal" when referring to the distribution of stolen property.

Whose rules? Each file-sharer? Come on, don't you think it's just a tad ridiculous for EVERYone to place their own rule on the system? Please.

The program has options for controlling bandwidth both in and out, so the badwidth issue is rendered null and void. These users need simply adjust their settings so only one upload per person is allowed at one time, and limit the total number of files that can be uploaded from their system at the same time, AND adjust their download settings so the program never clogs or freezes. It's a very simple matter and I'm positive these users know this.

These guys are just being twats. Plain and simple. If it's a matter of someone trying to download 500 songs from you, that's one thing. Ban them. Also it's customary to ban anyone who tries to download without sharing. Other than that there is positively NO need for all these stupid arbitrary "rules"

    May I recommend....

Ares.Works wonders for me and my Dj hubby. We do tend to dump out our library onto our computer after awhile; we don't want to attract too much attention. I also grab a few from WinMx beacause they always have the best white label remixes that I can't seem to find anywhere else.

    Good luck.

God knows DJs can be among the most pretentious variety of fallible humans out there. I didn't know about all these technical issues involved with file-sharing, or the seemingly elaborate protocol involved with Soulseek. Thanks for the heads up on these issues, Bridgette, Scorpio, and Stant (who knows his copyright law, it seems).

I tried Soulseek once because it sounded so good, but had a little trouble with it so went back to Limewire, from which I downloaded way too much stuff to deal with at once, in a binge to satisfy my lust for new music.

Since I am now weeding out the huge number of songs I have DLed onto my girlfriend's computer, mine still being in Florida, I have temporarily stopped stealing files from anyone else who has stolen them already.

When I do go back and use Soulseek, I will know better than to just go merrily DLing a giant list of stuff, like I did every night on Limewire for a while.

Sounds to me like there might be issues that we aren't aware of in all this, but it also sounds like a couple of these guys Bridgette is dealing with need their mommies to suspend computer priviledges until they finish their homework, lol.

Hah! I thought I was the only one who got those messages. I use soulseek as well and yes, you do come across many ignoramuses who are the most selfish people on earth with free music. Completely defeats the purpose of internet sharing.

Man, so many rules. So little time. I know if I see something I want...I want it right now ( just the 3 year old in me ). Take our profession for instance, quick gratification. Easy Money ( someone should make the rule that Money should begin with a capital 'M', it's much more important than a day of the week). Easy come, easy go.ramble, ramble, ramble, rambleOh yeah, try putting a little money (just under $20 ) and upgrade to Limewire Pro, no adware, warnings of corrupt files when you happen to find one, which is rare, and FAST downloads on 75% of the stuff out there. The best purchase of 2004 for me.....not counting my doctor co-pay to make the burning go away.

I use Shareaza and out of all the music I have, the only thing that anyone ever downloads from me is my very teeny tiny collection of porn clips. Doh!

For music Kazaa Lite used to be the top dog industry standard for those 1337 indsividuals out there. Unfortunately the RIAA got wind of the Kazaa community and has now been somewhat successful at discouraging the download of the more popular tunes by placing dummy files out there thant are either blank or filled with ear killing noise.

Little do they know there's an even better medium out there that I am surprised none of you have mentioned. Dare I mention it here? It starts with a W and has been my sole source for "educational" music downloads since AudioGalaxy got shut down a few years ago. I almost never have trouble finding what I want. The key is tweaking it properly. Kazaa Lite is now only really good for porn downloads. No one watches that though right.
